OhCanada-ParticipantOriginally wanted to wait until after the tournament for this conversation but it seems like we can’t stop mentioning these two players in the Ivey/Holmgren thread.
I have Jabari Smith here. I don’t know if he ever becomes a first option at the next level but I would use him similar to how Klay Thompson is used. Have him running through screens looking to get freed up for open jumpshots. Three dribbles or less. Any team in the league could use this skillset and he would compliment any other high usage players. Lights out shooting can make any team competitive.
As for Paulo Banchero I like him as a versatile point forward offensively but I’m not completely sold on him as a first option. He reminds me a bit of Julius Randle for better or worse. He lacks the wingspan of a two way forward like Siakam or Barnes and lacks the elite athleticism to be that elite first option like Griffin. All of this is being extremely picky though and I still see him as a player with high upside.

NorrinRaddParticipantThis one is tough too, but in a vacuum I’ll take the upside of Jabari Smith. I don’t think either one of these prospects would do a GM wrong though.

armchairgmParticipantPaulo Banchero.

BKGingerSnapParticipantI actually think Banchero is being slept on. It would be great if we had legit measurements for Banchero but if he is actually 6’10 240, he couldbe a very deadly 5 in a small ball lineup. With that being said though there are few things more valuable right now than an athletic, defensive big with a great 3 point shot. Jabari’s got it. If the choice was between these two I’m going Jabari for every nba team.

HitsterParticipantI’d take Jabari for his superior shooting and if the 3 point range is as good as people say then he’s an ideal NBA frontcourter. going forward. Banchero I can see having a very solid career and having All Star potential. I could see his upside being Al Horford level but probably a better scorer but not such a good defensive player. His comparisons of Juwan Howard or Julius Randle are pretty good and both were all stars. If he is a taller version of Randle then that would be good and I can see him being a low risk pick and having a good NBA career.
In the past the more physical and stronger Banchero would have been the better prospect but in today’s NBA I have to go with the more athletic elite shooter in Smith.

kobyzParticipantDo you see Smith becoming more than a third option on offense?
0- Posted on: Sun, 04/03/2022 - 2:59am #1254842
OhCanada-ParticipantThats the thing. For me I don’t even want Smith being my 1st option or primary ball handler. If he’s your 2nd or 3rd option next to Cade with Detroit, or Fox and Sabonis with Sacramento , Haliburton with Indiana, or even Lillliard and Simons in Portland well those are the situations I think he really thrives in. Not sure if hes gonna be as good on a team like Orlando that really hasn’t developed much structure at this point.

kobyzParticipantBanchero, he is like a more composed, smoother Randle, I’ll say Randle/Danny Manning hybrid

HitsterParticipantDanny Manning is an interesting comparision. I’d have to check back him at his peak been a few years since I’ve watched much of his stuff. But another All Star guy who didn’t quite kick on and had a few injury issues. I keep seeing these borderline All Star level comparisions for Banchero and think more and more less upside but a lower risk pick. At worse you potentially get a complimentary starter/ 3rd star on a strong team.
