27th? This guy is arguably the ACC POY. He is the best player on the most talented team in the country. He is averaging 16 points, 7 assists, and 2 tos a game. That is a 3.37 to 1 ratio. He is shooting 49% from 3 and 55% from the floor. So he has answered the questions about his shot, and is developing a mid-range game. He has had several clutch performances this season against Miami, FSU, Duke, etc. He has left his heart out on the floor more times this season than the rest of his UNC career combined. It seems like he is getting no love from this site. Nevermind the fact that he is small. He plays much bigger than his 6’0″ stature indicates. Guys like Raymond Felton, TJ Ford, Chris Paul, DJ Augustin, Brandon Jennings, and Mike Conley all got lots of love from this site and are all about Lawson’s size. And I can say I have seen these guys (with the exception of Jennings) play in college and none of them were as strong as Lawson and the only one that IMHO had a higher basketball IQ was Chris Paul. I wonder why this site has him at 27 while as I look at other sites I see him at 13, 16, 16, 19, 11. So i must ask, what did Ty Lawson do to nbadraft.net?

Ty Lawson should be ranked that low bcause he is a product of a system. UNC is a running team that plats to Lawson’s strength. One He cant guard better players Jeff Teague and Tyrese Rice KiILT him in their game. He is small and he hasn’t shown point guard skills. But I think in a right system he could thrive or the right team like Atlanta or Pheonix.

If he is a product of the system why is he just now dominating? As far as his games against Tyrese Rice and Jeff Teague I am not going to deny that at all. Lawson played poorly those games and look at the result. Again it just shows how much Lawson means to this UNC team. Without him, they are just average. He is what makes them go. Last season Lawson against Rice wasn’t even close the game that Lawson was healthy. Lawson absoulutely embarrassed him. You will probably see him go up against one of the two in the ACC tourney. They are both really good friends and have kinda a rivalry against each other. That John Gilchrist guy from Maryland would make a mockery out of Raymond Felton whenever they went head to head and look at where they are now. Funny how the haters point out those two games and don’t even mention his games against Kallin Lucas, Tory Jackson, etc.

nbadraft.net messes up their mock draft pretty badly…Lawson will be a top-15 pick. Most likely a lottery pick. To the guy who said hes a product of the system and has no point guard skills…LOOK AT HIS ASSIST/TO RATIO AND TELL ME HE DOESNT HAVE PG SKILLS…I mean come on…He has a freaking 3.37 a/t ratio and he is playing on a team that pushes the ball like no other…

Ty Lawson stats’ speaks volumes in areas but the area people really care about he wispering. I could name a couple of great speakers that say it for themselves Stephon Currry and oh Lester Huson. I’ve read a lot of comments and their all talking around the stats. What’s his stats saying? He strong, cant get the ball from him or his assist to turnover ratio saying what for the NBA???

P.S. Is it because he in the history books already(quad-dbl) they want to talk about age? Div ! Ohio POY

I feel sorry for the team that waste a draft pick Lawson personally I think he is an outstanding college point but in the pros he wont have the same impact I can undestanded why nbadrat.net would have him so low. I mean look at the point gaurds in the league do you think Lawson could really hang. His lack of size will be an issue (he doesnt have the athletic ability to make up for his lack of size)

I can’t really see lawson being a successful point guard in a slower tempo where he has to faciliate the offense. He hasn’t shown the ablity to run the pick and roll, nor can I see him being efficent considering his shot isn’t deadly, so defenders will slack. Although his shot is improved, not to mention when the defense settles in on a half court game his ablity to finish at the rack is decreased because the defense can settle in. In order to be successful in the nba or a legitimate point, you gotta run a offense, I haven’t really been able to see that at carolina. Although, you can’t really take away his speed and ablity to push the ball like no other pg can in the ncaa right now.

Bigboom watch his game against Georgia Tech, he ran the offense to perfection and dominated the whole game while only scoring 4 points.
Billyk did you really just call Lawson’s athletic ability into question? Name one PG not named Jeff Teague that is head and shoulders more athletic in the NCAA. Good luck…

Im not questioning his skill its his pro potential im questioning. One he is too small and all as we both no he cant play defense.Yes Lawson makes UNC go because of his talent but that wont make him get drafted. If you look at all of the lottery picks pg excluding Augistin they are all 6’0 or over. The other I still don’t believe he is capable of handling the duties of a lottery point guard because he has to go up against players with more talent them him every night. Plus Raymond Felton is a horrible point guard its just that John Gilchrist had character concerns and he was a scorer rather than a who hum distributer with a ton of talent around him like Felton and Lawson.

Lawson a who hum distributer with a ton of talent around him? Lawson is averaging 16 ppg, 4 more than Felton ever averaged and has put his team on his back offensively several times this season. He is their second scoring option to Hansbrough this season. In terms of pure talent, he is UNC’s most talented player. And I don’t think it is that he can’t play defense, it’s that he doesn’t always focus on defense. He has the tools to be an awesome defender. And IMHO Lawson has much more pro potential than Felton and is better than Felton at the same stage of their careers. Yea I said it. Felton still can’t finish in traffic (a quality Lawson has), has a shot that is way too inconsistant.and doesn’t have Lawson’s decision making. Lawson averages 1/2 the turnovers Felton did at UNC. Lawson plays a bigger role offensively at UNC, shoots better, is relatively the same size, and a much better finisher than Felton and yet somehow Felton was always in the lottery with nbadraft.net, but Lawson isn’t. It seems to me like Lawson stole nbadraft.net’s lunch money or something.

I hate to disappoint you ncballer but Felton is a much stronger prospect than Lawson is right now. The problem with Lawson is that most of his layups are in transition which he won’t get in the NBA. It’s easy to look faster than everyone else in college but in the NBA he won’t get those easy transition lay ups that he gets now. Lawson has great straight away speed but it’s his lateral quickness that is poor and that’s why he has hard time playing defense. Felton on the other hand is relentless. The 2005 UNC team was solid defensively and alot of it had to do with Felton’s leadership and his contagious aggressiveness. If Lawson had even half of Felton’s desire on the defensive end he would be a lottery pick. But he doesn’t and that’s why he struggles defensively. Plus Felton is a better athlete than Lawson.

As far as finishing in traffic, I rarely see Lawson do this. He lays it up when he’s way ahead of the pack which is most of the time that he’s in transition.

Too short (5’10), no J, and no D. The NBA is a different monster. Lawson is barely a better pro prospect than Dee Brown was, let alone Ray Felton or Chris Paul.

Dj augustine was crazy overrated, but he was top 10, and Lawson is better, with what will probably be a deep tourney run to boost his stock. Other sites have him up higher, he definately is not a late first rounder he is in the teens somewhere. His shot is getting pretty deadly, he has developed a killer instinct if you watch him of late, hitting clutch threes and driving through half court stes I dont know what aiao is talkin about he doesnt watch the tarheels. He has his flaws granted, but he is shooting over 45 % from 3, leading the country in efficiency in the ken pom index. Duke, a top 10 team regardless how much everybody hates them, could not stop him. He beat Miami basically by Himself on the road when jack Mcclinton went nuts. He was even the most effective defender on him, except they used bobby frasor most of the time. I don’t see why he can’t start, I see him as bieng way better than Anthony Carter at the worst.

i was born in chapel hill, grew up huge tarheels fan, but your just wrong bout somethin. Tyrese Rice put 40 up on Lawson last year, you said Lawson owned him. He has a rep for gettin burned by top competition, but I read on Draftexpress that He absolutely embarrassed Lester Hudson last year in orlando pre draft. He made another prospect Kalin Lucas literally cry this year when he shut him down on ESPN. He is a player, pretty close to 6 feet id say. He wont be playing the same huge minutes in the NBA, he will be able to play defense.

Some of these comments are crazy… Not to kill this topic all together but the haters need to realize that Lawson went to the pre-draft camp last year and did very well. He was the best guard on the floor in the games that he played in and measured athletically in the upper half of the players at his position (vertical, shuttle drill, ect). He had a first round spot locked up last year and only came back to school because he got popped for a DUI right after the camp. With the way he has stepped his game up of late I think he should grab a spot in the middle of the 1st round maybe right outside the lottery. You can’t judge a guy off of one or two bad games, yeah Teague gave him the bizz in that win, but Teague got done in by Iman Shumpert of GT, so by proxy that should make Shumpert the beast of the ACC points right? (not). The NBA is an up tempo, open league even the half court teams are up tempo by college comparison so lawson will fit in the league

canesboy6, that was Lawsons first game back from his injury last season. If you read my previous post it said when he was healthy which was this game:
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/boxscore?gameId=280310153 most of Rice’s points were in garbage time too. I don’t necessarily disagree with you guys and totally agree that his desire to play defense will either make or break his nba career, what I am disputing is his draft stock on this site when similar players in the past (most notably Mike Conley and DJ Augustin) were both projected lottery picks and Lawson is somehow a late first rounder.

Being able to hit clutch shots doesn’t really translate to the NBA, ask Acie Law that. Similarly, a DUI isn’t really a make or breaker either…I believe JJ Reddick had a DWI charge right before the draft and he was still a lottery pick. Every mock draft I see has Lawson going from 13th-27th so it is what it is. I didn’t mean to have a Ty Lawson bash thread because obviously alot of you guys are Tar Heel fans and you take it to heart.

I am a heels fan and a duke hater but my support of lawson is strictly as an evaluater of talent and I feel with his body of work taken into context he is the best point prospect in this years draft. I think of jameer nelson his last year, even though he did mad work that season once draft time came around he stopped getting the love and everyone pushed the two high schoolers ahead of him (Livingston and Telfair). Now given the chance to play and improve his game he made himself into an all star (before the shoulder injury). I think Lawson is in that same boat and has the potential to do the same thing. As far as the DUI thing it wasnt a deal breaker but it was a HUGE factor in his returning to school. Reddick got popped right after the season so he had more contrition time.

PG’s I would take before Lawson in this upcoming draft, *note some may not be coming out*, Ricky Rubio, Brandon Jennings, Jeff Teague, Eric Maynor, Patrick Mills, A.J. Price, Steph Curry, Johnny Flynn, Nick Calathes, and possibly Tyrese Rice….and I probably missed a few. That’s ten PG’s if they all come out that will probably have more productive careers that Lawson. That’s basically what Lawson’s done to nbadraft.net.

If anyone truly believes this then u need to get ur head checked out. Im sick of people hating on Tyler Hansbrough. He is by far the best player in the ACC and top three in the whole damn country. However Lawson is pretty damn good, though I question his NBA potential. Yes, he’s rediculously fast, but I don’t know I just don’t see his game translating all that well in the pros, but at worst he will be a solid backup point guard

He should be at list a lottery pick because some times like him but his size but i think he’ll be a guy that everyone says i should of picked him. Teague is better but he Lawson’s speed and leadership sets him apart so teams should take a chance on him.
