Lotto StudParticipantOne player that I actually thought would become a 1st round pick when he stepped foot on college was J.R. Giddens. I thought by him being at Kansas he would shine but only with a short stint there he transferred to New Mexico where he played even better. I just would like to know why did Boston, out of all teams take a gamble on him in the 1st round. It is not like he got off the bench & was a productive spark for them, honestly it was a waste of a pick for them, because he is not even in the NBA anymore. Where is he?
Who is your…….Why was __________ a 1st Round pick?

IknoBall12Participantwhay was renaldo balkman a 1st round pick? i mean he was really a tweener becuz he played pf and center in college. yet in the nba he was a 3 that couldnt shoot worth a lick. all he was good for was running the break and MAYBE being a weakside defender.what did the knicks possibly see in him

natedogggParticipantwhy was DANIEL ORTON a first round pick?
id be suprised if he ever sees the NBA court.
0 - Posted on: Tue, 02/01/2011 - 4:10pm #481669
BigDParticipantDaniel Orton was taken in the first round because of his upside, Orlando didn’t think they had a need so they went for the upside he had.

apb540ParticipantHaha I feel for ya man. As a Sixers fan I was all about Josh Smith when you guys were on the clock cuz I assumed that you were gonna take Iggy. I was scared out of my mind that the Sixers were gonna take Aroujo.
0 - Posted on: Tue, 02/01/2011 - 5:12pm #481689

dmo21ParticipantI just don’t understand why!!! They needed both a center and a small forward, or pretty much bpa. They could of had Iggy, Biedreins, Jefferson, Josh Smith, JR Smith, or just anyobdy other than Haffa…. Even the draft when they picked Charlie V and Joey Grahaam in the first round was better than this… maybe, both are horrible.

TRC1991Participantwhy was troy bell a 1st round pick? he was a 6’1” shooting guard who was turnover prone and had a quick-trigger
0 - Posted on: Tue, 02/01/2011 - 5:19pm #481696

JoeWolf1^ Dude, I remember that. He was such a freak athlete he tricked them…but being a freak athlete doesn’t really matter when, like you mentioned, you’re a 6’1” turnover prone chucker 2 guard.

R-Dot-13Participantdmo hit it..
Rafael Aroujo..
0 - Posted on: Tue, 02/01/2011 - 5:20pm #481699

R-Dot-13ParticipantBack to back drafts the Raptors missed out on all star caliber players, it kills me, expecailly because of how horrible they are now.
0 - Posted on: Tue, 02/01/2011 - 5:23pm #481700

apb540ParticipantBad drafting kills teams and players careers (eg. Iverson). If they would of gone Bosh-Iggy in back to back drafts then who knows how that could of turned out.
0 - Posted on: Tue, 02/01/2011 - 5:28pm #481706

JoeWolf1Mohammad Sene was the worst 1st round pick I can remember in quite some time. Guys like that you pick up in the mid – late 2nd and hope they develop overseas.
0 - Posted on: Tue, 02/01/2011 - 5:38pm #481708

dmo21ParticipantIf I was the raptor gm for those two years, i would have done this.. Drafted Iggy in 2004, and then Bynum and Granger in 2005. In 2004 their starting lineup would have been: Alston. Carter, Iggy, Marshall, and Bosh. In 2005 after Carter was traded and other guys left, the lineup would have been Calder/James, Iggy, Granger, Bosh, and Bynum.. Playoffs anybody?
0 - Posted on: Tue, 02/01/2011 - 5:58pm #481714

Da1potParticipantHilton Armstrong and Josh Boone didn’t impress me in college at all yet they were both somehow first rounders…. Boone is out of the league and Armstrong is currently in the running for the coveted "Worst Player in the NBA Award."

thaprodigyParticipantJoseph Forte and Kedrick Brown
0 - Posted on: Tue, 02/01/2011 - 6:29pm #481730

dmo21ParticipantYeah, I know, another raptor, but they made soooo many bad picks that it is inevitable. So how about the one they call Aussie Shaq, yes the first Aboriginal Australian NBA player, the one we all know for… well nothing… Yes! I am talking about Nathan Jawaii!!!! We swapped picks with Indiana and they chose Hibbert and we chose Jawaii. These picks were back to back(i think). Damn, these Toronto GM’s are awesome!
0 - Posted on: Tue, 02/01/2011 - 6:44pm #481736
BigDParticipantJawai was a mid 2nd round draft pick. He was just simply too raw, and watching him heaps here in Australia he lacked any offensive moves, just basically brute strength and athletiscm.
0 - Posted on: Tue, 02/01/2011 - 7:03pm #481748

dmo21ParticipantI should have checked my stuff before posting. I guess my point was, that the Raptors could of had Hibbert, but added that pick in the trade for Jermaine.. Now look which center is better..

apb540ParticipantI gotcha. Shitty move regardless of the round
0 - Posted on: Tue, 02/01/2011 - 7:28pm #481758

Counting StarsParticipantIt’s a bit early, but I’m not sold on Christian Eyenga.
Yaroslav Korolev, Pavel Podkolzine and Patrick O’Bryant who was picked before Mahoumed Sene.
0 - Posted on: Tue, 02/01/2011 - 8:01pm #481765

Mr. 19134ParticipantThe Korolev pick baffled me as somebody who always follow Clipper picks because they’re so fun and they’re rookie usually always play.
But the raptors do suck at drafting they are really bad. Even the one they got right they got wrong who wouldn’t of wanted Wade over Bosh and teamed with Vince Carter who was still in his prime maybe he doesn’t gotta get traded. Now you got Carter and Wade and the next year ya probably have to pick Iggy or Josh Smith because you’re gonna be picking higher.

CodySLCParticipantI can think of a few. How about Joe Alexander and Acie Law.

projectpat310ParticipantLets see… The Sonics drafted Robert Swift, Johan Petro, and Saer Sene in three consecutive years. Each one made me think "WTF" more than the previous year. Great job Seattle.

johnecoParticipantIt’s 1999, the Knicks are picking 15th, the garden is buzzing because local star and top-10 projected Ron Artest hasn’t been picked yet, and the Knicks pick… Frederick Weiss. WTF? That was definitely the most shocking pick ever for me, because noone, noone, had ever heard of him. I mean he wasn’t even a standout player in Europe, and in fact he never became one, I doubt he ever averaged more than 5pts 5reb. In Europe. His most famous moment was tasting Vince Carter’s nuts as he jumped over him in the infamous "dunk of death".
You can’t really bring up Balkman. I mean, yea, noone projected him as a first round pick, but at least he’s still playing in the NBA. Plus he was the very last pick of the first round. Just being in the NBA is a success when you’re picked 30th…

mj23mj23besteverParticipanti was shocked when raf ar was picked and swift wow as all i can say about that with balkman like johneco said at least hes still in the nba and plays sum not totally terrible for a late 1st rounder
0 - Posted on: Wed, 02/02/2011 - 5:59am #481897

dmo21ParticipantI would have to disagree that picking Wade over Bosh would have been the right choice. The Raps already had Vince as their shooting guard and they guy who had the ball in his hands the most, we needed a big man so they chose Bosh, which I still think was the right decision. Just thank God Detroit picked Darko because the Raptors would have probably picked him..
0 - Posted on: Wed, 02/02/2011 - 7:08am #481914
Quincey HodgesFirst round pick…..Darko. Secound round pick…Dee Brown out of illinois
0 - Posted on: Wed, 02/02/2011 - 7:18am #481921

Mr. 19134ParticipantReally you would still pick Bosh over Wade? Even tho Wade can plat either guard position just as Vince Carter can play either wing position and both are very good passers. Wade at SG and Carter at SF, or Wade would be the PG like he was as a rookie and Carter the 2guard would be deadly. They would of went to the playoffs with Wade in his rookie year. They would of still been able to get a talent like Josh Smith or Al Jefferson in the draft the following year.
0 - Posted on: Wed, 02/02/2011 - 7:58am #481940

dmo21ParticipantThe Raptors had no low post presence at all. They needed a pf or center. Wade and Carter would have been to black holes on the offense, yes they probably would have won games, but back then, looking at the future picture, I still would have went big with Bosh as he is good and fit a better need. That year the 2nd and 3rd best players(who werent that good at all) were Alston and Jalen Rose, who were the point guard and small forward, so Wade would have pushed one of them out, which doesnt sound bad now, but back now you didnt know what Wade could be so why fix a position that isnt really broken?
0 - Posted on: Wed, 02/02/2011 - 8:07am #481943

Mr. 19134ParticipantBecause when you got the 4th pick you gotta go for BPA and Wade was coming off of a triple double in the Final Four, and put up legendary combine numbers, and this was before the influx of combine combo guard studs.
I for obvious reasons don’t knock the Bosh pick, and you are right that at the time the Raptors didn’t really even have a legitimate starter in the frontcourt on their roster.

Im Your FatherParticipantMr. 1934
Hindsight is 20-20, Wade was great at Marquette, but there were still a lot of questions about him. At the time I certainly didn’t think Wade was the best player available. Chris Bosh dropped 16 and 9 as a freshman and looked very much the part of a budding star.
0 - Posted on: Wed, 02/02/2011 - 9:40am #482011
Quincey Hodges^^^Agreeed. At the time Wade was good but Few thought he would be who he is today( and i don’t even know who those few are). Alot of peopel thought Bosh would end up like KG. Offensively he has done very well but he is no where near KG on the Defensive side

why was john bryant not a first round pick
0 - Posted on: Wed, 02/02/2011 - 5:33pm #482398

Afactor4ParticipantBefore people were wondering why Sheldon Williams went #5, now I’m wondering why he was drafted in the first round in the first place.
Saddest part is though, that just about all of the big men taken in that draft after Williams are out of the NBA or 12th men on their teams bench. (Boone, Simmons, Armstrong, Sene, Hollins, Powe, Paul Davis, etc). Oh and get this, Paul Millsap was taken after all these guys except Powe and Hollins in the mid 2nd round.

Jayhawks2011ParticipantNdudi Ebi
