Lotto StudParticipantWould he be rated as the #1 point guard heading into the draft over the likes of Markelle Fultz and Lonzo Ball?

Taylor Gang MikeParticipantHard to say. Louisville would of been a good spot with a PG spot open. But other than that his top 5 was UK, Duke, NC and NC State. Only NC State promised him the keys. NC has Berry and him and Smith prolly couldnt have played together. Same with Frank Jackson at Duke and Fox at UK. NC State was the school all along and he wanted to take the Fultz and Simmons route…

Lotto StudParticipantI honestly thought Louisville would be the spot for him before he committed to NC State.

wonzi_bellsParticipantHe would have played over Jackson at Duke but I agree with Louisville probably being the best choice for him since I don’t see anyway he wouldn’t be playing better defense with Pitino as his coach.

Ribet JimiParticipantSmith has been good. He could be N.C State’s first ACC freshman of the year since 1977

BiggysmallsParticipantNo idea how it affects his draft stock given he’ll likely be a top-5 pick, but man thinking about him playing at UNC has me feeling some kind of way.
That’s the type of player the Tar Heels don’t have – explosive get your own shot kind of guy – and I doubt he’d coast as much playing on a team like that where they are in every game.
Playing with Berry could be a good thing because it would force him to learn how to play with and without the ball.
As a Minnesota Sports fan I’ve gotten good at dreaming. I’m dreaming about that one now.

IlladelphParticipantI always saw Smith as a UNC kind of guy wearing that tar heel blue. He would have been able to play next to Berry and those two would have been a hell of a back court. Never thought he would play at Kentucky with Fox and Monk and Briscoe already there. Duke, sure he could have gone there and played 30 minutes a game and Jackson would not have been serious competition for him. Louisville would also have been a great fit for him too, but the whole sex scandal thing probably turned him off of Louisville.
All in all, I saw him at UNC, with NC State a darkhorse contender. I think going to UNC would have been better for his long-term career and personal brand. He could have been part of the Jordan legacy a la Stackhouse, Jamison, Carter, etc… Smith would have fit right in and it just felt so right when he was being recruited.
In the end, he chose NC State probably because he felt that he could "be the man" there. Too bad, because that was short-sighted. He not only will not contend for a championship like he would have at UNC, his personal brand would have been so much shinier as a Tar Heel.

binetParticipantI don’t think so.
I tend to think Lonzo Ball would not have been able to be ranked in the top 5 if he was playing in a shitty team and understand the point, but Fultz has been playing in a very very bad team and claimed the number 1 spot. Same with Simmons last year. Transcendant talents are going to be number 1 regardless. Dennis Smith was never going to be taken before Fultz anyway.

D7H7NParticipantCan’t imagine how good UNC would be if Roy finally got his hands on a one-and-done point guard. Roy would tell Smith ro run his brains out like he did with Lawson.
