They only get compared because their both Centers and their both from Africa.

Embiid is a back to the basket type of player and Thabeet never really had a polished offensive set rather than that he was way more of a faceup than Embiid.

Embiid has way better athleticism and is way more coordinated.

People are saying they hope he doesn’t turn out like Thabeet, but they aren’t comparing the two. Thabeet was a raw big man that was more defensive minded. Embiid is still raw but they are NOTHING alike offensively or defensively. Embiid has star potentil and Thabeet had bust written all over him.

Everyone should’ve known Thabeet was gonna bust when 6’6 DeJuan Blair and a vasty inferior Michigan ST team just destroyed him (most of his points in that FF game came running the floor, which was something he did REALLY well).

But Thabeet was NEVER a faceup big man. He could barely shoot inside of 3 ft, forget outside.

The sad part with this is most posters on this site said the exact same thing. I think 85% of the posters here would not have taken Thabeet at 2 and most said look at how he struggled with Blair.

         Exactly dude.

Makes me wonder what kinds of people are giving me negs for that post.

What issue could someoen have with that post?

Thabeet was big, clumsy, couldn’t shoot, but could swat the ball and play centerfield shot blocker around the rim better than just about anyone at the time.

If DeJuan Blair was on Michigan St that wouldve been unfair. He played at Pitt.

       2 separate games.

The blair "flip" game and the FF game where a vastly inferior MSU team upset UConn

Thabeet had defensive potential, but that was about it.

Embiid has even more defensive potential and way more offensive potential, but the big difference is that Embiid has actual skill in these areas already and is improving very quickly. Athletically they are night and day.

He basically has only one thing holding him back on defense right now and that is that he fouls too much. However, he isn’t fouling because he is being beaten and over compensating. He is creating unforced errors. They are purely due to his lack of experience. His physical ability and instincts are off the charts and once he figures out how to keep from fouling so much he will be dominant.

The people to compare Embiid to as a freshman in college are David Robinson and Hakeem Olajuwon. Not that I saw either one of them play in college, but skillswise he is with them, and statistically he is beyond them. You can’t simply look at him and say that he will eventually be as good as those two, but as a prospect he is right there with where they were as prospects at the same stage.

I must not understand what you wrote because it seems like you think people should compare Embiid to the 6’4" Freshman David Robinson who averaged 7.6 ppg.

Yeah, it’s just a stereotype, people hears of an african center who has just started playing basketball and it has to be a defensive force with no offensive skills. Embiid’s actually better on offense right now, he has a very polished skill set, I can’t remember any big drafted recently in the lottery with a more advanced offensive arsenal (I guess we have to go back to Monroe in 2010, but Monroe wasn’t good with his right hand and didn’t have the same kind of physical tools and potential). On defense he relies too much on his physical tools, he blocks obviously a lot of shots because of size, length, athleticism, has good timing and Ncaa bigs aren’t that big after al, but he still makes a lot of mistakes (though he doesn’t jump out of fakes too much and that’s a really good sign).

Thabeet was awkward running the floor and after 3 years of college could score only on lobs, putbacks and was still a project.

@TFaulk, can you please post a link to the post(s) in which you must have received 50-100 negs as you have -478 on 15 posts.  They must have been brilliant

i’m not sure how the point system works, but i was docked 500 pts for my 2012 mock draft results and then 1600 for my 2013 mock draft results.  i knew they were both bad, but not that bad….

Interesting – I will have to create a mock draft for this year in which I will win and get 1500 to increase my credibility.  I have a feeling that people don’t give me the props I deserve for my superior knowledge of basketball on all levels, pre K through Bob Cousy
