In the recent years (2006-present), what were some of the worst draft decisions you’ve seen teams make

    some i think

Minnesota Trading rights to Brandon Roy for rights to Randy Foye

    Knicks drafting Balkman

Bobcats taking D.J. Augustine over Brook Lopez was a bad move to me with Felton on roster

Minnesotas Double PG dillemma this year was pretty bad also

Everyone loves Battiers game but was he really worth Rudy Gay?

Toronto Raptors select Joey Graham 1 pick before Danny Granger
Toronto Raptors select Rafael Aroujo 1 pick before Andre Iguodala
6 teams pass on Brandon Roy.

My Bulls drafting LaMarcus Aldridge then trading him to Portland for Blazer’s pick Tyrus Thomas and Viktor Khryapa… One bad move… Aldridge averaged more points than these two guys combined…

OJ Mayo and Kevin Love swap was bad for ‘sota… They could have had a go-to guy in terms of offense but instead they settled for an unathletic guy but has good hands and large frame…

As a Bobcat fan and Lopez fan, I wasn’t thrilled with the Augustin move, but at the time they only had ONE PG on the entire roster. DJ could still be good, and Felton is strong and athletic enough to steal some minutes at the 2 next to Augustin.

I gotta go with the Bobcats picking Adam Morrison at number 3 in 2006 when:

They already HAD a very good SF in Gerald Wallace. (As IF Morrison could possibly challenge him)
They needed a starting SG next to Felton and Brandon Roy was available.
Rudy Gay, athletic and long enough to possibly play 2 positions, was also available.

Some people expect to much to soon!!

The one guy slamming the T-Wolves for trading to get Kevin Love.Kevin Love had a solid rookie season and lead all rookies in rebounding and then Joe Alexander had some solid moments but admittedly was a little underwhelming!

People remember they were both rookies!Wait for like 3 or 4 years and/or for them to get solid playing time to condemn them.

Ballaj you can’t really blame the Trailblazers with choosing Oden over Durant. Like that is easy to say now, but back at the 2007 NBA Draft everyone knew that Oden was going to be a beast. Recently he hasn’t been able to pan out to that type of player that everyone wants to be. So I’m going to say thats just unfair right now. Greg Oden has the chance to be good but we’ll see about that.

Oden was also proven in college and was supposed to take the NBA by storm and so was Durant, but Oden was the more logical choice here. How many players come every so often to the NBA being compared to Bill Russell and having that Shaq kinda domination? They don’t come by a lot do they?

Some of these moves were not all that bad at the time. The Jason Richardson trade was a salary dump. With that said, he’s a good player, but he’s overpaid and he’s not going to win a championship.

Even though the Darko pick didn’t pan out, it’s hard to criticize the move considering they still won a championship. Also you have to consider that there were a lot of good veteran players ahead of him on the depth chart. Larry Brown tends not to play young guys anyways. We saw that even with the Olympic team a few years back. I do think the move slowed down what could have been a lot of long term success if they had picked one of the other guys afterwards. From my view, it seems like players that are drafted high get stuck on really good or championship contending teams right when they come into the league, have a hard time developing because either they don’t get the time or the opportunities to make mistakes like the guys that go straight to bad to ok teams.

The Tyrus Thomas move wasn’t that bad either. I think everyone saw him destroy Aldridge during the NCAA playoffs and the guy had (and still has) a ridiculous upside. I think if Tyrus doesn’t move past Aldridge in the next two years then he never will be better than him. I’m still not that sold on Aldridge either though. He’s a shooter for a big guy, but he does nothing on defense, is a horrible rebounder for his size and really doesn’t get in the lane and block shots. If he ever becomes an all star, it’s going to be a weak year in the west for 4s.

2006: The Warriors drafted Patrick O’Bryant and the use-to-be Sonivs drafted Saer Sene.
2007: The Suns drafted and traded away the 24th pick, Rudy Fernandez.
2008: The Bobcats drafted DJ Augustin, instead of Brook Lopez, and then drafted Alexis Ajinca, while DeAndre Jordan was still on the board.

      FT33,

Have you checked Augustin’s stats?? He had a good rookie seaon. I wasn’t a fan of the pick but the Lopez vs. Augustin debate might not be settled for a few years. Both could show us a lot in the future. Ajinca was selected as a longterm project. No guarantees that DeAndre Jordan will end up better than him.

I would have taken Lopez and Chalmers as the Bobcats, but only time will tell.

Renaldo Balkman and Mardy Collins in the 2006 draft for the Knicks was terrible, they couldve gotten both of them in either the mid-late 2nd round (Collins) or in the undrafted free agent pool (Balkman). Yet both went in the 1st round, smh….

I’m not saying that Augustin is a bad player. Both Lopez and Augustin are good players, but they really needed a center and you don’t get any better then Lopez. And as for DJ and Ajinca, when DJ started, he averaged 7.7ppg(not that good), 8.5rpg, and 2.5bpg, including a 23 points(10 dunks, 1 tip-in, and 1 post move attempt), 12 boards, and 4 blocks against the Lakers, and 8 points 20 boards against the Warriors.

FT33, the Bobcats didn’t need a Center in summer 2008. Emeka Okafor was a fine Center and will never be a PF. Emeka has Center weight, strength, wingspan, standing reach, shotblocking numbers, rebounding numbers, and FG%. If his head was an inch longer, we’d be talking about what a solid 6’11” Center he is. He was a poor man’s version of Ben Wallace-in-his-prime and just fine. Also, he’ll never be able to cover all of the mobile, perimeter-oriented 4’s throughout the league now. Now that he’ll be on TV more with the Hornets, fans will start to realize that instead of automatically assuming he is a PF because the top of his head reaches 6’10”.

I take it that your DJ statistics refer to DeAndre Jordan, not DJ Augustin. Nobody expected Ajinca to do anything this season. Anyone who knows him knows that he is a high-risk/high-reward longterm project. The Bobcats were playing to win–not develop projects on the court last season–and had him shipped out to the D-League. There were no minutes behind Diaw, Okafor, Mohammed, Juwan Howard, and Diop. As a Bobcat fan, I’m not losing sleep over DeAndre Jordan quite yet.

And besides, DeAndre had a lot of red flags around draft time. He looked untalented in the workout footage I saw. Didn’t he end up as a second-stringer at Texas A&M? I can forgive teams for passing on him. If he truly pans out, it will be one of those “hindsight is 20/20” situations.

Even if they didn’t need a center, they needed another low post player that can help Okafor in the post, offense and defense. And for DeAndre’s sake, he is just as much as a project as Ajinca but without the risk and the reason he got all of that playing time was because of injuries that inflicted Kaman, Randolph, and Camby.

De Jordan was considered a big risk around draft time who should have stayed in school. I remember being privy to this general attitude and quite agreeing with it.

I think DeAndre did produced better numbers than Ajinca last year… Remember the game when he grabbed 20 rebounds? and to think it was just his 4th game in his career… He did had the 23 and 12 game against the Lakers all of which were dunks… But most of you are right, he should have stayed in school… He could have been a top 2 pick in the 2009 Draft instead of…gulp… Thabeet…

Yea. If DJ stayed at school, and had a VERY big year, they would probably questioned who will be the first pick, Griffin or DJ.

I think it was Brook Lopez’ fault that’s why he wasn’t drafted by the Bobcats… The Bobcats did take a look at him and were very much interested. The thing was, Lopez already believed that he would be taken top 5 in the draft so he instead rejected the invitation the Bobcats had for him. I think the Bobcats may have felt dismayed or insulted so instead when Lopez was still available at the 9th pick, they snubbed him and took Augustin instead.

Imagine the Clippers getting 2 best young players on 2008 and 2009… I mean, should DeAndre had gone in the 2009 Draft, he could have been the 1st or 2nd pick… Now, the Clippers have 2 big men that they can build on… Yikes! Kinda scary to look at in the future…

I think DJ Augistine is a terrific player. For a point guard he is a lights out shooter, and doesn’t need much space to get off a jump shot, but I think there is a 0% chance if he stayed another year at Texas that he would have gone #1 over Blake Griffin. Let’s not forget he is 5’10” without shoes and no one is going to pick a 5’10” point guard over a 6’10” prototypical power forward with the #1 pick. That being said he could have gone top 5 because he is a great talent, and size isn’t everything, but if you have the #1 pick 5’10” is just too risky.

hah,Oh man, That is very tempting scenario, but I’d want them to hang on to Noah if that happened. I like the way he is active getting loose balls and he can run the court I think if he worked on his junk mechanics he could play PF too or just be the best backup C in the league. Jordan is a more tempting prospect at center though, I think he could be just as good if not better than Greg Oden. I’d be a happy Bulls fan, but I’d need Noah as an insurance policy

Damn Right when you said tempting… TEEEEEMPTING!… If Noah stays, he can be an energy guy off the bench… Sorta like Varejao without the flop crap… I wish the Bulls can pull off a move like that but it’s unlikely for now… But he is DEFINITELY a prospect that I will keep my eyes on… He looks like a steal at 35 in the 2008 Draft…

I agree, He really came on strong at the end of last year, and he plays for the Clippers, they are so inept front office wise they could very realistically get rid of him for way less than he is worth. haha. Yeah, I think they should purse Bosh this summer too, unless Thomas absolutely blows up. But its been tough being a Chicago fan when it comes to pulling in FA’s. I remember McGrady, Garnett, Kobe, all those guy were supposed to be lured to Chicago in off seasons past. Oh, well, lets keep our fingers crossed.

Just what I had in mind Joe… Being the Clippers that they are… They could let go DeAndre for a bowl of popcorn… It could end up much worse than drafting Olowokandi last 1998…LOL… Yeah… It’s been frustrating for the Bulls but the best thing happened when we got Rose with just 1.7 chance of landing him right? That’s not luck my man… I think it’s more than that…^^

Well done man, I agree, but damn, it makes me kind of sad to hear it broken down like that, haha. Honestly, I was really big on Curry early on, but I was furious they traded Brand for Chandler. I really wanted to see a Curry Brand C/PF combo, but you nailed it about Curry’s development. By the time he went to New York I was ecstatic to have him gone. What do you think about this year? I really like James Johnson, but I’m not big on Gibson at all for that high of a pick. I’d be down if they took him in the 35-40 range, but I was hoping they’d take Tony Douglas or Budinger to give them a little more depth off the bench with Gordon gone.

I thought James Johnson would be another Fizer but when I watched him in Summer League, I knew he had skills… He can defnitely contribute to the Bulls but nothing special will happen from him. He is a skilled combo forward PERIOD. The Gibson pick was a shock to me. I thought they’d take Blair… But we’ll see… I like his wingspan and OJ Mayo who was his teammate at USC was high on him… We’ll see… But the Bulls could have drafted Ellingon, Budinger o Blair in that spot where they were petty much available…

Yeah, one positive about Gibson is his shot blocking, The Bulls could easily have one of the top shot blocking front courts in the league this year. He needs to bulk up, and drafting two forwards could mean they are planning on shopping Thomas again this year.

I guess so… They shouldn’t have traded Aldridge in the first place… He could have provided the post offense they badly needed since Curry left the team…Tyrus is a pogo-stick leaper but the thing is, he is very inconsistent and he doesn’t seem to have an offensive game as of now, though he did have little improvement on his jumpshot quite a bit… He does tease us with his talent and potential but it does show on and off… I’m OK on trading Tyrus just as long as its a very reasonable player… (Please not Boozer)

for one i also said draft durant over oden..i liked oden but i thought durant was special even though people said guys like him come along more often..i never thought oden had shaq domination. i did think hed be a good rebounder and score a lil more in his prime then mutombo. emaka can check poward fowards..hes alot quicker then you are giving him credit for. he played alot of pf when they started that big euro guy as well as when they would go wit the big line up and he did just fine. but since hes also good at center and its hard to find centers who can score rebound in double figures night in and night out, then thats the position he plays. its also easy in hindsight to say a trade is bad..at the time when roy was traded for foye and aldrige was traded for tyrus there wasnt much of a fuss if any
