Dariq Whitehead vs Sidy Cissoko https://www.nbadraft.net/forums/topic/dariq-whitehead-vs-sidy-cissoko/I’ve been thinking about this one for a while… and then sweaterflex mentioned both of them in our live user mock we’ve been doing…
Now here we have 2 players that play similar styles and roles at least on the college level freshmen year last year… On one hand we have Julian Phillips. He’s only slightly older than Walsh. But, he also has bigger hops as far as that goes, is slightly more athletic and did a lot of hustle plays in his own right. He played for Tennessee as a reminder, and in case you forgot Tennessee was the top defensive with Houston, as those 2 tournament teams were the best in the country. Well Phillips was a big part of that Tennessee defense. He’s got good agility, good tools and could be great as a glue guy that brings attitude and energy on the court.
On the other hand, we have Jordan Walsh – the heart and soul of Arkansas last year. No he wasn’t there best player, but he was the hustle guy who brings attitude on the court and is great for any locker room. He’s almost the same height as Phillips. Only within a half inch height of each other. Jordan Walsh is a good athlete, not quite the athlete Phillips is. Walsh is about the easiest kid to coach too. He’s probably the best locker room guy in the draft.I’m going Julian Phillips. Imo his tools are the difference. Both bring similar parts of their game to the table, but what you can’t teach is the athleticism of Phillips. Imo there’s not necessarily a wrong answer in these matchups, especially one like this, as it depends always on who lands where and gets what role… but in a vacuum Phillips gets the athlete bump.
anyways, who you got?

HitsterParticipantI can see both ending up on an NBA roster likely by 2nd round pick or if not via Summer League and training camp. Both guys we could argue would have developed more with another year or two in college. But were they ever going to become first round picks would have been at best 50/50 so if they are getting draft interest then rolling the dice is fair enough.
As Norrin says Phillips is a glue guy but Walsh has the hustle if either had that combined you’d have a first rounder. Both will be good team mates in my view and personally I’d have Walsh a few places highjer on my draft board.

NorrinRaddParticipantThey both have that glue and hustle to me… but why they’re not first round picks is due to how much energy they spend on defense results in shots on offence coming short because the energy’s already toast.. Whoever starts getting there cardio with even more endurance probably wins. Imo that’s a tie.

HitsterParticipantThe amount of energy they spend on de4fence is not a line I’ve heard that much before. Maybe they would be ideally used in short sharp bursts on the 2nd unit to keep up the pressure or even when teams are ahead and looking to close out games.

NorrinRaddParticipantNaw, probably wouldn’t here it much… But yes, it’s my theory. I used to do those types of statistics on myself as a glue guy at one point. I’d give it my all every game, especially on the defensive end. It wasn’t til’ I started running marathons that my shots would be on despite doing something like a full court press. The higher your endurance the easier it is to shoot for sure.

sweaterflexParticipantI see Philips as having higher offensive upside, he got to the line 9.3 times per 100 and made 82% versus Walsh who made 72% of his 4.3/ per 100 possessions. Arkansas played a tough schedule but also had more talent on paper than Tennessee, I was honestly disappointed in all of their top recruits from last year. I would take Philips late in the first and see him outplaying GG Jackson in the long run, Walsh can make it as a defensive minded bench guy but really needs to be a corner 3 ace.
