NBA Comparison: N/A

Strengths: A 6’4 shooting guard with an excellent wingspan, true athleticism and impressive leaping abilities, Durrell Summers has a body suited for NBA play … His outside game is improved, and it seems when his shot is on, he’s tough to slow down … He shoots better and more frequently off of catch and shoot and in spot up situations … His athleticism around the basket allows him to convert, with most of his points in the paint coming in transition … Runs the floor well and finishes strong on the break … Defensively he has the qualities to become a solid defender if he can get motivated and keep his energy level up …

Weaknesses: Anyone who has watched Summers knows his biggest weakness is being able to put up impressive performances on a consistent basis … When his outside game is off, he becomes a non-factor … Questionable shot selection at times … Rarely shoots off the dribble … Needs to improve his ball handling skills and decision making … Only attempts 2 free throws per game, which is reflective off his inability to create off the dribble and unaggressive approach in terms of attacking the rim in a half court set… Missing an explosive first step… Too one-dimensional offensively… Needs to up his defensive intensity on a more consistent basis …

Overall:
Summer really has all the tools, he just needs to put them all together … His inconsistency has been a theme throughout his entire college career, but when he’s good, he looks like a first rounder … With Chris Allen and Raymar Morgan both leaving Michigan State, Summers should have plenty of opportunities to fine-tune his game and show scouts that his strong play in March can occur on a more consistent basis …

Jonathan Wasserman  – 9/28/2010

Strengths: Summers has incredible leaping ability. He hangs in the air and takes contact very well. He is capable of highlight reel dunks and can also hit the three pointer consistently. He can get by defenders with nice bursts of speed when attacking the basket. His lateral quickness is excellent. He shows good rebounding ability for a guard. With a 69 wingspan, his thin body is helped considerably on defense at this level of play by his length.

Weaknesses: Durrell disappears for long periods of time. He seems to get unfocused and unaggresive. Hes not the best shooter off the dribble. He also isnt that great at the intangibles of the game. Hes got a thin frame and is a little short for the shooting guard spot, and his long wingspan may not overcome this deficiency at the NBA level.
