NBA Comparison: Mardy Collins

Strengths: Athletic player, good at getting into the paint… Has a scorer’s mentality and is always looking for a way to put the ball in the basket … A stadout leaper at the college level … Pretty good free throw shooter, going 80.1% from the line in college … Fast in the open court and in transition … Good ball handler… Has good size for an NBA guard, but can also play the point … Makes big shots and is used to having the ball in his hands at the end of games… Can shoot off the dribble well … Is an explosive player who heats up quickly and can score in bunches … Good finisher with his right hand from any angle …

Weaknesses:
Not a huge threat from deep for an NBA guard, shot 33.5% from deep in college… Not a great rebounder with 2.8 per game in college … Isn’t always looking to dish the ball despite having the ball a lot in the Syracuse offense (24.4% usage rate with just 2.1 assists per game) … Settles for a lot of threes instead of using his drive … Does not have great first step quickness … Don’t really know how he plays man-to-man defense because of the Syracuse zone … Disappears at times offensively … Doesn’t like to finish with his left … Will turn 22 in Sepetember ...

Outlook: A highly touted prospect out of high school, Tyus Battle has been solid but not excellent in his three years at Syracuse. While it seems like a disappointment, he has done one thing very well… Score the basketball at will. Because of this and his explosiveness, Battle could be a late second rounder, but will likely go undrafted. He did not shoot the ball from deep very well, which should worry NBA teams if he wants to grab an NBA roster spot. If Battle can improve his shot, then his size and versatility can give him a backup guard spot.

Notes: Measured 6’7’’ in shoes, with a 6’8.5’’ wingspan and 199 lbs at the 2015 Nike Basketball Academy ... Born September 23rd, 1997 in New Jersey… Attended Gil St. Bernard’s School in Gladstone, NJ before transferring to St. Joseph’s in Metuchen, NJ… 5-star recruit originally committed to Michigan but recommitted to Syracuse in his final decision… Averaged 19.1 points, 9.1 rebounds and 5.1 assists in his final year in high school… All-ACC 2nd team his sophomore year and 3rd team his junior year…
