John Wall hasn’t become a superstar yet because he has to improve his jumpshot. I’m well aware that has improved 7.1 percent this past season. If wants superstar status he has to get the jumpshot down, it’s the one thing keeping him from the best PG in the league hands down..

Watch him this year. He’s gonna make the leap to top 3 PG status this year

There are just too many good PGs for him to reach superstar status. Kyrie Irving will be a winning team. Damian Lillard is getting better. Rose looks very good on Team USA and his Bulls will be a winning team.

I see Wall solidifying himself as a legit star. But I don’t see him being considered better than CP3, Westbrook, Rose or Curry. And even though the Wizards should have a good record this season, guys like Tony Parker and Kyrie Irving will be on better teams, winning more games. And don’t sleep on the Raptors making a leap in the win column and much of the credit going to Kyle Lowry.

John Wall has IMO fulfilled what coul reasonably be expected of him on his rookie deal and cracked All Star level last season. PG’s in the NBA are currently very deep and to compare his output this coming year to say Kyrie would be difficult as they are playing in different situations. Also PG’s vary so much from pass first to the more scoring type of PG which seems to be almost the new breed.

Also PG’s evolve in their career, look at Nash a double MVP in his early 30’s, J-Kidd still a double double machine well into his mid 30’s. Players like CP3 are perhaps still evolving as they play in different situations and their basketball IQ increases even more. Hopefully we get a fit D-Rose back this season too.

It’s not only his jumper, he has to improve on decision making especially in half court settings to become a top 5 point guard. He has a shot anyway, while he still has a lot to learn he’s improved significantly in the last few years.

I think Wall can be a star, but I don’t think he’ll ever be a SUPERSTAR on the level of a Durant or Lebron.  As Jester said he really needs to improve his half court offense.  We all know how electric he is in the open court.  Also that mid-range jumper needs a lot of work.  Against the Pacers, they were practically leaving him wide open and Wall was so hesitant to pull the trigger on that 15 footer.  He needs to have confidence to take and make that shot to keep the defense honest which will open up more driving lanes for him.

I don’t think he has the scoring mentality or capabilities to be a true superstar. Luckily he has Bradley Beal and a great surrounding cast. He is still a great lead guard who has great size and athleticism. He is already a good passer and defender but these are the two areas I think he should be focusing on to really improve. Washington could be a real contender if Wall improves his decision making and knowing when to facilitate and when to score. I would also like to see him pick up the intensity on the defensive end of the court. His shooting will improve over time, he can do things athletically that few can do, great assist numbers, good size…… I didn’t like him before the draft and early in his career but I think he his definetly overlooked when debating the top point guards in the league.

i honestly think John Wall is who he is at this point. This will be his 5th year I believe he’ll be 24 by the time the season starts. Currently he’s no better than Lillard and Lillard is only 2months older thanWall. We’ve all been waiting for Wall to climb into that top 5 point guard spot but its just to damn hard! I don’t think he’ll ever be a superstar. He has to be able to get ahead of Lillard before we start to have Superstar convos about Wall.

John Wall is all ready better than Lillard. The only thing Lillard does better than John Wall is shooting the ball and that’s it.

Wall plays in an easier conference and the best point guard in his conference that he’s played against is between Jeff Teague and Kyle Lowry. His team has also won less games than Lillards. His stats may say he’s better but if you ha dto pick one guy to lead your team night in and night out I have a hard time believing that you’d pick Wall over Lillard especially if the majoruty of those games were close.

Wait why is does it seem like everyone is saying that Lillard is better then Wall? Let’s compare their stat line

          Lillard-20.7 PPG, 5.6 APG, 3.5 RPG, 42% Field goal %, 0.8 steals, 0.3 blocks

          Wall   -19.9 PPG, 8.8 APG, 4.1 RPG, 4% Field goal %,  1.8 steals, 0.3 blocks

Yeah the T-Blazers were better, but Wall isn’t playing with any one on Lamarcus Aldridges level.

If I had to choose between these 2 as my PG of the future I’m taking Wall.

Aldridge is a great player no doubt. But when the Games on the Line who you looking at to make the shots? Nobody watching Game 6 against Houston thought Lillard was missing that shot. Wall misses that shot and that’s not the only clutch shot Lillard made that season. Although the stats are similar you just know you can count on Lillard Wall is still up in the air. He kind of faded against Indy which was a winnable series.

..Um, are you saying you will take Lillard over Wall due to his recent display of clutch baskets?

Because Wall is superior in almost every category. I dont even think there should be a discussion on who’s better between the two.

They are different players, Lillard is a much better shooter and shot creator, a better decision maker. Wall is a lot more athletic, can push the fast break like no one else, but he struggles against good defense in half court setting, takes too many mid range jumpers and he’s not that good at them. His so so jumper hurts his off the dribble game. Lillard destroyed Houston in a very close series, while Wall struggled a lot against Indiana. Lillard is way more mature as a player. All of this doesn’t mean ruling Wall out, he has ton of potential, he’s a much better athete and might become better than Lillard as he’s been constantly improving over last 2 years. But at this point Lillard has proven that he can be the leader of a legit playoff team in the post season. You can’t say the same for Wall, not yet.

Honestly, it’s not because of his lack of jump shooting but it’s his ability to create shots and finish at the rim (or lack thereof) like some of the elite PGs right now. You look at Westbrook and Rose, they both have more effective pull up jumpers than Wall but by no means do they have the best jumpshots in the world yet they remain effective because they can get to the rack at will and finish almost each time or at least create for others. Wall, on the other hand, has yet to master finishing at the rim. He does not have a floater to finish over the big man, he doesn’t have those crazy acorbatic layups that Rose seems to do in his sleep and he doesn’t have the strength and power of Russell to put people in posters when he wants to. With that said, I think this guy has the highest upside in the current NBA point guards (save maybe when Emmanuel declares) he’s long, athletic, blazing speed and quickness and he’s actually a true point guard. He just needs to know how to use these athletic gifts and remain under control.

Wall last year shot 60% at the rim, which is definitely above league average and definitely impressive for a point guard. He made almost 50% of his attempts on drives (which is not great, but kinda good), per sport vu data available on Nba.com, while Westbrook had a terrible 39% FG on drives. It’s true that poor shot selection hurt Westbrook’s %s, but still, there’s a huge difference and nothing suggest Wall is a poor finisher or struggles near to the rim. On the other hand, Wall took tons of pull up jumpers (8.9) and made just 34% of them, 27.7% on 3 point pull ups, for an effective field goal % of 37. Westbrook took more or less the same amount of pull up jumpers, but he was slighlty more accurate on them, converting 38% of his attempts, 33% on 3 pointers, with a 44.5% EFG. Now shot selection is still an issue here, also considering that many guard Wall with a cushion to force him to attempt jumpers, especially mid rangers (some teams do the same once in a while with Westbrook, but not nearly as much), so the quality of his pull up jumpers is usually better, since Westbrook takes a lot of ill advised shots off the dribble.

So yes, jump shot is an issue for Wall while his finishing ability is not. If any, improving his jumper will force opponents to stay closer when guarding him, allowing him to get to the rim more easily, thus getting easier looks and improving his efficiency close to the basket.

depends what you consider a superstar. will he ever be a top 10 player? it’s possible. top 5 is doubtful. top 3 is next to impossible. imo, the best point guard in the league in say 5 years is a crap shoot, but after that, a new wave not even in the league yet will be there.
