SmooveKRYPTParticipantNot sure if anyone just caught his press conference on NBA TV, but here’s a breakdown of what he said went into the process of dealing Boogie and why that deal.
First was the statement that came with the official trade announcement. Key quote was "Winning begins with culture and character matters" Already sending all the blame Cousins’ way.
Then 15 mins later the press conference came. He spoke more and more about changing and building the culture and this trade being the start of that. Next he was asked about why this deal. He says "it was the best time and the best offer"
BUT IT GETS BETTER. A reporter keeps pressing and asks why was now the best time; why not wait up until the deadline and create a bidding war to build up the return or until the summer. He says "He would lose more value waiting. We had a better offer for him 2 days ago!!!" He also said he went to New Orleans for all-star with the understanding that he was trading him.
So many questions, I don’t even know where to start…..
Here’s a snippet of the press conf: twitter.com/NBATV/status/833779937785942016

SeattleSuperChronicsParticipantIf I’m the kings GM….I hold on to Cousins till the trade deadline next year…after the skills challenge i saw davis and cousins cheesing extra hard amongst joker and pirzingus. This is Kwame for Pau territory. I’m sure boogies agent had a lot to do with this deal. Must of told a lot of teams he won’t resign There

Robb_CParticipantCousins wanted the extra 20 Mil if he signed the extension with the Kings, Chronic you are right Cousins Agent was pretty much bluffing telling teams he wouldn’t resign which left teams gunshy on pulling the deal.. The Pelicans called the bluff and gave away pieces they wont miss..
Cousins could have made that extra 20 mil in a larger market with endorsements alone.. Hes not the most marketable guy in the league, but the trade could have been a fresh start for his marketable presence.

SubZeroParticipantI seem to remember criticizing him about a year ago and getting negged for it with a bunch of people coming to his defense. Not sure what the defense for him would be now

Robb_CParticipantDivac isnt to blame here.. He wanted to pull the trigger on a trade for awhile.. The Owner of the team Ranadive is a complete d**khead and shot down offer after offer. Ranadive wanted to keep Cousins in Sacramento as long as possible so ticket sales dont fall (the team has decent attendance)..while not having to pay him an extra 20 mil on that supermax deal..
Ranadive is a toxic owner..

OhCanada-ParticipantI wonder what deal he had 2 days ago and what blew it up. I bet Cousins rubbed someone the wrong way.
Divac likely would have pulled the trigger on that deal but it seems the owner wanted to have the Kings represented during the Allstar break. Just to bench Cousins? Terrible representation. Perhaps teams didn’t want a media frenzy going after Cousins for a weekend. I wonder how well he would’ve handled that.
It’s funny because Cousins has already started on the wrong foot with Nola fans by saying they stole Mardi Gras from Bama. This guy needs a life coach.

SmooveKRYPTParticipantI’ve been trying to find out what team offered the better deal 2 days ago. Whoever it was, they pulled it off the table, he said it "disappeared" after a day or 2. Divac also said, when asked what he learned from the process of trading Cousins was "not to trust agents" insinuating that Boogie’s agents scared teams off and killed deals by saying he wouldn’t re-sign with them long-term.
Woj was on SiriusXM and said the final 2 offers they submitted to ownership were from the Lakers and Pelicans. Considering the Lakers wouldn’t offer Ingram, their final offer was likely built around Randle and Calderon’s expiring deal.
I also saw Ric Bucher (not sure how credible he is anymore) report that it came down to the Pels because Boston was too focused on going after Jimmy Butler and didn’t make a serious offer, Phoenix wanted SAC to take back Brandon Knight, and Orlando could’ve had him but backed out.
Those scenarios are very believable to me. Phoenix was the first report that came out a few weeks ago about an offer for Boogie. It was around Alex Len, TJ Warren and a 1st rounder. Not sure why they tried to include Knight when they’re so far under the cap they didn’t need to include him. Onto Orlando…were they the better offer that went away? That would make a lot of sense. Vucevic is a double double big man of Montenegran descent – Divac connection, Aaron Gordon is from NorCal and a quality young player with high work ethic and good character (all the things Vlade said he was looking for) Elfrid Payton is someone the Kings liked a lot the year he came out before Vivek made them draft Stauskus, also Jeff Green’s big expiring contract. If ORL offered one of Gordon/Payton + Vuc and a 1st…that’s definitely a better deal, and one I believe they would offer with Hennigan’s track record and hot seat status.

Robb_CParticipantIf Divac said that " you cant trust agents" he just buried himself in the future with that comment.. Part of being a successful GM is building relationships with Agents.. I can tell you first hand ive been in the presence of GMs and Agencies representatives its all about building relationships not alienating them

llperezI’ve heard agents say in the past how they were upset with certain teams and it would impact future dealings with them and they would try and lead future clients away from said team, but I’ve yet to hear any substantial evidence of an agent holding true on this. At the end of the day if I’m a player looking to sign a deal or get drafted or be traded I don’t want an agent that interfered with my best interests due to their own interests and experiences with other clients. I’ve heard rookies this past draft refused to workout for kings but I don’t know how much of that was agent relationship vs the kings just sucking and being a ahitty organiz at the moment.

Robb_CParticipantI know a player who dropped his Agent because his Agent had a bad reputation with certain teams which limited his potential deals.. It happens a lot, why do you think former agents are getting GM jobs? Theyve built relationships in that circle

OhCanada-ParticipantNone of that matters. Money talks. Nobody is signing to Sacramento on a deal they could get elsewhere for a team fit lol. But they will sign for that big contract anywhere.

r377Participantprevious deals that were turned down by the Kings
Brandon Knight, TJ Warren, Alex Len, multiple first-round picks from the Suns
Drummond, a first rounder and Hillard.
Twitter feed / report—-
Several agents have already told me that SAC has lost all credibility after assuring Cousins he would not be traded this year & extended.0- Posted on: Tue, 02/21/2017 - 7:05am #1092588

OhCanada-ParticipantWe don’t know who offered that deal and who declined. Also they tried to make it work with Boogie but he got more immature ad his game developed. His antics just got worse and worse.
As for the promise I don’t think that ruins thier credibility when your dealing with an enigma. Cousins didn’t follow the unwritten rules. He would probably tell the media if they told him he’s on the block which would kill his value which was already killed. I’m sure every GM in the league knew he was on the block and the Kings had been calling teams for a while.
This kind of reminds me of when the Raptors were trading Carter after he quit on the team. They got nothing in return and everyone got mad at Babcock for that but what’s he supposed to do? There was no value and every day you don’t trade him as a day closer to contract negotiations which decreases his value. Sooner or later you gotta move on.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipant"Key quote was ‘Winning begins with culture and character matters’ Already sending all the blame Cousins’ way." Seven years, six coaches, three GMs, zero .500 seasons (or 34 win seasons for that matter), picks after picks after picks… at some point the only constant is Cousins.
"A reporter keeps pressing and asks why was now the best time; why not wait up until the deadline and create a bidding war to build up the return or until the summer. He says ‘He would lose more value waiting. We had a better offer for him 2 days ago!!!’" There is an easy case for Vlade being right about the timing of future draft picks being more valuable now than in the summer because of greater certainty of a pick’s range. If you are embarking on a rebuild and deal Cousins to a contender, what are multiple 20-30 picks worth? As for what recent offers may have been, we don’t know. It could have been something actually better, or it could be a GM taking a subtle swipe at his owner. We just don’t know.
