Word seeped out today that there’s an alleged “arms race” between a major online publication (think ESPN, Yahoo!, etc) and the New York Times to grab a final piece of evidence which will solidify a report that John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins are involved in some sort of violation-worthy shenanigans in Kentucky.

That’s according to LEO Weekly’s “The Score,” where sources (in the upmost meta sense, because they are sources outing a bunch of journalists who are in the process of using sources to out basketball players, who may be outed before the … *brain explodes*) indicate that someone in the media is close to exposing a scandal involving the UK basketball program.

From LEO’s “Seedy K” (whose name could only be less reputable if it were “Shady Ball”):

I am told, though I have no personal knowledge nor evidence myself whatsoever, that the investigations concern cash money and, perhaps, real estate.

Now, before we go getting all fuzzy in the lions over the possibility of Coach Cal getting his comeuppance (because we don’t do rampant rumor-mongering here, contrary to what some Tar Heel fans will tell you), there’s a number of things to note/question about Seedy’s article.

First, he mentions that “none of the Tobacco Road schools” were interested in Wall coming out of high school. That’s just patently false. Secondly, the way in which Seedy discusses “some transgressions by UK frosh” Wall and Cousins — the phrasing of the alleged attempt to uncover the transgressions makes it seem like Wall and Cousins did something wrong, though the illegal action at hand would — one would think — actually involve a booster or a coach.

In other words, disclaimers ahoy (and whatnot) for this gossip — but if something DOES happen, and someone from a major outlet drops an allegation bomb on the Wildcats’ program between now and May 2, you’ll see some very interesting movement in the basketball recruiting world, particularly with respect to C.J. Leslie, who has yet to commit (and who would, one has to think, be hard-pressed to commit to a school that might be under NCAA investigation).

interesting. It would not surprise me if coach cal has something shady going on under his watch. It happened at both UMass and Memphis.

wouldnt suprise me. rumors were that both players were already breaking ncaa rules back in hs(not including walls leagal trouble) is anyone really suprised

I will give Coach Cal the benefit of the doubt for the whole Marcus Camby incident at UMass because it was before my time, and it seemed he may have actually not known about it.
For Memphis that was on him, and for any rules broken at UK is on him as well. If he is found of wrongdoing I want him to serve a suspension for coaching. He is a reason why the college game lacks integrity. Now I am not going to get started about the NCAA, they’re bad as well, but the coaches don’t get a free pass for what the NCAA does.

I sometimes wonder if Cal recruited by the rules how good of a coach he would be, or would he get out coached a good amount?? I think he would be an above average coach, but would lose to great coaches with great strategies.

if there is proof then coach cal should get in trouble. untill then and even after then the blame needs to go to who is the most responsible. that would be the players. they know the rules just like the coachs/schools do. people tend to forget the players are the ones breaking the rules and then leaving the school on probabtion while they go make millions and not caring. not even a “im sorry”

Quincey, I agree with you about the players, we do forget about them. Though, take for example the whole Derrick Rose thing with the SAT, it is believed that Calipari hired someone to make arrangements for someone else to take the SAT for Rose. While it is Rose’s fault for not getting better grades in high school to enable him to be able to be eligible with a lower SAT score, it is Calipari’s fault big time for allowing that to happen.

Still why would Calipari recruit a guy with that type of record, and save himself the trouble. I think he knows what he is doing is wrong, but he wants to win even if he’ll have to cheat.

he wasnt the only one recruiting him. coaches tend to look past a players troubles if they are good enough

Yeah that of course is true, but Derrick Rose was a top prospect coming out of high school, why would anyone who can go anywhere they want go to play in Conference USA??? That’s where I wonder about Calipari and his ethics. I am not saying Big East coaches are clean, but to it’s an easier pitch to make to get recruits to play for you if you coach at a school that plays in a major conference.

its all about who can a. get you to the nba , b play alot of games on tv. and c let you run a free willing offense. coach cal did all that so why not?..and on top of that there out of conference schedule was niceeeeeee. tv time is very very big for recruits

You’re right, though I hate coach cal for numerous reasons. I also believe he is at best an above-average coach. I don’t think he wins based off coaching rather the talent he has. He runs that offense because he has the personnel to run it, he he didn’t have the personnel and had to use the motion offense I think he would struggle as a coach.
