Has there ever been a draft lottery class that’s been snake-bit by injuries like the top 5 picks from 2014?

Now that it’s 100% confirmed that Dante Exum has a torn ACL, he’s added to the unfortunate list of fellow top 5 picks Jabari (torn ACL) Joel Embiid (Navicular fracture) Aaron Gordon (Foot fracture) and now Exum. It’s a damn shame. Here’s to hoping modern science and therapy can get these young guys back on the court and producing at a high level soon!

I wouldn’t just limit it to the top 5.  Randle played broke his leg in his first game.  Smart had a really bad ankle sprain that he says he only felt was healthy this offseason.  Now Smart has 2 dislocated fingers from playing in summer league.  McDermott had a meniscus tear and McGary had a fractured foot as well.

Really unfortunate for so many young players to go down with injuries from this draft class.

Yeah somehow the wolves got two of the healthiest players in the top 13. Lavine only missed 5 games and wiggins didn’t miss any. For all the injury problems they have had it looks good now. Kevin love, ricky rubio,  pekovic, and martin have all had injury problems while on the twolves, combine that with all the draft busts and it hasn’t been a good time until now to be a twolves fan.

Yeah I think people were stupid to write off the ridiculous talent of this draft class when we haven’t really seen it healthy ywet.

As an Aussie, really sucks about Exum, but to be honest he probably should have spent a year in college adjusting to a higher level before jumping straight from Aus high school ball.

yeah i think he was gonna go to college but then the hype around him exploded and when you are projected top 5 you would be stupid to spend a year where he might get exposed or injured and never make it to nba

This is what happens when you have players who aren’t physically mature enough to be in the league.

Although people give you negatives I might agree with your point. Most injuries look like unfortunate events, but these things happen when players are not physically mature. When your muscles are not strong enough, more pressure comes on the ligaments etc., increasing the risks. So rather than giving you a negative I agree with you… 🙂

Thats crap, Exum got hurt during the offseason, and was not related to whether he is physically NBA ready.

Dozens of players have jumped from high school to the pros and most never suffered any major injuries related to their youth.

It all comes down to luck.

The example you point out (Exum) would be one of the prime examples of my reasoning. If your muscles are not strong enough there are two factors that increase the risk of getting injured. One is that you will start to compensate using other muscles/part of your body in unnatural ways, which resulting in more wear on your body and potential injuries over time. A second, and related, point is that if your muscles are not strong enough more pressure will be put on your ligaments and tendons. As a result, these ligaments and tendons suffer more, which over time results in less support in case something goes wrong, and perhaps long-term damage to crucial parts of your joints.

Basically in every sport you see examples of athletes that are forced into high-level competition (above their age) before their have build up sufficient strength, who more often than not end up leaving high-level competition before they reach their peak. Part of the reason is luck indeed, but I do believe that this luck is partly a result of athletes that put too much wear on their body at a too young age.

If injuries continue to set back all these guys careers then we may very well be witnessing the biggest ‘what if’ drafts of all time. Imagine if they cannot get over these injuries and all turn out to have sub-pub NBA careers then in 10 years we could very well be back here on this forum saying thing like ‘only if Embiid didn’t get injured he was hyped to be the next great big man in the league… he could have been as good as Duncan’ or ‘Parker had Melon written all over him, only if he could have stayed healthy’.

Will be interesting to see how all the guys can come back from injuries.
