Buddy Hield and Jamal Murray are two similar players in a few aspects. They are roughly the same size as the combine measured at about 6’5". They each will likely be shooting guards as pros. They each have good three point range. They are both expected to go within the first 7.

There are certainly differences though. First and perhaps most significantly is age as Buddy Hield is 22 while Jamal Murray is 19. Murray attacks the basket far more and could see time as point guard as he develops. Hield is the better shooter of the two right now.

So if your team needed a 2 guard who would you prefer Hield or Murray?

Ive gone back and forth on this. As of right now I would go with hield but it’s so close to 50/50 that I might change my mind in 10 minutes.

Murray is younger, a better ball handler and has 2 position potential although personally I don’t see him as pg.

Hield is a better shooter today and from a role player perspective, he won’t hurt a team as much as Murray. I could see Murray occasionally over dribbling and driving into defense while hield will be a smarter more disciplined guy who understands his role.

Very close call and either way you get an elite shooter. I do think both are a little overrated in some regards as hield is never going to be a beat you off the dribble type and Murray doesn’t have that freak athleticism where he can blow by guys. Both register as career role players in my book but there is nothing wrong with that. Any team would be lucky to add either guy.

Murray has the higher upside, can play two positions, and is less turnover prone than Hield. On the other hand, Hield is a better shooter and has more experience. Both are equal rebounders and passers. Because so much of NBA success is dependent on the situation a play starts his career in, I don’t think you can definitively say one of them will be better than the other. Between the two, I think Murray’s best fit is in Minnesota and Buddy’s best fit is in Boston. If Bender goes third to Boston, that could really screw things up for Buddy.

To me, Hield is a good fit in Minnesota if Lavine can develop as a passer. Murray could work in New Orleans because he could be a 1 or 2 and they need someone young to work and build a core with AD

They may be the one Team looking at All 3 Guards the hardest even though they have their eyes on adding Simmons #1…

Whoever they trade for will likely be in that group within the Top 5 (Murray, Hield or Dunn)

Whoever they think is the best fit/better long term prospect to pair with Simmons

My money is Murray is on everyone’s Top 5 and Dunn and Hield can slide into that 5-8 range

Look for Philadelphia to trade for 1 of those 3 to slide into that back court, book it…

Though they are similar in many ways, the age difference can’t be understated. Murray was better as a freshman than Hield was as a junior. Hield measured better than expected, but he didn’t particulary display that he used his long wingspan as a defender, and while he was very good as a sophomore and as a junior, he truly excelled once he was a man among boys. I envision his career playing out similarly to current Eric Gordon, who was slightly shorter but also a bit more explosive. Murray’s freshman year looks very similar to Ray Allen’s freshman season at UCONN on a per minute basis. I doubt Murray ever starts as a point guard, but he is far more likely to be able to execute as a the focal point of the offense as a pick and roll ballhandler. Murray will never be a stopper on defense, but he has a high basketball IQ and should be able to fit in to the team scheme (not that Hield won’t).

The age difference certainly makes me lean more toward Jamal Murray depending on the team drafting. I feel like Murray can do more than Hield right now and the only thing Hield has on Murray is he’s a better shooter right now. Teams are always hoping to find a guy who can become a star early in the draft and I think Murray has the better shot at becoming a star than Hield does.

I think definetly depends on team and team need, system is very important i think hield would be great in Phoenix, but i think age is also a factor who would be a better long term prospect which i believe would be Murray but again if im Boston i do have hield higher just because of position and fit.

Murrays defense is what scares me the most, he seems to be slow footed. Outside of that I would take him based on age, and handles. I don’t think either are going to be stars but neither have big bust potential. Shooting is at a premium in the league.

I like Murray, versatile, can play  the 1 and the 2 and looks to pass and get teammates involved more. Age also puts Murray ahead in my opinion. I think the team that gets Murray will have a gem.

Even tho Murray is younger, the fact thst Hield is the far superior athlete and longer makes me think theyre potential is similar.  I think both will be very good pros as theyre 2 of the best shooters to come along in awhile.

And Hielld shot over 60% at the rim which is another advantage he has on Murray.  Hield can also operate a PnR tho Murray can better
