Ausar Thompson vs Anthony Black
On a blank sheet of paper if you were to write down the following you could come up with either player:
Elite defensive potential on the perimeter or wing
Connective tissue with handle and passing ability
Needs to improve shot
Great athlete
Adjusted well playing out of position
Doesn’t have to be alpha but capable
Portable player potentially in multiple lineups.Ultimately they are close in size. They are similar in traits. They have similar skills. Black is more battle tested, a year younger, and has a better FT% and rate, but you can’t teach speed/agility/overall athleticism Ausar possesses. Both are projected lottery picks. Who’s the better prospect?
Anthony Black has proven at a young age he’s capable of running an offense whether it’s from the pick n pop/roll, playing aggressive and getting to the line at a high rate and making limited mistakes. The pressure he brings on defense is amazing. He brings a lot to the table and could give a team worthy minutes probably immediately. Anthony Black is one of the most NBA ready prospects in the draft. He has a solid high floor. My NBA comparison I have for Anthony Black is a combination of Shake Milton/Dyson Daniels. Not crazy about the comparison or others such as Lonzo Ball I’ve seen for Anthony Black, but I do know what he’s capable of.
Ausar Thompson, although he’s a year older – has a higher ceiling in theory. He is a little more athletic and plays crazy defense himself. And his athleticism is near elite status, not just great. Although Amen gets more attention, Ausar has the higher floor because he doesn’t have to be the man but can likely be. This doesn’t mean he’s a shoe in though. His bust potential is more than Black’s. I’d bet on Ausar to carve out a good career. My NBA comparison for Ausar Thompson would be a lesser Scottie Pippen or Andre Iguodala or even a bigger Tony Allen type player who can bring the ball up court and be an elite defender on the perimeter and wing.
I think I’d go the higher ceiling here in a vacuum here in Ausar Thompson, although I don’t think there’s a wrong answer. I like both prospects.

OhCanada-ParticipantJourneyman Svi Mykhailiuk has a career average of 25 points per game in the G League with 9 games played. He’s just too good for that league. He gets to the NBA and struggles with consistency against players with as much athleticism, size and length as him. and also just becomes very streaky. The margin for error becomes alot smaller when he takes the jump. Overtime Elite is a terrible league. Theres no two ways about it. Its very difficult to properly judge how good the Thompson twins are watching clips from that league. But they have great size with their ability to handle the ball and playmake and they have great athleticism.
Ausur specifically seems to have become a more consistent shooter of the two but those shooting inconsistency’s could look really bad at the pro level. Its also had to say how he would fit into certain roles when going to the NBA. He may just have all the right skills and ball IQ to fit wherever the team that picks him wants him, although he most likely struggles. We saw Leonard Miller look like KD at Fort Erie only to struggle a bit in the predraft combine have to withdraw from the draft, but after a year with G League Elite he has started to sharpen up his fundamentals (still has a long way to go) and create an identity as a slasher/cutter, gritty defender and rebounder Now his stock is back and he should be a top 15 pick imo. Its alot harder to learn those fundamentals in the NBA.
Black on the other hand is alot like Dyson Daniels from last years draft. He doesn’t have that same wow factor as Ausur but he is a consistent presence and by that its kind of you know what your gonna get throughout 30 minutes with him. Hes also a tremendous defensive player and has the size to guard many positions. He played for a team in a conference which is alot easier to gauge where he is at in his development and despite being inconsistent as a primary ballhandler he proved he has the talent to be that guy in the future.
I hope the Thompson twins participate in predraft workouts. It would be a bold move for them to say were gonna risk it, come out and show our value. They probably wont but thats where I would make a decision on who’s better between these two prospects. Until then I would likely just take Black because I trust his best skills will translate.

HitsterParticipantAmen vs Asur would have been a fun one to do. I have Amen ahead of Asur so doing Black vs Asur does make sense. Sizewise they are very equal and playing in different settings its hard to get a handle on who is a better prospect. I always had Black ahead of Asur and I’m tempted to stay that way after Black was the one positive thing in the Razorbacks NCAA tournament defeat.
Black I’d see as being more an NBA creative player whilst Asur will be a creative option but could be more an Iggy/Andrew Wiggins (GSW era) type player who is a vital top running mate to maybe one or two star players. Both would fit nicely at Orlando with their pick via the Bulls if it comes over. Also Portland would likely have a good look at them both. I’d fancy both to be drafted within the top 10 and it is possible one could go as high as 5 after Wemby, Scott, Amen and Miller in whatever order the last 3 fall.

sweaterflexParticipantI think Black projects to have a higher median career than Ausur as a 4th/5th best player on a high level team, I just don’t love taking that kind of player in the lottery, where he’ll likely land on a bad team that doesn’t really need that kind of guy. Everything depends on the jumper with Ausur as his athleticism/slashing ability is more A/A- than Amen’s A++. I’d feel ok taking Ausur in 8-12 range and Black in the 18-25 range.
