I’ve been seeing all over this forum that people would like to sign rudy gay away from the grizz. If some team with a load of money signs gay to a crazy a$$ contract – meaning it wouldn’t be worth to match, what should the grizz do to make up for the loss of him?

So far this season, I believe rudy is playing his best ball. He’s going for rebounds, he’s making and taking better shots. He’s passing. I see him try to block shots…even if he’s not successful, he still atempts to block them. I’m seeing him follow through on nice dunks. I’m seeing him fit well with o.j mayo.

I think he’s only worth 5y/55 million AT BEST…… meaning he’d have to average 20+ppg, 7rpg, 1-2apg ALL YEAR LONG…..and actually show more killer instinct.

there are plenty of quality players in this free agent summer…but looking at the list of unrestricted free agents…all i can see that are close enough or better than gay talent-wise are ( ginobli, mike miller, t.outlaw, a-harrington… and joe johnson…which just looks like an amazingly long reach in case the grizzlies attempted for him.

as far as restricted Free agents, (tyrus thomas, kleiza)…which to me are quite a few steps down from rudy gay’s talent.

I say, if the contract offer from another team isn’t more than 11m…then the grizz should keep him. If it’s a wild contract, then the grizz take quite a few steps back in the rebuilding process, and would have to look at maybe using that 3-10 ranged pick for a SF…and their other two picks for a PG and PF…..

I’d like to hear as many opinions as I can about this issue.

There’s always a sign and trade. Don’t think Grizzlies will let him walk for nothing.

but if someone’s attempting for gay, it’s highly likely they have a hole at the 3, so what should the grizz try to get in return? point guard?

Depends on what team… and with a very deep and talented 2010 draft pool, a first round pick is like gold.

i think it would have to be number one pick because other then that none of the players are as good as gay. i dont even think any have a higher potential then gay has

but the draft is before the free agent signings. so should the grizz go ahead and draft a SF in the draft just in case a couple weeks later someone else trys to take gay away?

i agree. if he puts his mind to it and tries real hard, he is an extremely valuable player.

no because hes a restricted free agent so what ever someone trys to give him they can match. so they wont be losing him next year and if he gives them any indication that he really doesnt wanna resign after that then trade him

I think Gay is better than anyone you listed except for Joe Johnson. I think Gino is good but I think he is on the team he needs to be on, I don’t know if he would be as good on another team. Him, Parker and Duncan are like Stockton and Malone, they should just stay together. What the Grizz do will be determined with how they do over the course of the year and what kind of pick they get. They need a pg really badly and could take one in the draft or sign one. What would worry me if I were a Grizz fan that wanted to keep Gay is that he is restricted so a team knows they will have to overpay him in order for Memphis to pass on him. The ’10 draft has some solid SF prospects Johnson/Aminu/Ebanks/George and other than Wall and maybe Warren this year is unlike last years PG class.
Maybe sign Ridnour or Alston or something and take a SF in the draft if you let him go, or if you keep him you keep Conley until the next year when Randolph is off the books and maybe Thabeet is your starting C (haha) and Gasol PF…
Also they may be able to do a sign and trade with Gay…

i agree and disagree. Gay is much better than everybody i listed, and i don’t think the grizzlies have a chance in hell to reel in joe johnson.

it will take all year to know whether the grizz want to keep him or not, but i’m strongly pushing to keep him. I also agree that we need a pg badly. Conely gives the grizzlies just enough hope…when it doesn’t matter. We do not need a point guard like that. We need a point guard that can create for mayo/gay/gasol…..

where i do not agree is starting thabeet and moving gasol to the 4, it’s just not gonna work lol

You’re right the Grizz would never get Joe Johnson, and I think on that team Thabeet can be in just for defense. There is a lot of firepower on that team if they keep Gay and Gasol/Thabeet could be like Przy/Oden defensively. I think Oden is the best defender of all four by far but I think coming inside would be difficult with the two of them in there. It’s that or Thabeet is on his way to becoming the next Darko (disappointing #2 pick)

but gasol is a paint machine. thabeet needs to be much stronger and needs more experience before considering him a starter. Gasol may have lost 20-25 pounds over the offseason and it’s working wonders, but he is still too slow at the 4.

so you said alston or ridnour for the pg situation? you have anyone younger in mind? lol

Shooting for Ridnour and Alston is unrealistic? The Grizz do need a pg, who would they sign quincey?
Those are decent pg’s but I can name 15 better so I’m not sure how it’s unrealistic. It’s not like they threw out a CP3 trade saying Paul wants out so it makes perfect sense.
Maybe Sergio Rodriguez could get a shot, I liked him when he got to play in Portland. I don’t think you want a young pg on that team, they need a veteran somewhere.

they should trade him to the N.O with conley for posey and devin brown the contacts match up and they get rid of conley and they get posey in return. N.O. gets that all round player to pley with paul cause peja is gettin old, west shows up when he wants to, posey isnt what he was, and get rid of brown so they can develop marcus T. What you guys think?
