Just curious, what do you think was the worst way to lose?

Seahawks 43, Broncos 8 – with Peyton Manning having one of his last great seasons and then getting absolutely crushed in the Super Bowl

Finals games 3-5 (Spurs 111, Heat 92/ Spurs 107, Heat 86/ Spurs 104, Heat 87) – Getting steamrolled in 3 straight Finals games to lose the title. Then compounded with LeBron leaving for Cleveland.

Germany 7, Brazil 1 – Losing on your home field in a World Cup semi-final by 6 goals.

I would say the Brazil loss is the worst because the country put like 9 billion dollars into hosting the World Cup and soccer fans in other countries seem to treat soccer like its life and death.

They are all equally bad in their own way.

The Seahawks bashing on the Broncos was horrible because of the MVP season of P. Manning and the record setting offense. With that horrific loss, Manning proved he can never be on the same level as Joe Montana, Tom Brady, etc.

Brazil spent millions upon millions making Brazil and the Brazil national team look good. Instead they were smashed unmercifully by the Germans. The streets of Rio were flooded by Brazilian tears that day. And they didn’t even win 3rd place to go out with dignity. People honestly may have lost their lives to riots going on in Brazil after the world cup.

And the Heat getting obliterated by the Spurs works against Lebron the same way it worked against Manning. People look at Lebron and they see the 2-3 Finals record and people cross him out of the discussion being the greatest of all time. And frankly they are right, LeBron will never EVER be even close to the same level as Jordan. And I think the majority of basketball fans feel the same.

They inbound it and you steal it. You run down the court and no one is following you. All you have to do is make they layup and your team wins the championship and you are the hero. Except when you go up for the layup the ball rolls around on the rim and right as time expires it falls off the rim, without going in the net.

 I think the close losses are even tougher.  The Celtics loss in the 2010 Finals or the Spurs loss in the 2013 Finals are two of the toughest defeats because there are so many "what ifs" that can be replayed in your head.

 The Celtics weren’t going to win that game 7 in LA in 2010. Hard to win when your playing 5 on 8 the in the 4th quarter. In the end, Boston could not defeat the Lakers and the refs. I’m not a Celtics fan but they should have won and it was devastating to watch them lose that way.

And in the 2002 WCF, don’t even get me started. The Lakers have received VERY suspicious and generous officiating for the past 15 years. A few titles they have won were directly tied to this questionable officiating. Tim Donaghy anyone?

I think the Super Bowl loss was the worst because of the type of season they had leading up to that game. I wasn’t surprised that they lost because I felt Seahawks or Niners were too physical for them, but if you are the Broncos or Bronco fan up until that point you had to think you were a really good team. Then you step on the field and get manhandled. To realize that everything you did all year long, you could not do in the biggest game of the year. Statistically you are probably the greatest offense ever, you own the ESPN highlights and then you get smacked in the face.

Don’t get me wrong. The soccer loss was horrible, but at least in soccer when you mess up or get stopped you are not getting hit by some 250+ lb guy and that was happening to the Broncos that whole night.

to me without a doubt it would be the world cup loss of brazil. all three scenarios were beat downs, but 2 of the 3 scenarios are anual events that each team has a chance of making. not only was this a once a 4 year event, it made it more rare that they were hosting it. and they got blown out at the first half. hell, i even heared that the germans spoke at half time and said lets not embarass the brazilians too much since its their home. its one thing to get beaten bad, its another to get beaten so bad that who youre playing with is taking pitty at you already.

Great topic. If you don’t follow soccer, then you don’t know +3 goals of difference is considered an outlier. A 7-1 score in a world cup finals is just the worst humiliation ever.
