HandDownManDown13ParticipantGuys, I might be channelling my inner homer here, but I think Ryan Kelly should have made the Rising Stars game. While he’s played less games than Olynyk, he’s recently been thrust into a starting role with the Lakers, and has played efficiently, despite the team’s lack of continuity.
Kelly is currently 7th among rookies in scoring average. Here are their per 36 numbers:
PTS / REB/AST / STL / BLK / TOV / fg% / 3p% / ft
Kelly: 13.7/ 5.8 / 2.0 / 0.7 / 0.8 / 1.4 / .427/.338/.851
Olynyk: 13.0 / 8.6 / 3.1 / 0.9 / 0.9 / 2.9 / .432 /.308/.814
Now, these numbers are very similar. Olynyk grabs more boards because he exclusively plays center. Olynyk also averages 6.2 fouls per 36 versus Kelly’s 4.3. Kelly also plays slightly more minutes, and has a slightly lower usage percentage.
The Difference that puts Kelly above Olynyk I think is in the metric stats:
ts%/ TOV% / FTr / Ortg / Drtg / PER
RK: .571 / 10.6 / .427/ 112 / 110 / 12.4
KO: .502/18.1 / .245 / 100 / 105 / 12.3
Overall, It’s kind of a push. Ryan Kelly has been hot of late, scoring double figures in 7 of his last 10, including a career high 26 against Cleveland. Olynyk has been productive for the whole season, but Kelly is really coming into his own right now.

Jester87ParticipantYeah, probably Ryan Kelly deserved more. I think Olynyk would’ve had just as good a season if he played for D’Antoni, but since he doesn’t, Kelly should be there. Also I think he’s having a better season than pretty much any rookie but MCW, Burke, Oladipo and Hardaway Jr. It’s not like Mason Plumlee has done much more than both Kellys. Probably the fact that he has played "only" 28 games and started a bit later because he was initially assigned to the D-League team hurt him. But if he keeps playing like he is and none of the other rookies step up he has good chances of making one of the all rookie team.
Also funny how none of the players that were in the conversation for the first pick will play the game, except maybe for Oladipo (and he wasn’t really considered as an option with the first overall pick).
