TarHeelRavenParticipantDid anybody see the Brazil -Croatia world cup game? The dive that the Brazil guy had in the box was one of, if not the worst dives I have ever seen. He wasn’t even touched and the ref fell for it. Some of the worst floppers in the NBA even cringed on that call. Not naming any names, you guys know who they are….

LitteringAnd…ParticipantI watch a great deal of football and that doesn’t crack the top 20 of "worst dives" I’ve seen. Soft as butter penalty though, a pity as Brazil were the better side and it’s always a shame to see controversy added to what would have been a good win. Croatia played well though, I think they’ll get out of the group ahead of Mexico and Cameroon.

TenSecondTomParticipantBrazil was terrible home versus a country 40 times smaller than them without 2 of their 11 starters (suspended) and 1 backup that would’ve started in place of one of those suspended players. The refs gave Brazil the game it was 1-1 when that bad penalty was called which made it 2-1. Then croatia scores another goal and the same ref disallowes it on a phantom penalty on the GK. The keeper initiated the contact and Olic went straight up it was clean. The third goal was irrelevant because at that point it was 2-1 Brazil late when if they game was called properly it could’ve been 2-1 Croatia so Croatia was playing ultra-offensive and got caught on the counter-attack (also anothe 50-50 ball that should’ve stopped played but didn’t get called). Not only did Croatia get officiated out of the biggest possible upset in Wold Cup History and at worst a tie, they are now -2 in goal differential and I would put my money on it that they lose the tiebreaker to Cameroon or Mexico from GD. So yes, this was one of the biggest blunders in recent World Cup History. 21-5 on the foul calls too; it was looking like an NBA playoff game with the officiating inequality.

Hector_Reyes_8ParticipantOR it was tonight with the same exact thing applying to the Spurs. Heard it here first!

LitteringAnd…ParticipantWhile I agree with a fair bit of your sentiment, a few things:
The penalty was a shocker for sure, but the Olic foul on the GK was not as clear – I’ve seen that go either way a lot and my first instinct was it was foul, the arm over the shoulder is pretty clear by the letter of the law.
It was not "one of the biggest world cup blunders in recent history". Games with this level of controversy are quite common in world football.
It would have been several country miles from being "the biggest possible upset in world cup history" – seriously? I’ve watched 3 world cups now and this was nothing. Croatia are a GOOD team (top 20 fifa ranking consistently), them beating brazil would be the equavalent of Charlotte or New York beat the Spurs in a single game. Try 2002 – Sth Korea beating Italy in the round of 16 and then getting to the semis; try Australia getting out of its 2006 group; try the US beating Portugal in 2002.
I’m not trying to be mean or call you out, but I just wanted to point out you kind of got a bit caried away with some hyperboles there 😛 Also having watched it, Brazil were the better team this morning, comfortably. I thought Croatia had a good plan to sit back, absorb pressure and hit Brazil on the counter when their full-backs over commit (not to mention Luiz propensity to decide he’s Yaya Toure and go walk-about every now and then). But their discipline after scoring the first goal was poor, they loosened up and for the rest of the match allowed Neymar and Oscar too much time on the ball in between their lines.

frogmanParticipantUnfortunately there have been much worse than that. Can’t believe they used that referee for a Brazil game though. Not big enough for the occasion, if that was up the other end, no way Croatia gets the call. They need the big European refs for the Brazil games.

TenSecondTomParticipantIt WOULD have been one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history considering no host team has ever lost the opening match and Brazil is the most historic team in regards to the World Cup; they are the only country to have participated in all 20 World Cups and have won 5 of them. Like you have mentioned, Usa beating Portugal, Korea beating Italy, etc. Are all comparable and happen at least once a tournament but this would’ve be unprecedented and it is clear that the refs deprived Croatia at least the chance to make that happen and also deprived them of the tie that they deserved. They didn’t play better than Brazil, but Brazil played extremely sloppy and Croatia executed on most of their little amount of changes while Brazil could not get it together until the refs put it on a platter for them.

King CaluchaParticipantBtw, that croatian goal was correctly disallowed. That small area around the goal is like a restricted area, the goalkeeper cannot be touched there.
About the penalty kick. The striker was touched but there wasn’t enough contact to fall.. so it definitely was a flop. In soccer referees are encouraged not to make those calls when in doubt. Unluckily for the croatians, that didn’t happen today. The game could have ended with a draw. Turrible referee.

OhCanada-ParticipantA missed penalty kick on the Brazilian team in Brazil is a death wish for that officiating crew. Its not like the NBA. These guys will riot after every game win or lose. If they miss that call and they lose the rioters will go nutso.

gabriel_akvaParticipantIt’s not penalty. It’s a consensus, even here in Brasil. But, as a Brazilian, I must say that if the the penalty were not called, we’ll still win that match. And about the call on contact between Olic and Julio César, it’s CLEARLY a foul on the goalkeeper.
Ps: i loved when the whole crowd said "Hey, Dilma, vai tomar no cu!", translating "Hey, Dilma, go fuck yourself!" Hahahahaha
