What’s Wrong With the Knicks?

Of course it starts with defense, or the lack thereof, but don’t laugh, I think they’ve actually improved over the last 3 games. At this point in time, the two biggest problems for the Knicks are REBOUNDING and SHOOTING, 2 things Coach D’Antoni cannot do for them.

Obviously you can’t win without the ball, rebounding is critical, so we’ll look at the team stats for the last 2 games which is a great indicator of how bad they are in this area. Once again, I think D’Antoni should play Milicic at center and Lee at PF and maybe they’ll show some improvement.

But the surprising thing for me so far is the horrible shooting by some of their key players. It’s almost as bad or worse than their rebounding stats. So after rebounding, we’ll look at the last 2 games against Cleveland and Milwaukee over the weekend. I’ll give you the shooting stats for 3 of their key offensive players and then give you the season FG % for each of them, which is very revealing.

Rebounding

Milwaukee out rebounded the Knicks an astounding 54 to 34

Wilson Chandler shot 5 for 12 against Cleveland and then an almost unbelievable 1 for 10 against Milwaukee. He shot only 6 for 22 in his last 2 games. For the season, he’s shooting an horrendous 34%.

Al Harrington shot 5 for 14 against Cleveland and only 1 for 7 against Milwaukee. He shot 6 for 21 in his last 2 games. For the season, he’s shooting 42%, which isn’t all that bad, but he’s very inconsistent. Harrington is one of those rare guys who actually tries too hard and often plays without discipline. He needs to slow down a little.

Chris Duhon, who is nothing more than a decent back up point guard, shot 0 for 6 against Cleveland and followed that up with another shutout going 0 for 4 against Milwaukee. It’s hard to believe but he’s shooting an almost unheard of 25% for the season so far. You can’t win without a strong PG and Duhon is proof of that.

There you have it, the stats above don’t lie and give you a clear indication as to why the Knicks are playing so horribly.

they’re playing terrible and they gave up 40 first quarter points in 2 straight games. They really miss Nate Robison’s energy off the bench and hopefully they get out of their huge shooting slump. Suprising they have bad offense in an offensive system. The only good thing, Gallo is getting better.

chris duhon is the biggest problem, d’antonis system needs a decent point guard, duhon isnt even top 40 in the league. cant make a shot, pass or play defense, once he goes the knicks will improve.

when you have a point guard that gets into the lane and is no threat of scoring, that is a major problem. The defense does not need to collapse and in turn does not get the “shooters” we have open. I liked the Jordan Hill pick at the time and he looked decent the other night but watching Brandon Jennings get to the hoop on Saturday I think we made a mistake. If the Knicks win 20 games i will be suprised.

I think the knicks turn the season around a little and win about 30 games. Hopefully our young guys can keep growing and wilson chandler gets his act together.

I agree with BKBaller, biggest problem right now is PG play

Chris Duhon…hes shooting 25% from inside, and 21% from outside…

I mean, hes a horrible PG, He wouldnt start on any other NBA team, and I believe, on most other NBA teams he’d be 3rd string

Imo, the Knicks should have signed Jason Williams for cheap when they had a chance

But..who else are the Knicks gonna play? Nate Robinson is a super undersized shooting guard, Toney Douglas is 2 inexperienced, and Larry Hughes at the point is risky

I mean, theres alot more problems than just Duhon, but Duhon is the biggest problem in my eyes

lol..playing better the last 3 games..they actually look worst…for anyone who thinks just having a pg would fix there problem must not have been paying much attention..this team has years to go before becomming a threat which is how it is when you are rebuilding which is what they are doing. too many people are tryna ruh them and find a get better quick solution when they need to just be more patient (does that word even go with being a knicks fan though)

1: They don’t have a starting point guard.

2: They don’t have a starting center.

3: Wilson Chandler doesn’t get the most out of his athletic 6’8, 230 lb frame.

4: Not enough effort on the defensive end as a team.

5: Take way too many threes.

6: Not enough talent on the defensive end as individuals.

7: No lottery pick in 2010.

8: Gallinari needs to hit the weight room. He did have the back injury, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

I honestly don’t think that a superstar would come to the Knicks right now. They’re “rebuilding,” if you wanna call it that.

Their biggest problem is they shoot way too many threes when you miss a 3 it leads to a long rebound and the other team is fast breaking and they need a PG duhon is not the answer and with nate being out he is pretty much their only option besides douglass who is a rookie. They are a real bad team one of the worst and i dont see it getting any better.

They have no big people that rebound all they have really is lee taht is a legitimate rebounder other than that they have a bunch of guards and fowards taht like to shoot jumpers and not go after the boards.

Many of you made lots of good points, however, I didn’t see anybody addressing one of the two major issues I posted when starting this thread, rebounding. Let me once again post the stats from the last 2 Knick games.

Although I agree with the comments about Duhon, who is a guy who can only back up a legitimate PG with 10 -12 minutes per night, a real PG still won’t resolve their rebounding issues. They were out rebounded by 15 and then 20 boards two games in a row.

i agree rebounding is a problem but i see no problem that more important then defense a team can get alot of rebounds but if you can stop them from turing those rebounds into points then you have a better chance to win..you can out rebound a team but if the team scores at will and out scores you then it doesnt matter

^ rtbt said what I was going to say to Quincey…but their “laundry list” as OJ Jones called is:

1. They’re young guys aren’t ready, except Gallinari to an extent. He’s an NBA level shooter, but everything else is either too unpolished or due to a lack of strength.

2. Chris Duhon isn’t going to cut it, and neither is Toney Douglass. Brandon Jennings anyone?

3. They don’t defend or rebound well enough.

4. They don’t have anyone that can get their own shots except Harrington with Nate out

5. They don’t really have the horses to have a transition team. Duhon isn’t a fast break PG…

6. I thought Wilson Chandler would break out by now, but he’s too passive for me and he’s not quite a good enough shooter right now.

Quincey, it isn’t the total rebounds per game that matters most because that depends on how many missed shots there are in a game. The key rebounding stat to focus on is the REBOUNDING DIFFERENTIAL, how many more or less per game does your opponent get.

Boston has slightly less total rebounds than the Knicks, but their rebounding differential is actually a PLUS 1.5 which means Boston is out rebounding their opponents.

On the other hand, the Knicks have a -9.00 rebounding deficit which means their opponents are getting 9 more rebounds per game than they. That is the worst differential in the league.

In the last two games the Knicks played, the rebounding differential against Cleveland was a minus 15 and against Milwaukee it was a minus 20, which are staggering numbers.

Iguodala we all know that the Knicks screwed up again by passsing on Jennings for Hill who is a stiff. No point in bringing it up now. I wanted him more than anybody.

The Knicks are 1-7 so we might as well play Toney Douglas. No future in Duhon.

Curry’s return has flown under the radar but his post scoring is almost unstoppable. Thats as close as we have to a go-to player when we need a bucket. If he can break into this system watch out. He’s lean and has to start working for his next contract.

The team has been in a shooting slump but the dribble penetration of douglas can help free up guys on the perimeter.

curry when healthy is a ok offensive option but i wouldnt call 13pts a game career average almost unstoppable…his return has flown under the radar because hes still out of shape and hurt…it should fly wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy under the radar
