2024 Draft Prospects
Kevin McCullar vs Baylor Scheierman https://www.nbadraft.net/forums/topic/kevin-mccullar-vs-baylor-scheierman/
Yves Missi vs Kel’el WareSo these 2 bigs are about 7 pounds weight difference and the same height listed and only about a month apart from each other’s birthdays, despite Missi being the freshman. Who’s the better prospect.. who you got and why?
Missi is still a bit raw, but rebounds at a nice rate. He’s a very good defender on switches and defends at a high level, playing at a hard rate all the time. His offence is coming around but is still a work in progress.
With Kel’el Ware, there’s been some questions about his motor. Can he bring it night in and night out? He does however step up in big games, and well he had a very good year. Ware also possesses an outside shot that fits the perfect prototypical 3&D big.
I’ll take Kel’el Ware. He’s got the size and length and to me he is 2-0 vs Clingan in real life when it comes to matchups. Missi is a good upcoming talent, but Ware is with the other bigs at the top of the draft while Missi is just behind the top tier. Give me Ware in this matchup.
Anyways, who you got? Missi or Ware???

HitsterParticipantI’d say Ware is more NBA ready and I’d take him ahead of Missi at the moment. You can argue that with another year in the NCAA that Missi might be at the same level or have more long term upside. But Ware is 7ft with an NBA ready build, is a good rebounder and shot 42.5% from the 3 point line so would be my choice as a lottery pick and 3rd big on my list after Sarr and Clingan.

zolaParticipantI’ve already mentioned in recent post, Missi is my favorite big in this year class.
There is no way he won’t become plus rebounder, rim protector, pick’n’roll defender, screener. Missi already sets off-ball screens which is very rare for young prospects. His motor is relentless. He shows improvment in a lot of areas during the season, especially face up game and free throw shooting.
Missi grew up in Africa and started organised basketball latter, so right now he’s not skilled like other bigs, but despite that his stats and overall production is not much worse than Clingan’s, Filipowski’s or Ware’s, although they are sophomores. He didn’t lose match up against Filipowski. Missi can be on Nic Claxton level very soon, and even better in the future cause he’ll be much stronger than him.
I like Ware also, but my biggest concern is that he’ll never have strong lower body, so he’ll be pushed in the paint. He can rely on physical tools in college, but in NBA you need strenght and boxing out techique in the paint. Also Ware is looking more for his own scoring, he doesn’t work for a team that much. There is no too many bigs who are go to guys, I’m not sure is he that good to become one.

HitsterParticipantIf Missi has been playing at a higher level for far less time than some of the other guys. I wonder whether he could be better staying another year in college and potentially being a top 5 pick next year. But if he is a likely first rounder possibly even a lottery he’d need to go to a team who would be patient with him.
1+- Posted on: Fri, 04/12/2024 - 6:44am #1263562
NorrinRaddParticipantI get the appeal of both Missi and Ware. But even an improved Missi doesn’t mean he’d be a potential top 5 pick next year. I think it’s a more difficult path next year. He’s already officially declared this year though anyways. It is plausible that he ends up better long term than these other bigs. Imo though he’s somewhere in the mix of the top 5.

HitsterParticipantNext year’s draft does look a bit thin on C’s after Maluach on this site’s last mock but we could have Yang and Zikarsky to possibly consider. Until we know the draft order a guy like Missi is hard to place. If Toronto do get their 3 first rounders then I’d think he’d be a decent fit there and get time to develop. I don’t see him falling past the Knicks personally.
1+ - Posted on: Fri, 04/12/2024 - 1:56pm #1263567
zolaParticipantMissi already has decent body, plays good defence, sets good screens and rolls nice to the basket. It is enough to get him some minutes in NBA, so there is no reason for him to return. He will never be good scorer on his own, so highly unlikely he can be top 5 pick next year. But if he goes to a team with good point guard, he can become amazing low usage center. Guys like Gobert, Allen, Capela, Claxton, Gafford were all late first rounders, weren’t fancy picks, but prove very valuable in NBA and all of them are top 10 players from theirs draft classes.
1+ - Posted on: Fri, 04/12/2024 - 7:41pm #1263568
HitsterParticipantI’d have Missi probably going a bit higher than the guys you mentioned above. No-one knew Gobert was going to become the outstanding defensive big of the last decade. With the bigs in this year’s class I have Sarr, Clingan, Ware as my first 3 bigs being drafted. My next 3 are Missi, Filipowski and Edey who all have different games so the order I have them drafted will depend on which teams look the best fit for them but they would be the C’s I’d definitely take in the first round.
1+- Posted on: Fri, 04/12/2024 - 8:48pm #1263569
NorrinRaddParticipantI gotta say I was a Gobert believer from the get go – kind of all the guys mentioned but Capela tbh. But yeah, I can see Missi being a Robert Williams but more mobile if he gets a shot. If not, he’ll still be a solid player. I like Missi better than Edey and Filipowski. He’s way more versatile defensively and not far off overall.

HitsterParticipantGobert I would have had in the top 20 the year he was drafted. No-one could have seen he would have become the outstanding big of the last decade in the NBA.
Edey is clearly the best NCAA big but in the NBA I could see Kyle Filiip or MIssi being easier to fit into a lot of NBA rosters unless you played Edey in a half court situation whereby he was mainly used on defence as if you had a fastball team they wouldn’t wait for him to get up and down court.
1+- Posted on: Fri, 04/12/2024 - 11:14pm #1263571
NorrinRaddParticipantIdk, Gobert was the standing reach king when it came to draft time. I thought his stock was robbed draft time. I had a good feeling about him being an All Defensive force. Maybe not quite like he has done, but not that far off really. Capela is the one that surprised me out of the guys mentioned.
Edey does need a more suitable specific fit than Filipowski or Missi. Edey is hard to judge as an NBA prospect. Personally I like Tyler Smith as much if not more than Filipowski. DaRon Holmes too. Some team(s) later in the draft is going to really get a steal in the draft by drafting a quality big man that can come in and play 20 minutes right away and maybe more in the future. And of course certain teams make good players like Miami and Toronto. Others tank but develop wisely like the Spurs. And then there’s teams like the Pistons right now… eeek!

HitsterParticipantThe Pistons have Duren as their long term C so I don’t see them taking someone like Clingan but Sarr to play at PF might be an option if they cannot get Risacher. I’m toying with having Minny pick Edey at 28 as they have Gobert so could possibly have a situation to fit him in there.
Tyler Smith I’ve got down as a first round pick I’d draft Missi before him but which team both end up on I cannot quite work it out. DaRon Holmes I quite like at Boston with the last first round pick – Al Horford is pushing 38 so a scoring, rebounding big makes sense for them.
1+- Posted on: Sat, 04/13/2024 - 6:11am #1263576
NorrinRaddParticipantFunny, I read some article by Woj. that Clingan is in the #1 pick talke. smh. Doubt it though, but it only takes one team.
I like Missi better than Smith in most scenarios, but there’s a world where Smith’s services would fit better. Sarr on the Pistons at PF could be interesting. I like Matas as a fit there too if no Risacher available. I wish the Pistons developed there prospects into better players than they have been in recent memory though. Cade and Duren should be doing more. It took forever for Ivey to get going…
DaRon at Boston makes a ton of sense. I could see him playing along side of Bam at Miami also. Some competitive team like that where he could rotate in and work out well.

HitsterParticipantI think there will be better bigs available than Holmes when Miami pick in 13 to 16 range roughly. Could Ware and Bam Bam play as a combo I wonder? Tyler Smith could be the choice there and possibly Salaun. If a guy like Castle slipped into Miami’s lap I don’t see Pat Riley passing on him.
Clingan doesn’t go first IMO he can be top 5 and looks a nice fit at Charlotte, Washington, Toronto even Spurs if they wanted to go Twin Towers have Clingan guard the paint and Wemby blocking away from the basket.
0 - Posted on: Sat, 04/13/2024 - 4:25pm #1263580
zolaParticipantWhat separates Clingan from Missi? IMO Clingan has more developed body, which he uses to dominante college bigs, but Missi has more room to add strenght, so that difference will be much smaller in few years. Both of them are non shooters and hardly expect to become ones. Also neither have advanced post moves. Clingan is better scorer right now because of strenght not skill. Clingan has little better feel for the game, is better passer, but not like he is Jokic, Sabonis or Sengun. Clingan is mobile for his size, but still below average for NBA bigs standards. Missi will be above average both in strenght and mobility, similar like Jarrett Allen. Pick’en’roll is fundamental part of todays game, so Missi will have huge advantage there.
Except mobility, Sarr doesn’t have any skills to play PF, no handle, no shooting, no passing, no vision. He would be terrible fit in Detroit, they would be worst spacing team by far.
1+ - Posted on: Sat, 04/13/2024 - 7:47pm #1263581
NorrinRaddParticipantWhat separates Clingan from Missi really isn’t much – it’s size and a ready now factor. They’re not far off imo. I don’t think Clingan should be considered for the top pick – but hey it’s where we’re at. I think the Grizzlies are Clingan’s best fit, Toronto is a good choice too. Not sure Clingan is better than a healthy Mark Williams in Charlotte though. Infact, it would be a bit redundant imo. To me Clingan is rated too high right now due to winning the NCAA championship twice in a row. That is a big deal that gets you publicized ratings. Missi starting the game later hides his stock a bit. They’re about the same age. I think both succeed. Personally I have Ware ahead of both. Imo Ware fits better in about every scenario than both. He blocks shots, rebounds, hits long range shots and gives you the basics that you need in a big. Not saying that can’t change with development, but Ware to me is being slept on by the consensus. Missi is to a degree too.
DaRon Holmes to Miami would be more of a trade scenario than just drafting him head up in the teens. I was just saying it would be a dream fit. Boston is another great dream fit though.
Offensively speaking, Sarr has some holes in his game and the 4 spot wouldn’t be the best fit. It would work defensively though for sure. If he ever develops on the offensive end, he could be the best player in the draft. His defense is very legit though.
1+ - Posted on: Sat, 04/13/2024 - 8:04pm #1263582
HitsterParticipantI think Sarr playing away from the basket as a PF rather than a boards dominant C suits him better initially.
Teams draft on upside a lot of time and if they think Missi is untapped then that can put him ahead of more NBA ready guys on some draft lists. Its finding him a good landing space IMO – Toronto at 17 could be a nice fit for him depending on what happens with their pick via the Spurs.
NOP has two first rounders and will look to add depth in a couple of positions on Missi would be an option there. The Knicks with a couple of picks two if he wants to have defence drilled into him and not play much initially then Thibs would be a perfect tutor.
Clingan to Memphis or even Ware I like as a fit too.
1+ - Posted on: Wed, 04/17/2024 - 12:22am #1263629
sweaterflexParticipantI’m surprised people reference Messi’s upside, he’s a pretty straightforward archetype in the Clint Capela/Daniel Gafford mold, will probably top out around the 15-20th best center at the league. Robert Williams III was probably the best weakside rim protector in the league aside from Jonathan Isaac, I doubt Messi gets there.
I prefer Ware as a potential floor spacer and post weapon on mismatches, though his floor is probably lower. There is a chance Holmes offers a nice middle ground between the two, though his defense might put him in more of a Bobby Portis 6th man/spot starter role.
Clingan top 5 is pretty reasonable in such a weak draft class, Kessler should have been top 10 in a stronger class and Clingan is comparable, probably better on offense and slightly worse on defense but with slightly better size.
