It has been a popular pick on a lot of mocks for a while now, and I’ve always been confused as to why this is the case.  I didn’t see how WCS and Cousins could coexist, with them both being centres.  For this reason I don’t have Cauley-Stein going at #6 on my mock draft.

My view has become more open to this pick upon learning that Cousins wants the Kings to draft Cauley-Stein (via Ryen Russillo’s twitter).  Obviously the Kings organisation will at the very least listen to what their star player wants.

The problem is: how would the Kings big man rotation work if they draft WCS?  Obviously you don’t want an elite defensive talent languishing on the bench, so does Cousins play power forward like Russillo implies that he wants to do?  I don’t see any other option where the Kings keep both players.

How do you guys think the Kings lineup will look if they draft Willie Cauley-Stein?

was the best big man P and R defender in college last year. At his age, he can easily keep up defensively with NBA PF. Basically which ever front court player on the opposing team is more active will get WCS as a defender.

Plus he is a shot blocker, which Cousins would benefit playing with.

I like WCS due to his defensive potential and think defensively it works well, offensively is where they will have problems.

That is why I like Porzingis as he can be a shot-blocker on D and spread the floor offensively, leaving Cousins room to work in the post and limiting opposing teams ability to double-team.

Comparing the two and the mind set of the Kings are they willing to wait on Porzingis to develop? I think WCS is far more ready to contribute immediately and Kings look like a team that want to win now so that’ll factor in.

I can understand the WCS pick, but Porzingis just makes more sense because of his skill set.

I think in George Karl’s sytem WCS can have some success at the 4 position offensively. I mean look what Karl did with Faired in Denver. I don’t see that much of a difference between Faried & WCS offensively and I think WCS can be a great defender in this league and a great rim protector which is something Sacramento needs desperately. That’s why I have Sacramento taking WCS in my mock.

I disagree completely, I think wcs and cousins compliment each other perfectly. Wcs is a fantastic defender who can guard the pf while cousins is slower and takes the slower/weaker offensive player on the opposition. Defensively they fit great. Offensively, cousin can play down low or shoot from 20 feet and stretch the floor. Wcs cant play offense regardless of what team he goes to so what’s better then pairing him alongside one of the elite offensive bigs so wcs can simply roam around looking for offensive rebound opportunities? Plus wcs can run the court to help with kings transition offense and defense sine cousins doesn’t provide that. I’m honestly shocked anyone would question how these two fit together, I think wcs is overrated but just fits alongside cousins so much the Kings should take him at 6.

Offensively, Cousins is so versatile though that he can play power forward as a high post, face-up driver/screener/passer or as a center down-low where he’ll punish you with his strength and then you can have Cauley-Stein trying to crash the boards or cut to the rim for a pass if he’s in the high post while Cousins is down-low.

Then, defensively Willie Cauley-Stein can definately play both big man positions. Cousins is solid as a rim protector with 47% Opponent’s FG% at the rim but he’s also the league leader in charges at 34 to draw turnovers.

Some really good points there.  I think I may change my mock’s 6th pick now.

I like the fit with porzingis alongside cousins better than WCS. However, porzingis might not be available, I think defense and rim protection is a huge priority for them, which is why I believe they may take WCS.

Also, you have to remember that there is still a possibility that cousins gets traded.
