Last year it seemed as if every team held their breath for months waiting for the day Ray Allen said he was going to play. This year I haven’t heard his name mentioned once. Do you think his time in the league is over or can we expect to hear the rumors fly again?

I feel like if he didn’t come back last year than he was unofficially retired. I mean he’s turning 40 soon, HoF lock, he was able to get another title on the way out. Should just leave his legacy where it is.

Basketball players don’t age by age number but actually wear and tear no the body and Ray Allen is a shooter so he could be waiting for the cap to jump and then sign a 1 or 2 year deal worth more than he can now.  By letting his body heal, he could potentially play longer than he would he kept playing also he could join a team late and now you see some players dont even play all the game because of health.  Ray Allen would do well in a set up like that.

There are two reasons why we haven’t heard anything –

    1) Allen may actually be retiring…dude is old and probably wouldn’t be playing anything over 20MPG

    2) Allen may be waiting it out to sign with a team…why take a risk and sign with a team that isn’t truly a championship contender? If Allen does return, it probably won’t be until Jan/Feb/April

Ray was none committal about saying he was truly done but the fact that he didn’t join the roster of a play off team towards the end of last season could suggest he is done. The alternative is that if he hadn’t played for several months and not done a pre-season or at least kept working out regularly he may not have felt he wanted to return if he was not as fit as he should be,

We all know Ray looked after himself well, he played to nearly 39 if you want proof. But he also plays to a high standard and maybe feels he needs to commit to a comeback and not just jump on a roster midway through a seaason.

Personally I think if he does want to return, he’ll ensure he’s back to near peak fitness and look to get on a roster circa deadline day time. There is no real point Ray playing a full season at this stage in his career, a team would want his shooting for the regular season run in and the play off run. I’m sure if he did return he’d get a load of offers.

Also he only needs 27 more threes for 3,000 career 3 pointers, that might be a nice incentive to return for one more run.

I don’t think he’s coming back. I live in Uconn, and Ray was practicing with the team for a few weeks getting ready to return like all the rumors were saying last year, and I had the pleasure of talking with him during this time. He said he was 50/50 then, and that if he didn’t go back it wasn’t because he couldn’t, but because he wanted to have time with his family. A lot of UConn alumm actually do this (practice with the team), and it’s led to me meeting a ton of NBA players. Ray is usually one of the guys who comes in every year to do workouts with the team, and he also is a nice part of thier recruiting (I’m not so sure about Ollie, but Calhoun used to have Rudy Gay, Ray Allen, and Okafor come in to court the guys he really wanted).

For what it’s worth, I usually always know when the former UConn players come back to work out for the team, and I haven’t heard Ray’s name mentioned once.
