I just was fooling around on tankathon. When I simmed the lottery, Philly got the 4th pick, and that got me thinking …

What is the worst case scenario for Philly after all this tanking?

I like Embiid and Okafor a lot, but I’m not sure anyone else is a multiple time all-star. And I’m not sure they can play those two together.

Since this is a ‘worst case scenario,’ let’s assume the worst:

    Embiid can’t stay healthy.

Okafor ends up being something between an Eddy Curry and Al Jefferson.

Noel is something between Tyson Chandler and Tyrus Thomas.

Saric struggles with the transition to the NBA and becomes a starter/rotation player in the mold of Chandler Parson/Jeff Green.

Covington never figures out how to be efficient or play within a normal offense.

Grant becomes Al Farouq Aminu as he learns how to shoot the three a bit

They get the 4th pick this year, and draft Dunn to run the team, who ends up being a solid starting point guard, but in a point guard heavy league, is not in the top 15 point guards in the league.

They trade Noel for a good starting wing plus a midround draft pick.

    They are left with:

    All-star Center

    Rotation/Starting Swing Forward

    Inefficient Wing Shooter

    Starting two-way guard/fringe all-star

    Starting point guard

    Aminu Clone

    IR Embiid

Is that really worth three years of tanking? Can that be a championship team? Is that any different that the Charlette Hornets are today?

    Jefferson-Okafor

    Zeller-Saric

    MKG-Covington

    Batum-Noel trade for guard

    Walker-Dunn?

Are the Hornets a Championship team?

I like Colangelo a lot. With their assets it seems like they can, even in the worst case scenario, build a team that is a top 4 team in the East.

What do you think is a team today that is the worst case scenario for the Sixers? Best-case scenario?

Worst case scenario is this tanking/pruging era doesn’t lead them anywhere near the playoffs, they become one the leagues biggest laughing stock up there with Sacramento. Good free agents have no interest in signing with Philly, fan attenednce plumets and the city turns their back on the organization, lose money on their next local TV deal. They will be a hole so deep they could miss the playoffs for over a span of another 15 years, and hole so deep that the only thing that can salvage them is the luck/chance they draft a superstar of the caliber of Lebron, Durant, Curry, Kobe.

Philly’s philosphe of tanking was to land a superstar like Towns, but in doing so they’ve become relient on aquring one to have success. They’ve basically left themselves with no margin for error now, making rebuilding a quality team all that much more unecessarily harder than it could be.

That would be pretty bad. But I will go not best case or worst case somewher in the middle to what I think will happen.

    PF/C

Embid plays next year. Flashes of brilliance but loses a step/explosivness due to injuries. Decent Rookie year 14 pts 7 red and 1blk. Keep Noel for defense and while Embid plays the year out. Saric could still even flop when he plays. Prbly a decent shooting big not much else, 12pts 4 reb. Sign another veteran to start at one of C or PF

Trade Okafor for which ever guard they like in the draft Murray, Dunn, Hield. Prbly to Boston. Or trade for Marcus Smart to shore up defense. I will be surprised if they trade Noel Instead. I just think Noel impacts the game more on D letting Embid and the SF below impact the game scoring.

     SF
The odds are with them after 3 years of flopping they will prbly land Simmons or Ingram. Rookie of the year Candidate.

Lakers prbly get Ingram or Simmons and keep their pick.

    PG/SG

Dunn starts the year behind Ish after given a 3 year deal. Eventually becomes starter. 10pts 6 ast

End the year as either last or second to last. But with at least some excitment and flashing potential. Decide who to keep around this years pick of Ingram or Simmons. Will need to see who gels together with their pick from this year.

Worst case. Embid never plays. Knock on wood I really want him too. Get 4th pick Dunn. He flops and 5th pick Bender becomes star. Trade Okafor for Smart and Smart never pans out as starter while Okafor avgs 20 and 10. Saric Flops and isn’t even a roll player. Noel can’t ever get over 10 pts a game and doesn’t become any better on D.

     Best case scenario

Joel Embiid comes back healthy and develops into the best C in the league and Hall of famer.

Okafor Slim’s down some more tightens up his ball handling and adds range to his jumper allowing him to play at PF.

Nerlens Noel is traded for more assets or developing prospects or a starting SG that can knockdown shots and defend well.

76ers win the lottery drafting Simmons and he develops a consistent jumpshot allowing him to dominate as a point forward and a Top 5 player in the league.

Lakers fall out of the Top 3 and hand the 4th pick to Philly. They select Jamaal Murray who settles into a Chauncey Billups type role as a clutch shooter and guy that can really fit in.

Saric develops a consistent jumper and is fine coming off the bench as an ideal 3/4.

Philly becomes a dynasty and wins championships.

Not likely but just saying they are more likely to fall somewhere in the middle of the two predictions which would justify the tanking.

Sixers have 2 or 3 First round picks in Each of the Next 4 Drafts…… But let’s play Devils Advocate & say that Embiid, Saric, Noel & Okafor all Retire tomorrow…….. & let’s assume Phila Does Not get the Lakers pick This year…….

The Sixers STILL have 3 – 1st round picks this year (1 Lottery pick) in the 2016 Draft…….

They have 3 – 1st round picks next year (let’s assume the Lakers pick converts in 2017 – top 3 protected again) & the Also have another pick swap option w/ Sacramento……. so that is 2 more Lottery picks & a later 1st round pick for 3 total in the 2017 Draft……

They have 2 – 1st picks in the 2018 Draft…….. And they have 2 -1st round picks in the 2019 Draft & the other pick is Sacramento…… Boogie Cousins looks like he might leave after 2018……. So in 2019 Phila would have their Own 1st round pick ……. AND Sacramento’s 1st round pick……. Which if Cousins Leaves will Def be a Lottery & could be #1 Overall……

Now w/ Bryan Colangelo there now he may Totally blow All that up…… & I think Colangelo is the Sixers Bigger problem…… Think about this, Analytics in All forms of NBA Management has REALLY taken off the last 3 or 4 years …….. & in that time NO ONE would give Colangelo even an Asst GM job,.,,,,,,,,

This guy was Literally left behind as a Dinosaur of Old NBA Executive Thinking…… Luv or Hate Hinkie……. No One denies he built a kind of Analytics / Sports Science Mecca behind the scenes in Phila that was attracting ALL kinds of You Egg Head talent from MIT, Standford, etc……

Reports out of Phila late Sunday night were that a Massive Brain Drain was about to occur as Multiple Hinkie placed Analytics specialists in various Layers of managment & scouting were Resigning first thing Monday morning………. I believe THIS is Phila’s Real Issue……

     Worst case.

    Noel and Okafor to jail.

    Saric never arrives.

They draft Bender, he stays in Europe with Saric.  This after moving down after the lotto, and also not getting the Lakers pick.

They replace their management with an old Phoenix guy and his son.

Kobe Bryant wants to play a year in Philadelphia, they use all their salary cap room on him, and give him two more years at player options.

Embiid injures himself again, and buys a house next to Greg Oden and never plays basketball again.

They don’t give Ish Smith a new contract because they are $100,000 apart in negotiations.

They keep the same worthless coach, instead of getting someone who can teach and develop and keep them under control.

Best case.  Simmons, Durant, Kobe at vet minimum, Coach Thibodeau, Kevin Love arrives in a trade for Embiid, and Embiid announces his retirement when he arrives in Cleveland.

Billy King is rehired and he rehires Sam Hinkie.

Seriously though they miss out on Simmons or Ingram, Saric stays abroad, the big front men remain injury prone.

Best case – Ingram this year, Josh Jackson next. Build their team around them on the perimeter, with a healthy Embiid + Okafor + Noel in the middle and depth with Saric + Grant + other rookies as they develop (maybe grab GP3 in the draft) and attract an all-star calliber PG in FA. Then they start to develop and win games and off depth, which is still underrated in this league.

Worst case – whoever  they draft is a bust, Okafor wants out, Embiid never gets healthy, Noel never learns how to put the ball in the bucket, Saric comes over and doesnt want any part of the sixers, Cannan plays the rest of his career for the team.
