ESPN has confirmed that UNC jr. guard Larry Drew has left the team and plans to transfer…Officials at UNC havent made a official announcement, but could do so later today…Drew had started the teams’s first 17 games before being replace in the starting lineup by freshman guard Kendall Marshall…Drew was averaging 4 points & 4 assists in 22 minutes this season…UNC has won 4 straight games since Drew was replaced in the lineup…Students and several UNC Supporters had called for coach Roy Williams to make an adjustment with the lineup….

Why transfer? He is far from  being a NBA prospect.

NBA prospect or not, he would probably like a fresh start.  Maybe he feels humiliated by being replaced by a freshman, even though it’s obviously the right move.  He doesn’t have the skill and size to be a good 2 guard and doesn’t have the poise and ball handling ability to be a good point.

Yeah, I really dont think he is a legit NBA prospect either.
He’s kinda quick with a little handles, but he is also shooting a terrible percentage this year at 38%, and to me he doesn’t seem to have much of a mid range game at all.

Sources say his dad informed coach Williams of the news this morning…..Williams was surprised by the news..Becuz Drew acted like he was cool with the demotion…He still was getting playing time and some say he was playing better coming off the bench….

Center Tyler Zeller said the other day that Marshall was better at creating for his teammates and Drew was more of a defender than a playmaker..

Whats up with recruits from Cali? They have problems sticking around at UNC..The Wear twins,Alex Stephenson now Drew…

when parents think they know whats best for their kids! Larry isn’t a NBA player and probably not a overseas player- Him and his parents have to face the facts. Also if he’s giving up, because he was beaten out by a freshman-that just tells me this guy is a quitter.

The sad part of this, is that Larry was playing his best basketball after he was sent to the bench.

This reminds me of the high school kid who attends 7 High Schools- everytime something goes wrong, just transfer

Im happy for this guy.  he was being hated on by just about every UNC fan there is….hopefully he can step it up wherever he goes for his senior season and have the freedom to play like he should.  i think this guy has potential to be a 15ppg 6assists and 3rebs type of guy

Hey, just because he was considered a big prospect coming out of HS does not mean that he is necessarily an NBA guy. Larry Drew is a good player, by college basketball standards, but he was not a great player and while he more than likely will not make the NBA, he has every right to transfer and play at a school that suits his abilities better. It is difficult to transfer and make the NBA, but I think a lot of transfers end up at least getting more PT and finishing out their college careers on a high note. Larry Drew could not cut it as the starting PG for UNC, but their are a number of other college teams that would be happy to have him and would probably end up being a better fit. That is part of why transferring exists, it gives you the ability to go to another school that may be better for you. Good for Larry Drew, and more than likely good for the Heels. It frees up a scholarship and gives fans the knowledge that Kendall Marshall stays at point. I think it was a good idea for Larry Drew and I wish him success. Transfers can play huge roles on college programs, and I expect that Larry Drew will have a much better senior year than he had junior year.

First of all, he has had one of the most disapointing careers ever. As a freshy, coming off the bench, he looked okay, filled his role right, and they won a title. But in his 1 1/2 years as starter, he has been god aweful, carolina fans have hated him, and almost assoiciated him with the reason the team has been pretty damn bad. Now, they are on an upswing because he isnt playing as much and he feels completely humiliated. This transfer doesnt surprise me one bit. It makes complete sense. And as Quincy brought up, guys who arent any good transfer and ened up in the NBA all the time, so lets not act like he has no chance.

He may need a fresh look, it has happened before when someone transfered and just got in a the right system with lesser expectations.

I dont see the point in taing the easy way out and being transfered. These players lose alot of experience and oppurtunity getting tansfeered and if they stayed, fought through the dilemna, and get what they want through work ethic, it would look great on them as individuals and helo their core skills.

Wally Judge was a huge surprise this year, idk what happened there.

Given the revolving door of guards that is in Spartan nation, I could see this guy ending up at Michigan State. Or, perhaps he heads home to Cali, like a lot of transfers like to do.

Is transfering the easy way out?. How many guys have transferred and went further in there career basketball wise because of it?. He needs to do whats best for him and maybe trasferring is whats best for him just like the kid that got drafted from baylor who transferred from michigan or Curry’s brother or dahanty Jones or my personal favorite Joe Stephens ( he played for colorado and averaged something like 4 min a game before transferring his SR year to little Rock and ended up in the NBA because of it.). Just liek coach’s go to better programs to raise there pay.

honestly say you would like to have Larry Drew running your team at point guard! The guy has no jump shot and makes NO ONE BETTER-

Drew’s pattened move was- Zeller throws it into Larry- Larry races up past half court and stops- then throws it back to Zeller as he crosses half court!

Also let’s not act like Larry was a lockdown defender- look at how many times we got torched by opposing guards!

There have been many guys who peopel have honestly said they wouldnt want. Landry fields wasn’t considered anywhere near a NBA prospect at one point ( 4ppg as a soph). And then there was the fottball player who played for UNC who was nothing more then a energy bench guy untill his SR…can’t recall his name right now

Theres a very very long list of guys who didn’t even look like they Belonged at a high level school

Larry has had time to develop- he’s been the starter for 1 and a half years. I could understand if he wasn’t getting any clock, but he was.  Larry has been given every chance to succeed and he hasn’t performed. Also with his DAD being a NBA coach, you would think Larry would have a high basketball IQ- not the case.

Fact is he gotten beaten out by a freshman and couldn’t deal with it.

David Noel might be the guy you were thinking of- drafted by the Bucks in the 2nd round. Different case, because Nowl had to play behind guys and never got a chacne until they left.

Larry….come to Duk…..you know what? Nevermind.

Go to Kansas St. He could develop there I think and people are sleeping on Willie Reed, another transfer for KSU

And there have been guys who have played alot of min and still didn’t do much untill they trasferred. Drew is not the first player to be in this situationa nd he wont be the last. This isn’t something that just has never happened before

Instead of working hard and getting his starting nod back he quits on his teammates AND himself by transferring. The starting nod was practically given to him since they were very low on talent, now that he has to work for it he quits. This guy has been in college for almost three full years but hardly improved… Everyone knows Marshall is the better man for the position except for Drew. He obviously can’t take the heat so he’s getting the fuck out of the kitchen.

Now he can concentrate on not living up to his potential as a starter for a lower profile team as a 5th year senior.

So he should stay in a situation thats not better for him instead of going to a better situation?..that makes zero sense. Should coach’s do the same thing?  if a coach is coaching university of nowhere and gets a offer to coach Kansas they should turn that down? if you’re at a job where you can’t get a raise but there is another job where you have a better chance you shouldn’t go?..So you have aproblem with someone going to a better situation because its better for there career? I know if i’m playing for a team and someone is starting for me who has out played me i’m gonna play hard but i will transfer if there is another school where i can play more and start, thats not quiting thats looking out for you’re best intrest which is what Coach’s and colleges do all the time

I’m telling you, the Kansas State idea is perfect for him. He will need a season to transfer but when you think about it, he could be a good PG in the Big 12 and he develop with guys already there (Similar to Wes Johnson at Cuse) and point guard as of now, is the toughest position to get coming out of high school

no talent- it’s not like he going to transfer and all of sudden become an all-american!

You keep saying he’s leaving  to make himself better- problem is, he can’t get better. In 3 years he never improved and every summer, he left for California. While the rest of the team stick around Chapel Hill and played pick-up together.

I’m going on record to say, this is most attention Larry Dtrew will ever recieve as a basketball player.

Quincey where can he go and actually succeed? Also have you ever seen Larry play- because if you have, you would he’s the human turnover!

It’s not like Wally Judge transferring out, this is a guy who is 3 months from being a senior in college who just flat out got out played and beat out.  UNC was not better when he was on the court, and it’s not like he’s playing for a no name team and then a top program is going to swoop him up and he’ll be their starter.

I get that some coaches and some players don’t mesh, but to me he just failed to develop, got beat out and is looking else where.  I don’t think it’s a move thats going to get him an NBA contract.

I was reading on some sites and saw some analysts saying he’s not a D-1 player..That he should go to a D-2 school…

But i think he was in a system that didnt fit him….Becuz he looked confused on the court..

Not a D1 player? He’s not great but the kid did put up 8ppg and 5 or 6 ast with a good turnover ration as a soph. Thats not longer D1 worthy ??..And in the ACC?

I agree Rudeboy he didn’t look like the system fit him very well
