Nikola Topic vs Stephon CastleWho do you got??? Topic? Or Castle?
Topic is very crafty and has proven to be a good floor general when fully healthy. The issue with him is he hasn’t been healthy all year. Early on he looked like a contender to be the #1 pick before injury. Although he’s lost a little steam, he’s taken on full time point guard duties and performed well against some good competition.
Stephon Castle on the other hand didn’t get to play point guard, the position he’s trying to project himself in the NBA. He’s a dawg defensively and helped his team win the NCAA title. He’s pretty athletic and has everything going on for him… but a jumper… something that’s needed in today’s game by most players.Give me Castle still. Imo he’ll have a Marcus Smart impact floor and a Brandon Roy ceiling if the jumper comes around… Probably will end up somewhere in the middle of those players.

sweaterflexParticipantI like Castle’s two way upside but Topic is the best pick and roll play maker in the draft and I have a lot of confidence it will be amplified further when his jumpshot comes around, he clearly has touch based on his free throw shooting and finishing around the basket. I do think Castle can create more than he showed at UConn but he’s probably tops out a secondary playmaker. Castle’s shooting looks like it will be pretty average, and I think he’ll be a good defender but hard to say he’ll equal Marcus Smart. I would have Topic as early front runner for ROTY with Reed Sheppard a close-ish second.

HitsterParticipantA lot depends on draft position and where they land. Topic could get the keys to a franchise whilst I don’t see Castle ever doing so. But Castle looks a perfect glue guy and has All Defensive team potential, he may not be a superstar but he could be Iggy/Harrison Barnes level. I think Topic maybe has the better career but I could see Castle being a fixture on a more successful team.
I’d draft Topic ahead of Castle this year.
ROY is a hard call. Whoever Washington takes at 2 should get good minutes but if one of the Kentucky Benchwarmers goes to the Spurs they could put up good PPG.

NorrinRaddParticipantThere is talk about Castle going to work outs only as a point guard and the word is the Spurs are an intriguing spot to land for both prospects… I get the logic from what you’ve seen at UConn, but he might be better – he was in a box at UConn doing what he does intangibly. Topic meanwhile got a lot of his 2s at the rim. Bigs in the NBA are more athletic, good luck with that but maybe. I also have Castle bias.

HitsterParticipantI could see the Spurs taking both and if they could pull it off it would be a coup. Who they would take where I don’t know and who would get to be the main ball carrier would be interesting. The Spurs can go so many ways with their picks that we can only second guess them. Castle would be the sort of player Pops would love and they can improve his shooting or just use him as a defender and ball carrying option.
