He doesn’t have much offensive game and his defense is negated due to his slight build. He is a glorified Ekpe Odoh.

I know you’re going to catch heat for this but I’m with you. Anyone who watched his Kentucky career knows he has absolutely no shot. All of his hook shots are basically throwing the ball down at the rim. He lacks the footwork, soft hands, and balance that is ideal for a true post player. He can be a difference maker on the defensive end which is why I like the Larry Sanders comparison but like Sanders he’s slight of frame and will get pushed around in the paint. Good news is he’s only 20 years old and so people have hopes he can sure up some of his deficiencies.

I’m going to have to agree. He’s kind of a mirror image of Bizmack Biyambo, who has a hard time escaping the bench in Charlotte. Both could be late bloomers (like Tyson Chandler) but I don’t see it.

No-one has seen him play in over a year so it’s easy to diss.  He’s about the quickest 7 footer on the planet with about the fastest 1st and 2nd jump.  He’s filled out.  If he just provides the D and boards his D in college and only scored on put backs and oops he’d be worth it

when your 6-6 point guard leads you in blocks most nights – I’m pretty sure sixer fans will appreciate him back there – he’s all upside

And to make it even worse, he hasn’t played in a single NBA game his career. Philly fans like to talk about a Wiggins-Noel or Embiid-Noel combo, but that doesn’t work if the Noel-part is wearing a suit. I really hope it will work, because no Wiggins+no Noel next year makes my cry.

I was never sold on his offense, from when I watched him play as a high school player and when I watched him play on Kentucky. Remember one year ago thinking that Noel is going to be something quite special on defense but I just see him getting destroyed by NBA bigs with his extremely raw offense.

Love to see him paired up front with a back to the basket bully like Randle.  He can focus on setting screens and rolling and hitting the offensive glass

Because just like before the draft he’s being propped up due to everyone else in his class being terrible.

He has better hands and offensive ability than Udoh and Biyombo, who struggle to catch the ball and lack spatial awareness.  He is also way more athletic than either of them and has a more promising resume.

Noel is flawed, but I can see him becoming a DeAndre Jordan type.  Slightly less physically dominant than Jordan, but he is more skilled than Jordan at the same age (not saying much).  Noel can be a lob target who is deadly running in transition.  He will cut hard to the rim, so he will be solid in the PnR game with practice.  And maybe he will develop as a post player in time.  His footwork isn’t good enough for him to become great, but he could become decent in time just due to his length and quickness.

And Noel really seems to be a potentially fantastic defender.  His instincts are a little overrated, but he is such a quick leaper and natural shot blocker that with coaching he should become an excellent rim protector. And he has really quick feet defending the PnR.

In all fairness, Nerlens Noel is a guy that posted a stat line of 10.5 ppg, 9.5 rpg, 4.4 bpg, 2.1 spg as a 19 y.o. while Udoh had less impresive stats as a 22 year old senior.

The guy is basically a 7-footer (6′ 11.5”) with a 7’4.75” wingspan, who is a great and fluid athlete.

I’m not sure he’ll ever be good on offense, but he’s basically a bigger and more athletic Larry Sanders, and that guy got an 11 million dollar contract. Considering that Nerlens Noel is only 20 and is getting constant personal training from Brent Brown, I can definitely see what there is to be excited about.

Not bigger than Larry Sanders. Going by combine measurements:

      Sanders:

      Wingspan: 7’575"

      Reach: 9’4"

      Noel:

      Wingspan: 7’375"

      Reach: 9’2"

in college, he seemed like a tall guy whose high school praise was based off him dominating much shorter guys, like many college bball players do. To the guy who made this link, here is another point to boost your obvious correct statement. Remember what Alex Len did to Noel? Noel has no offense to combat him and he could not stop Len. To all the guys using his upside as a protective barrier along with he hasnt played in a year. Well if he was dominated by a guy who doenst get much play time now, although to be fair he isnt given much of a shot in Phoenix’s fast pace system, what makes anybody think as a big minute taker he’ll thrive against nba bigs?

Remember what Wiggins did in the NCAA ?  Or Parker being shut down by Mercer ?  Or Vonleh’s IU team being the worst IU team in recent memory ?  Its easy to pot shot any of these guys and use one gameas an example and say they suck.

Lets revisit this post after summer league and at the all star break and then have something to actually go by

Noel was in his first week as a college player when he and Len matched up. Noel would have most likely been the number 1 pick had he not gotten injured. While ill agree he is still raw offensively, he’s no scrub. He already has two NBA skills. Blocking shots and stealing the ball. I watched every game he played and he is a difference maker. No he’s not a jump shooter, but he’ll develop a 15 ft jump shot. 6er fans should be excited. This is like getting the 5-6 th pick in this years draft.

His scouting tape was way more impressive than anyone in this or last years draft from an athletically dominant perspective. Add his uncommon defensive instinct and you have someone worth getting excited about.

I didn’t know that trying to block anything no matter what is an uncommon defensive instinct.  The guy jumped on just about every head fake thrown at him, he is no Anthony Davis defender (to be fair who is though?).  His best attribute is that he was a freak athlete, and now that might be a question after his surgery.  I’d say he is a wait and see type player.  Don’t want to write him off yet, but I think he is going to be somewhat underwhelming.  Remember this guy got his a$$ handed to him by Alex Lin who picked bench splitters all last season.

Noel was drafted for his defensive abilities but he did show some nice offensive touches for UK and hopefully he has been working on his shooting whilst he is out. It may seem too logical but if Noel could not do any physical workouts surely once his leg was fairly sound he takes the ball to the court and just practices his free throws, mid range shots when his leg strengthens up etc.

He’ll be fed a fair few easy baskets with dunks, put backs etc to keep him ticking over so if he has learnt a few moves then his offensive game can develop usefully.

I agree.  I doubt he’s ever a great rebounder due to his very slight frame.  And he probably won’t ever develop much of an offensive game.  He will be a terrific shot blocker though.  I hope I’m wrong b/c I’d like to see him develop into a great player, I just don’t see it happening.

commenting on his lack of offense: What kind of offensive game does Andre Drummond have?  Noel can still score, but he’s going to have to do it with hard work on the offensive glass until he shores up his post game or finds a jumper.  His athleticism and length should lend to him being a good offensive rebounder, which will open up second chance points.

Some players can control a game without scoring, and if a healthy Noel can rebound, dunk a few times a game, and block shots he could change things for the 76ers.

He will probably need a wide and heavy player next to him for a while, and then Noel can be the weak side help defedner swatting shots, but eventually Noel could be for his team what T Chandler was for the Mavericks when they won.

The 76ers are a huge chance to have back to back Rookie of the Year players.  Maybe Noel and who they draft this draft, as long as it isn’t an injured player, will be among the top contenders to follow MCW for the award.

Andre Drummond also is  about 270lbs and strong as an ox. Noel was barely over 200 lbs when he got drafted and although he has gained weight, he still is slender. Noel will probably be a Tyson chandler type player and Drummond could honestly be whatever he wants with his size and athleticism.

was a miscommunication.  I wasn’t comparing Noel to Drummond, they’re obviously different kinds of players.  Drummond has a much higher natural skill level and different body type.  I was just making the point that as a big man, you don’t necessarily have to be Tim Duncan on the block to score 12-15 PPG.
