Knicksboy34ParticipantBlocks or Steals?
I lean toward Blocks…I think it’s harder to be a block expert over a steal expert.

JoeWolf1I’m not sure, but i’d be curious to see how many players tally 100 blocks to 100 steals per season, but i’d be willing to bet many more players tally 100 steals, so in my opinion it would have to be blocks, and coming from a former shot blocker, there is nothing sweeter than seeing a shot swatted into the crowd or against the back board, a nasty blocked shot is one of my favorite things about the game

gatorheelsParticipantI think steals are a more important & impressive stat. Main thing is you can block a shot but the opposing team could still get the ball. If a player makes a steal then the possession has changed. I also think in general from my experience playing basketball that getting steals is a little harder than blocking a shot. There isn’t a wrong answer though just a personal opinion.
I enjoy stealing & blocking… both are pretty exciting.

Knicksboy34ParticipantI dunno. My issue with Stealing is… if another tips it, you grab it…thats a steal
you gotta have excellent timing to block a shot

gatorheelsParticipantThats a good point too.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/17/2009 - 10:25am #183490

MagikKnickParticipantIt really depends on the person, when someone with a 7’6 wingspan gets a block, its not that impressive, but for a guy like D-Wade who blocks alot of shots, thats impressive
But in general I would say steals, you gotta know how to read and anticipate which direction the ball handler is going & his dribbling timing
Put it this way, a player average 6 steals in a season
another player averages 6 blocks in a season
Just based on that, whos your favorite for DPOY?0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/17/2009 - 10:27am #183493
da gurusteals teams that get a lot of steals have winning records utah, denver, lakers
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/17/2009 - 10:28am #183496

JoeWolf1I know blocking a shot doesn’t always lead to a change in possession like a steal does, but a good shot blocker will throw off and alter many shots per game even if he doesn’t get a stat for a block, people may not try to drive as much against someone with quick hands, but i think a good shot blocker changes the game through intimidation more than a great ball theif

Knicksboy34ParticipantI know this in old but here me out.
Remember Pat Ewing? At G’Town, He made players shy away from the basket. It didn’t matter goaltend or not, he alter shots and possesions
also, ask big man in the 90 going against Mutumbo
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/17/2009 - 10:40am #183507

JoeWolf1Sean Bradley, Roy Rogers, Manute Bol, Greg Ostertag, Mark Eaton, had very little game aside from shot blocking yet managed to change the game doing what they did best and enjoyed long careers. I can’t think of any players that were strictly game changers through stealing the ball, perimeter defenders yes, but not strictly steal specialists

Knicksboy34ParticipantI cannot think off a player who all he does is steal…
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/17/2009 - 10:46am #183519

MagikKnickParticipantThats what makes it better, its rare & you dont come by it often…its harder to be a steal specialist than a block specialist
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/17/2009 - 10:49am #183523

JoeWolf1Good call on McMillan that was his specialty, but he was terrific at running an offense, im not sure but i think he averaged 8 or 9 assists per game at some point in his career, he was more than a ball thief, but as close to a steal specialist as i can think of

bluedevils12Participantbecuz you can block a shot back to the opposing team and they get it. But a steal means u get possesion. I think some guys get a lil ridiculous with blocks. Like dwight howard. Dwight spends more time giving the opposing team points with goaltending than he does swatting shots. another thing is when guys seem 2 catch a block and throw it in the crowd. i kno its an intimidation thing but i feel like if u gonna do all that u jus as well grab the ball out the air
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/17/2009 - 10:53am #183530

JoeWolf1Bill Russell was the only one i can think of who did that on a regular basis, he was the best shot blocker of all time in my opinion, Jordan as a Wizard punked Ron Artest by grabbing the ball out of his hands when he was going up for a dunk, that was sweet haha
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/17/2009 - 10:56am #183533

Knicksboy34ParticipantBut hear me out- Blocks are more important IMO because you can get hustle blocks….it almost impossible to get a hustle steal..
Also, when some big men get drafted they take shot-blocking in account
I never heard someone say about a player…he lacks stealing the ball
Steals are a luxury IMO.Blocks are tougher to get.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/17/2009 - 11:14am #183547

sheltwon3ParticipantSteals are harder to get by far but Blocks to me are more helpful if you have a shotblocker that knows how to control the ball on a block. Sometimes goes for a steal hurts your overall defense. Blocks are the final showdown and can erase a perfectly executed shot. It also takes away a would be made field goal. Steals at key moments are big but the chances of getting those risk getting caught out of defense.

the microwaveParticipantbest guy on steals i ever saw – alvin robertson (BUCKS) his DEFENsE WAS FILTHY.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/17/2009 - 1:15pm #183645
nthegoodlifeParticipantMany players who go for steals, often put themselves out of position to defend, and thus put their team in odd spots to recover (worlds worst is prolly AI).
Blocks are great, but many players swat the ball out of bounds or so far the opposing team gets the ball back (D Howard comes to mind).
Personally I’ll take a player who has zero blocks or steals, but contest nearly every shot they can get to (in other words, I’d prefer a contest or an altered shot). I would love to have a guy who alters shot after shot.

butidonthavemoneyNeither. Drawing charges is the most impressive.

0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/17/2009 - 6:08pm #183773

JoeWolf1Jordan did that too man, i think twice,…Clarence Witherspoon did it too, tons of players did, i think Olajuwan did it probably 4 or 5 times
0 - Posted on: Sat, 07/18/2009 - 6:39am #183870
xbadgerhustlerParticipantI’d definitely agree with the steal being better than the block because that means you ended the opponent’s possession, by definition.
And as for the ‘steals put you out of position’… the same can be said for a block. when you go for the block, you leave the opposing big un-boxed for the OReb… both have some risk, and both have a high reward. I think the risk of going for a steal, which is basically that a guy will have an opening on the perimeter is a worse risk than letting a big man have a free offensive board and putback (if you miss the block) and you’re not even guaranteed to get the ball.

THE GAME GETS BETTER AND BETTER
KOBE DROPPED 81 POINTS IN A GAME
IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE TO DO IN TODAYS GAME??? FOR 1 MAN IT WAS….
IT DONT MATTER IF HE GUNNED OR WHATEVER U MIGHT SAY THATS PRETTY HARD PLAYING ANOTHER NBA TEAM
I NEVER REALLY SEEN JORDAN PLAY MUCH BUIT I CAN TELL YOU HES HYPPPPPPPED IF YOU BELIVE HE IS AND WILL BE THE BEST PLAYER OF ALL TIME..FUNY HOW PPL PREDICT THE FUTURE HOW DO YOU KNO HE WILL BE THE BEST PLAYER OF ALL TIMES ITS MILLIONS OF YEAR AHEAD WITH BILLLLLLLLIONS OF BASKET BALL PLAYERS READY TO BE BORN

D WADE A HURT THEOTHER TEAM TO0 - Posted on: Sat, 07/18/2009 - 1:55pm #184038
billykParticipantOh you never seen Jordan play and you havent seen Robinson, so how can you comment on them… Ive watched Jordan since 88′ and dude was the TRUTH… Naw im not on a banwagon if you seen him play, you would understand how nasty he was…. As far as rule change the game was ALOT more PHYSICAL in the 90’s… I can say dude is the GOAT cause all you go to do is check his resume….. I dont think DHoward has EVER in his life faced a center the caliber of Mr. Robinson (im not even gonna mention The Dream)…. Robinson would just as good as a defender as Howard but a much better offensive player (see: the 15 footer)…. Also Magic would POST Paul all day and he was long enough where he would be able to stay in front off Paul (Magic was an underrated athlete)…. The 90’s would own the 00’s….

bluedevils12Participantu kinda jus proved my point if uread wat u wrote. U said hustle blocks can be gotten but hustle steals are nearly impossible 2 get. So doesnt that mean steals are more important? I mean u said it jus like u mean it and i agre 100% with u. steals are harder 2 come by
0 - Posted on: Sun, 07/19/2009 - 4:00am #184298
STEVEDOT2ParticipantI aint say I never watched jordan play…. you know what tho howard wouldnt dominate robinson but he would get boards and howard came to the league as a power foward so duncan would face his old teammate davis………i think it a be a great match up………..ok magic a post up cp3 but on the other end you think magic can stop an iverson or wade..wade plays 6’6 6’7 6’8 guys nightley and holds his own against bigger gaurds..but it would be a great game……..oh and 1 match up would determine the game lebron and_____________ who knows becuase i wouldnt really count bird who only played 2 and a half seasons in the 90s but if you do hes still no match for lebron
0 - Posted on: Sun, 07/19/2009 - 10:24am #184456
billykParticipantI would put Pippen on Lebron (he wouldnt stop him but he would harrass the hell out of him)….. As far as stopping Iverson or Wade it wouldnt matter cause the game will be close and it will come down to the last 2 minutes and I have the BEST CLOSER EVER HANDS DOWN…… Jordans ability to dominant the end of ball games will be the deciding factor….
