He is probably the only filipino that actually has a chance to make it to the NBA in the past 20 years. You guys think there will ever be a filipino in the NBA?

He’s the best chance we have and here’s why:

In the Philippines, when you grow up to be 6’2-6’3 above, immediately and I mean immediately, you will be forced to play big. You are trained to get those rebounds and outlet it to the guards. You are trained to set screens and roll. You’re ball-handling skills are then lost in the shuffle.

The best thing to happen to Kobe is to move to the States. At high school in the Philippines, he was already about 6’2 and was already being converted to be a big man. That does not bode well for his development.

Yes, he sometimes can still have freedom to handle the ball, but I;m sure some of you who play bll understand the handling the ball as a big rather than as a guard is a waaaaayyy different feeling. Especially in high school ball. As a guards, you attack from the wings rather than from the middle where the whole defense will collapse on you. Also as a guard, you will have those screens set for you. You can be a big handling the ball, but you can almost assure guards will scream for the ball from you which leads to the defense pressuring hard and you picking up the ball.

In the States, he is 6’5 and he is being trained to be a wing, which is great. He is not the tallest player on the floor and he won’t be forced to play big. I can tell you right now that he is only one of 2 Filipino players 6’5 and above who has decent ball-handling skills. This may sound cliche but if he really works hard enough both in his game and his body, he MIGHT have a chance to make it to the pros.

Paras never struck me as an NBA type of prospect.  I wish him the best though, it would be great if he made it.

    Deep(ish) Thoughts

Him and Mo Watson should be fun to watch and then if he stays he will play with Kaleb Joseph. So he he the PG’s to play with. He has to take advantage of being at a smaller school opposed to UCLA

It’s hard to call Creighton a small school when they’re in the Big East now.

I just can’t see any Phillipino player ever making the NBA as much as they love the sport there.  They are just so physically underdeveloped.  When I was holidaying there I was head and shoulders above everyone else and I’m only 6 foot 1.  Good to see one just playing minutes in the NCAA.

As someone who is half-asian, the lack of Asians in the league is frustrating. I got exicted when I heard about Rui Hachimura, a top-tier prospect heading to Gonzaga. But with an African-American father, his Asian descent is not easy to notice.

He’s definitely still an Asian male, who I’ll be rooting for regardless of his race, but I don’t think he’ll set a precedent or break stereotypes if he ever plays in the NBA. Not in the way Jeremy Lin, even though he grew up in the US.

All the best to Kobe Paras. It would mean a lot to many if he made the league.
