Some people ask what happen to the mid-range game..It seems to be a lost art in today’s game..Only a handful of today’s players can hit it …Some would rather step and attempt a 3,then take the 15 footer…Back in the day teams had big men like Ewing,Kevin McHale and Moses Malone ,that could step out and hit the mid range shot..

Some blame Sportscenter becuz everyone wants to be seen making the 2 glamour shots in basketball..The DUNK & 3 POINTER…

Here is a good article i stumbled on that brings to Light why the Mid-Range Shot isnt use by some coaches……

This is just off my head. It really isn’t that much of a loss art in my opinion.

Koby, Melo, Wade, Joe Johnson , Carlos Boozer, Richard Hamilton, Kevin Garnet, Chris Bosh, Russel Westbrook, Derrick Rose, Dirk, Tim Duncan, LaMarcus Aldrige, Stoudemire,

Nothing. Nothing at all. This is just a generic topic people like to bring up so they can argue. Plenty of guys can hit the mid range stuff. Guys come into the league sooner nowadays and that’s partly because players athleticism is at an all time high generally. Its just easier for these guys nnow to get to the bucket because of their athleticism and also with how the defensive rules have changed (no hand checking, reach in calls, pretty much any real aggressive defense gets called now.) But guys can still shoot it. Also there are guys who are used specifically for the 3ball on rosters now also.

A few other guys that are so good at other things, that their mid range game doesn’t get mentioned.  Chris Paul, Steve Nash, Tony Parker, Paul Peice, Allen Iverson, Grant Hill, I know I’m likely missing a few other people.

Well the mid-range game died simply because the lack of efficiency it had when it came to generating offense. The most efficient (i.e. the best places to shoot from) are from the rim area (nice and close to the basket), and the 3 point line, where you get the benefit of an extra point to compensate for the added distance.

Take into account that 3s are much harder to contest than  midrange shots, and you have a dying breed right there. There are still guys who have that midrange game, like Kobe and Westbrook, but it’s a less desired skill. It’s even more pronounced in college basketball, with the high amount of people that can stroke it, but may not be athletic enough to blow by their man.

This is why NBA teams are valuing stretch 4s and 5s now. Good news for guys like Harrellson and Bargnani, bad for traditional post-up Cs like Al Jefferson.

back in the 80s u had great midrange shooters because the 3pt line was just added to the game and alot of guys who came before it or at the same time were used to shooting from midrange cause there wasnt 3pt line before, nowadays kids are either shooting 3s or atacking the basket(alot of these combo-guards are playing that way) its dying art but there will always be guys who will have that midrange game in their arsenal, elite scorers like Durant,Kobe,Wade,Melo etc…

Players became more effective from 3pt. Therefore the overall points-per-attempt stat now shows that the midrange shot is the most inefficient. This has been highly publicized. The following article explains it briefly:

    http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/7791774/nba-midrange-game-case-good-inefficiency

Anyway, I think there are still some players with good midrange: Kobe, Dirk, Nash, Hamilton, Aldridge, etc.

The mid-range shot is not an inefficient shot, the long 2 is.

RUDEBOY, you’re preaching to the choir.  I can’t believe you’re at -10 for this.  I feel like young players would rather drive or shoot 3’s rather than hone the craft of shooting.  I personally lay partial blame to the advent of the 3 point line.  How many times have you guys played ball with a guy who sucked, but was money from 3?  This isn’t a concept unique to your everyday Joe’s.  Kids growing up want to shoot the 3, and that’s fine, but I feel the mid-range game has been lost as a consequence.

I sound like a ranting old man, but prove me wrong.  I love running the flex and triange offenses, as a post, because of that flash to the top of the key.  It’s deadly, and it’s not used anymore.  It’s not adaptation because it’s not relevant, but because it’s not cool.

I definatly agree with Rudeboy, almost all those guys on Rudeboy’s list are bigs, there are very few wing players who predicate their game on taking on or two dribbles and pulling up from midrange. Russell Westbrook does it alot, James Harden and Manu do it somtimes to keep defenders honest, but we just don’t see it anymore. I also agree with Joe Wolf, so many guys are too focused on only shooting threes, they fall in love with it, but still shoot a low percentage. And beause of their athleticsim, they drive to the basket. Almost all good three point shooters can have a beautiful rip through-pull-up move, but yet they want to shoot that 30 footer. Imagine if JR Smith predicates his game from around 15 feet instead of jacking up 30 footers with a hand in his face? He’d be pretty deadly.

Yeah,I often hear guys like Hubie Brown,Jerry West,Bob Cousy and others talk about the lost art of the mid-range shot..Sure,there are still guys that shoot it..But there are so many others that would rather attempt a 3 because the percentage is higher….Sometimes you can watch a nba or college game and wonder why players are struggling to hit a jump shot….

    @Siggy

I don’t know what the percentages say, but I’ve always heard and just been told by coaches, etc that the long two was the worst shot in basketball.

People who are dismissive of mid-range jumpers to long 2s show their ignorance of basketball. Spacing and forcing the defense to account for threats on the floor is the key to effective halfcourt offense. No team wants to live off mid-range jumpers or long 2s, and at no point in the league’s history has that been the case. The problem exists when teams put out players who defenses don’t guard that they inhibit the effectiveness of the players who score in the post and off the dribble. The ability to makes defenses scramble consistently is more important than any one shot in the game.
