SwaggyVCParticipantThis subject is pretty relevant for me, because for some reason people always descibe me as having natural talent…. But a bad work ethic [for a fourteen yr old that is].
You always hear players like T-Mac, Vinsanity etc being described as having natural talent, but what in your opinion is it?
pretty broad question sorry

For_Never_EverParticipantI have a friend who is/was a natural very good athlete at 6’2 long armed. But, he just never cared about sports ever. I believe if he worked on his basketball game he would at least be playing overseas, and if he took the NFL route he be in the league as a receiver or some defensive position. I’m pretty sure he regrets it now.

HaleParticipantI don’t know your friend but there is a huge gap between very good athlete and NFL athlete and that’s not even regarding skill/technique.

frogmanParticipantWatch an SEC college football game and there are some awesome athletes on that field and most don’t even sniff the league. I think you are underestimating just how hard it is to be a professional athlete when you say he could of at east been a pro basketball player or NFL player.

CameronCrazy11ParticipantHere’s how I’ve always viewed it:
Natural talent-being good at a given task, sport, activity, etc. without needing to put much work into it; exceptional physical ability
Now just because you’re naturally talented, it doesn’t mean you’re also lazy. I know plenty of people in a wide range of areas who have an exceptional natural talent but are also the hardest workers I know in that area. To sum it up, when you’re naturally talented at something, it comes very easy to you.

3 No Biases 3ParticipantYou have it right on the money…
I played golf in college and there were a couple guys on my team, who are now pros, that didn’t have to practice at all and they could still shoot under par every round. That is Natural Talent. Other guys had to practice multiple hours a day to come close to their level.
I think when it comes down to it every player in the NBA has "Natural Talent" with at least some amount of self discipline. The sad truth is that there aren’t many average joe’s that just busted their asses harder than anyone make it in a sport professionally..

jwall1ParticipantCompare Jabari Parker and Andrew Wiggins. Parker has more natural talent as a scorer/offensive skills, but Wiggins has more talent as an athlete.

MkadozaParticipantNatural talent is what defines how good you can be if all the tools you were natural imbued with are used to their maximum. Its what talent evaluators refer to as "potential". You can’t teach height, you can’t teach explosion, and you can’t teach coordination. Players at the upper end of the spectrum, like Anthony Davis, Andre Drummond, and Joel Embiid, and even even Kwame Brown and Greg Oden are such high draft picks because of it. Because so few humans have those characteristics, that you’d rather take the chance on finding a true diamond than manufacturing lesser stones.

JoeWolf1At 14, not much. It means if you don’t work hard you’ll get passed up by guys that grow later and work harder than you do.

mplsrawkusParticipanti was always an above average athlete but from april of my jr year in high school i started lifting my legs like a mad man and did plyo and speed work along with it and by the start of senior year basketball season i added 11" to my vert and dropped my 40 yard dash time a full second. i went from a decent athlete to the best althlete on the team in 7 month. no substitute for hard work. if you think your a naturally athletic at 14 i would suggest you work your ass off the through highschool if you wanna reach your full potential.

HitsterParticipantAt 14, kids who are good at one sport are often good at another but very few of them become the next Bo Jackson or Max Woosnam ( Google him – interesting guy) so they maybe use their natural athletic ability to become good at sports without needing much coaching.
Perhaps taking this away from basketball to a sport like Golf, Tiger Woods and Sevi Ballesteros were both naturally talented and had a natural ability for the sport but someone like say Nick Faldo who was a very good young golfer, had to work really hard at his game and refine his swing to become a major winner.
In basketball someone like Ben Wallace whilst being a great athlete, total gym rat had to work really hard at his game to reach the elite defensive level of his peak Detroit years.

Scrooge McDuckParticipantNatural talents are the components of your game you can’t work on with practice, IMO.

TallmanNYCParticipant14 is a weird age. Basically the guys who are going through puberty faster have a tremendous advantage over guys who going through slower. But that advantage is largely done by the time you are 18. Wolf’s point is right that a lot of natural talent won’t be enough. There is probably a kid in your school who is tall, skinny and akward now, but if keeps working is going to be a successful athlete. That’s kind of what happened to me. I was a mediocre athlete in highschool. No speed at all and not too strong. I worked hard on my game through college and by the end of that I’m sure I was better than nearly everyone from my highschool team.

LeroyJenkinsParticipantNatural talent is when you can scrub your older cousin in Smash Bros fresh out the box without even reading the instructions
swaggy why does your pic look like an alien from Men in Black?
Forever Never why is yours the lamest dude in Capcom vs SNK 2?
