valentineHe was hypped more in Middle School than Lebron or Ben Simmons. Now he’s posting stat lines like 17&17 in Summer League despite coming straight out of High School. I realse its just Summer League and he’s the definition of raw….but the upside is so obvious.
Scouting Report:
- 7’1" and set athleticism records for people 6’11" and over
- Able to handle the ball and stretch the floor
- Crazy defensive potential
Honestly…what more do people want out of an 18yo bigman?
Yet, it comes to the draft and people have him in the second round? Seriously, only 3 or 4 people on this forum were prepared to back his talent and they got ridiculed.
I’m pretty sure people didn’t realise that he was already good, and all I heard was terms like "project" and " needs 2 years in the D-League"
So…those that had him mocked anywhere from pick 15 onwards, why didn’t you see this coming? He was the most hypped HS player OF ALL TIME!

David..PaulsParticipantI think for the same reason people like Lillard and Mcullom are picked lower. Because they didn;t see him play against "top" compeition, he was overlooked.

For_Never_EverParticipantLebron James is the most hyped HS player of all time it isn’t even close. Well deserved because he backed it up right away.

r377ParticipantYes Thon Maker was well hyped three or four years ago. Not sure, wasn’t it something to do with his age ?
Milwaukee looks to have done well rolling the dice on the inters. Giannis and now Maker

r377ParticipantAcutally this draft class was strong full of Inters. I reckon there will be more than a few teams kicking themselves over passing up on some of them….
Not including Maker and George the Greek, but most of the Inters got drafted lower than I had predicted….

SeattleSuperChronicsParticipantBucks should be interesting next year. Who starts at Center?

machu46ParticipantIf Monroe isn’t traded, I’m guessing that he’ll be moved back into the starting center spot. If he is traded, then it’ll depend on if they acquire another center. If Monroe is moved and the centers are just Henson and Plumlee, I believe Plumlee will start. I’m kinda hoping that Henson gets a shot at it though.

ChoppyParticipantA mock draft is different to a big board. One (big board) you put your top players from one to 60. The other (mock draft) you put where you think they will be drafted. I had Thon at 18. Not because I thought there were 17 better players but because that’s where I thought he’d go.

OhCanada-ParticipantMaker would have fit perfectly on the Raptors as a guy you can develop as a 4 and a 5. The only thing that is keeping me from pulling my hair out and sending hate mail to Masai Ujiri is the fact that Poeltl also looks good.

DanielcmccartyParticipantThe reason people had him mocked outside of the lottery was the fear of the unknown. What if he didn’t pan out? Then some GM is getting ridiculed for choosing a high school player that needs 30 pounds of muscle added to him to play in a mans league. It was a high risk high reward pick. Remember; it’s just summer league.

Mr. 19134ParticipantI predicted on here and in other forums that Maker would end up going 9th or 10th. I really thought the Raps would take him. He was killing workouts and interviews and felt like he was just as good a prospect as Bender

ItsVictorOladipoParticipantTo be honest thought I saw alot of the same strengths in Zhou Qi; ridiculous length, good athleticism, terrific shooting range, ability to stretch the floor on O and protect the rim on D. I thought he would sneak into the top 20 based on potential and a rare skill set and he fell to the middle of the second round.

theballerwayParticipantMakers hype. If you went by the early mixtapes which generated most of the hype the things that stood out were his ‘guard like’ skills: coast to coast ,crossing guys over, shooting the long ball and rare agility for a 7 footer. The hype gave the impression that he might be this 7 foot wing player , a longer albeit slower Durant type player. in the public/fan eye its like wow but then people/scouts/media naturally started to critique his strength and post game etc. I think he has spent the last few years developing his strength and post game aspects moving away from the more perimeter orientated player we saw at first. This led to re evaluation and by the time he was a senior he was – still long and mobile stronger but still real thin, known for his length(shot blocker) and shooting ability (inconsistent?) and non stop motor. This is not as sexy sounding as 7 ft Durant like guard, so you maybe not slip under the radar but more blend in the pack while new toys like Skal are hype like he used to be. That’s hype for you though. Its a cycle……
Draft wise though the ‘Agegate’ type scandal was a killer. Iknow this site wasn’t feeling him but many had him in late teens or just outside the lottery even though there have always been murmurs about his age but the pictures and testimonies from classmates (all of a sudden) clearly put the red flags way up. The funny thing is the Bucks moved so swiftly we will never know the full impact of those yearbook pics etc. If it ever comes out that heis 22 or so though that’s a big knock on his character(flat out lied) as well as his development potential imo. He is definitely living up to his scouting report though
