valentineWas he mentally ill? Larry Sanders was lucky to get diagnosed, but a lof of guys with a mental illness never were.
Anyway, I’d like to know what Darko’s deal was. Because not only was he huge, he was a bad ass, and fearless seeming. Huge and bad ass sounds like a good combination. Most huge guys where Superman PJs like Dwight and have their mom make their phone calls for them, like DeAndre "Grown Ass Man" Jordan.
Darko seemed to have a really nice comeback of sorts in Minnesota. Then he came to Boston, and looked great in the preseason, but Doc Rivers refused to play him and he ended up quiting basketball. Then he tried kickboxing.
Anybody know why Darko didn’t work out better, seems like he was probably at least as good as Omir Asik or something.

Ballzach30ParticipantOmer’s skillset is a ravenous rebounder, with some rim protecting skills. Darko was an offensive player, who didnt pan out. He didnt have anything wrong with him mentally other then confidence.

herceg_bukuParticipantDarko doesnt have a mental disorder, he just never cared much for basketball in my opinion. He was God gifted enough to alst nearly 10 seasons in the NBA just of pure potential that he never even tapped into. He loves to party and basketball was just something that got him paid, and that is the story.

cargathusParticipantI think it’s a combination of a lack of love for basketball and Larry Brown. I think he initially enjoyed the sport, but once it’s ruined for you (bench for several seasons can do that to you) then it’s really hard to find your passion for the sport again.

ChewyParticipantis Larry Brown. He has NO LOVE for rookies and he had a great vetern team to rely on. He never had a need to play Darko because of his vets. So Darko withered on the bench- not a good situation for someone who lacks motivation to begin with (as mentioned by buku above).
Plus when he did play, Larry didn’t let him work through his mistakes. Larry Brown crushed him mentaly in less than a season.

DrivingDownTheStreetinmy64Larry brown has been the excuse for years!! But Larry wasn’t the reason he was a bust!! My Investigation discovered the reason he failed to perform was because The Wallace boys gave him a wedgie before each game!!!

mjfan83ParticipantIt’s a complete shame Darco goes 2 ahead of Melo. FOR BOTH of them. Darco needed to player; he had talent, and Melo might be a 3 time 4 time champ as a Piston.

HitsterParticipantLarry Brown had a proven team in Detroit but he was known for relying on a proven core of players, some say he overplayed his key players but he’s an HOF coach so I cannot criticise his record.
Darko was still only 20 when he was traded to Orlando and over the next 6 years continued to show glimpses and frustrate us continually.
His big problem was being in such a loaded draft with the guys all around him having stellar NBA careers and maybe he just lacked that killer on court instinct. He had size, skillset and if he is prepared to do MMA then he obviously had the toughness.
