I am yet to see a Kansas game this year but how does Wayne Selden look ? I know he was highly regarded coming out of high school.

Just checking his stats – 16ppg – 57%fg – 60% 3’s. They have played UCLA, Mich St, and Vanderbilt.

Selden has had an up and down year so far (mostly up). He has played well enough to be a great college player, but I’m still not sold on him coming out for the NBA draft this year.

He has had a few moments where he has disappeared in games, but has also completly taken over for KU in others (Maui and end of first half against Oregon St).

He is shooting very well as you can see by the numbers you posted, but all of his 3 pt attempts are on catch and shoot plays. He does not shoot 3’s or long jumpers off the dribble, which means he probably will translate to a 3 and D player in the NBA. I don’t see him being able to create against NBA defenders.

Overall, I haven’t seen any skills that have been improved from last year. The main difference is he is being more aggressive this year. I still think he should stay another year at KU, but I think he is a 2nd rounder no matter which year he comes out.

Michigan State is probably the only game he has really disappeared in which was the  2nd game of the year. The Harvard game was his only other non-double digit game and that’s because he sat on the bench in foul trouble most of the game.

Most of scoring is catch and shoot. I definitely wouldn’t expect him to be a shot creator although he has shown a solid pull-up mid-range jumper and is having more success finishing at the rim. I do think he’ll have a lot more success with the more open style of the NBA vs college where it’s hard to get spacing.

As mentioned earlier the key is him staying aggressive. When he struggles early he had a tendency fade into the background. His last game vs Oregon State him and the team didn’t have the best start. Late in the 1st half with KU down 14 he got a look on his face that seemed to say that there was no way he was going to let KU lose. I proceeded to knock down a 3 and make a couple more plays and then play outstanding in the 2nd half. Those are the signs you wanna see in the maturation of a player.

I like him as a player. I think he can be a great role player in a good team.

He’s got a lot of the same attributes that Wes Matthews showed at his time at Marquette- spot up shooting, NBA ready physique, above average albeit not elite athleticism, and a lack of being able to create consistent offense for himself. He also that same straight line drive ability that Matthews was so good at in his 4 years of college ball. Ultimately right now I think the thing that distinguishes them however is the fire on the defensive side of the ball- and thats what got Matthews onto a roster after he went undrafted. Selden needs to get a fire lit under his rearend on that side of ball if he wants to get legitimate looks from teams in the first round, because right now, he is way too often lackadaisical on defense.

Good comparison, I was thinking the same thing. Its crazythese top prospects are seen as "underachievers" if they don’t become top picks after one year but if they enter the draft and never play they’re called stupid.
