Jordan Hawkins vs Gradey Dick https://www.nbadraft.net/forums/topic/jordan-hawkins-vs-gradey-dick/Noah Clowney vs Dereck Lively
Both these prospects have roughly the same draft range. Both play the same position. Both are improving their outside shooting. They can both improve their free throw shooting. Both are quality defenders that block or alter shots. They both have some jump to them. Clowney is about 5 months younger, also 2-3 inches smaller in height and doesn’t quite have the strength Lively has. Lively isn’t a slouch on his feet by all means, but Clowney has lighter feet and switches great. So, if you’re the GM of a team looking at these 2 prospects, who do you got?
I’m going Clowney here. The shooting is slightly better imo. The feet movement of Clowney is just awesome. I can see if you believe in Lively being the former top prospect of this class being less hyped. He did improve more. But Clowney although he didn’t finish great had some good showings in that Alabama uniform. Maybe not in the tournament so much, but I look at the Houston game and came out realizing Clowney won that game for Alabama. Both prospects imo should have some success though.

armchairgmParticipantNoah Clowney

HitsterParticipantI see Noah is down on this site’s 2024 draft but if he does declare this year he’d be a likely first rounder.
This is an interesting match up as they are slightly different type players – Lively is a better defensive anchor but Clowney is quicker and looks a better perimeter defender at the moment and probably the better current shooter.
If it was a choice between the two I’d personally favour Lively as you cannot teach size.

NorrinRaddParticipantNot sure lively is the better anchor. He does have the size and strength over Clowney though.

HitsterParticipantClowney vs GG Jackson would have been an interesting one to do..
I cannot really find a good NBA comparison for Noah despite him being the perfect sort of mobile athletic big a lot of NBA teams currently like to go for.

NorrinRaddParticipantImo Clowney defensively is a lot like Nicolas Claxton. His offensive game should be better though, so he doesn’t have a perfect comparison. I think GG is going to rise come combine.

armchairgmParticipantI liken Clowney to a Wendell Carter type player

NorrinRaddParticipantHe’s 60 pounds heavier than Clowney.

HitsterParticipantCarter always compared well to Al Horford I thought so I don’t really see Clowney being similar there. Sizewise Clowney reminds me of Jalen Smith.

NorrinRaddParticipantThat’s a good floor for sure.

HitsterParticipantThis site has compared CLowney to Nic Claxton from the Nets which looks a fair suggestion.

sweaterflexParticipantClaxton is too high of a comp for Clowney in my mind, Claxton’s bball IQ was high enough to be a reasonable initiator at the college level. Clowney is like a somewhat poor man’s version of Isaiah Jackson, similar aspiration of playing on the perimeter but should really just be catching lobs. Jackson was a significantly better shot blocker, but Clowney was part of a strong defense at Alabama. Lively improved throughout the season and you can’t teach that kind of length, he’s a reasonable pick anywhere after the lottery.

OhCanada-ParticipantI think Derrick Lively could be this drafts steal. He has the size to in theory matchup with the games elite Centers who are taking all the MVP’s. The quickness to switch onto smaller guards so he wont be exploitable. Outstanding athleticism and improving three point range. I dont see him getting past the Lakers.

HitsterParticipantGood point Oh Canada that 16th to 19th pick range with Utah, Lakers, Miami and GSW – I don’t see too many good prospects slipping past that quartet. Lakers would certainly be a great landing spot for Lively having LBJ and AD on the same team as him. He’d be expected to rebound and defend and would get some free shots so his offence could be developed slowly.

OhCanada-ParticipantYeah I also think Trayce Jackson Davis is a player to watch when the Lakers and Warriors are selecting. I heard GSW scouted Nnaji heavily and are interested. They relied way too much on Looney and he gassed out against the Lakers. Plus these teams need bodies against Jokic out West and Embiid out East. I think Trayce can step in and learn that Looney role immediately, I even feel like if the Warriors draft him he makes the all rookie team. He’ll be there on my mock unless we hear of promises.
