He finished top 3 in MVP voting 3 times, won league mvp, was all nba 1st team 5 times and 2nd team twice. Won 2 allstar game MVP honors including 1983 in LA. Led the league in PER once, led in win shares per 48 minutes twice.

Many try to say he was exposed when he came to the league, but that was not the case.

Bobby Jones is the most underrated ex UNC player as well.  Everybody talks about Ford , Jordan , Perkins , Worthy , and so many forget how good of a player Jones was and the guy never took a shot outside of 15 feet.  Probably explains his high fg% for a perimeter player while in the league.

he is probably top20 alltime what do you want? Bird and Magic still were the men at the time..and overall from mid 80s it started the best basketball in the history until lets say 2005..

     Great defender.

I am old enough that I actually watched Erving play in the ABA, lived in Norfolk when he was a Squire then Net. he was unbelievable then…. He probably a top 5 sf of all time in my mind. Bird and James ahead of him for sure.

I Would Put Bird ahead of Dr J but thats the only SF I have LBJ #3 on my list but, if your counting just his NBA numbers and acheivments then yea LBJ is ahead of him but wat the Doc did for his career is amazing 24ppg  8.5rpg  4apg  2spg 1.5bpg and shooting over 50% for his career 4 mvp (3 aba 1 nba) 3 championships (2 aba 1 nba) over 15 AS appearances…and not to include how he revolutionize the game!

LBJ can pass him but i wouldnt say he already has!

When I was in high school, I got really into basketball history and I watched a lot of Erving highlights and that "NBA’s Greatest Games" show they used to play on ESPN and I do think he is probably a tad underrated today, but not a lot.  Everyone knows he is a great, dunked from the FT line, but I think his defensive ability isn’t remembered like it should be.

He was also the inspiration for my wearing high socks when I played ball in HS. haha.

I dont think he was ever underrated, becuz at 1 point during the late 70’s & early 80’s he was considered the best player in the nba and he was the face of the entire league…As great as he was in the nba, people never got to see him at his best, that was when he was in the ABA…

And i think thats what separates him from Bird ,and in my book gives the slight to Bird as the best small forward ever and gives Lebron the chance to be thecome the best ever..Becuz we got a chance to see them from the start…

But I deeply believe,if Erving had started his career in the nba instead of the ABA..He wouldn’t have any competition as the best small forward ever….

Like Lebron, he was an explosive athlete, strong, versatile, could handle the ball and sometimes played power forward..And got up & down the court as fast as any guard…..Doc was an underrated defender, passer, rebounder and 1 of the most Clutch player in league history….

The guy revolutionized the game..And in my book still deserves a spot among the Top 10 players ever..But becuz we didnt see him at his truly best..He’s 3rd best small forward to play the game…

He’s probably the best player on NBA Live 2005, in my opinion.

Watching Nick Collison at Kansas i felt he could become as good as Bobby Jones, not only does he resemble Jones…But he did the little things that dont show up in boxscores, but it helps teams win…Sometimes when he gets hot,it shows, but not on a consistent basis….There were moments during the finals, that he played better then Ibarka & Perkins….

I always thought Andrew Toney was very under rated/ under appreciated as well.

I love watching Andrew Toney, but he didnt do anything rememorable…I’ll put him in the same class as guys like Mitch Richmond… Guys that were solid when they played but years later,if you’re not a hardcore follower of basketball, you dont remember anything they did..They might’ve been better then Reggie Miller, but you can remember all the clutch shots Reggie took….

its kinda ridiculous how he could palm the ball like a tennis ball. i just searched up how big his hands were. answers i found were 11 to 13 inches from wrist to fingertip.
