This site has had a lot of mixed opinions when it comes to willie cauley stein..

What do you think his NBA potential is? Who does he remind you of? What kind of impact will he have on a team next season if he decides to declare?

Cauley-stein is one of my favorite players to watch in college this year because of his raw athleticism and motor. I had heard nothing about him intell the season started and even coach cal is on record saying he though cauley-stein would be around for a couple of years but now he doesn’t know..I hear the argument that his body isn’t nba ready but he doesn’t play like he’s scared of contact. We all probably know about his football career..anyway he reminds me a lot of javelle McGee (with a little bit more of a bball iq…even at this stage of his career) I think OKC would be a great fit and I think he could possibly get meaningful minutes early. The thunder do play thabeet in their rotation so it’s not that far of a stretch.

He reminds me of javale McGee but he is not ready to step in and contribute in his early years, so he’s not a good fit for OKC. I think he’s a boom or bust prospect, but his potential and athletic ability for a seven footer is unreal.

My opinion is his ceiling is Tyson Chandler and worst case would be Ryan Hollins. I really don’t think he will make much impact his first year in the league. Really i would like to see what he could do if he comes back, but when your slated to go top 10-15 and with the crew Cal has coming in he probably ought to go.

Reminds me of an 18 or 19 year old K-Mart, but about 2 inches taller. Martin put a lot of work into his game, I don’t know if WCS will do the same, but they play the exact same way at that stage of their careers.

I’ve watched all of WCS’s games being a UK fan…

He’s really not a dominating shot blocker like you would think or a great rebounder… His vertical leap is actually overrated as well although still pretty solid…Offensively he shows some pretty good footwork but still lacks a soft shooting touch…

To me His NBA potential is based solely on his speed for a 7 footer which is world class, looks like Tyson Chandler but still needs to work on rebounding and defensive positioning…I hope he comes back to work on his weaknesses cause I think he will be a D leaguer for a couple years if he leaves now, but really you never know, its possible his stock may not get any higher than it is now…

I agree with mostly everything you said. He’s more of a fluid, mobile athlete than an explosive one.
His instincts aren’t great at all which is understandable given his relative newness to the game.
If he declares, whoever drafts him will basically be drafting a blank slate but he does have good tools to work with. Given his ability to move his feet he could at least be a solid help defender if he picks up the rotations.

Yeah, His speed and agility are off the charts for a 7 footer but he’s not great at any 1 particular thing on the court…

Coach Cal said in HS he wanted to play everything EXCEPT Basketball which makes you wonder how much passion he would have for it after becoming a millionaire…he plays hard so maybe that won’t be an issue…

Its tricky for me to project how he will be at the next level…not sure how he would fit in unless he becomes an aggressive rebounder and defender.

He is averaging about 2 blocks per 20 minutes a game. That is effective. Too bad he didnt grow up focusing exclusively on Bbball, dude played everything else. Getting him back for another year will be as big for UK as getting Wiggs or Randle.
