dudo670ParticipantI’ve been reading the mock drafts on here for years but finally made an account for the forums. Don’t sleep on the little guys in the draft. Both Ulis and Felder are true point guards with court vision and good ball-handling skills. It’s not like we’re talking about guys who are natural two guards in a 5’9" body; both of these guys can run the point. Both of these guys have very nice looking jumpers and their free throw percentages represent that. Both of these guys are tough defenders (Ulis more-so than Felder); Ulis was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year and while Oakland was not a great defensive team, Felder averaged 2.1 steals per 40 minutes in man-to-man defense, showing he’s athletic enough to create turnovers in college and thus can probably defend well enough in the NBA. I would take Ulis in front of Demetrius Jackson (who is not a good enough ball-handler to be a top tier point guard) and possibly Wade Baldwin (who I think is overrated by the analytics community; his tape does not back up a lottery selection in my opinion). I’m not sure where I would take Felder but certainly mid second round. What do folks on here think of Ulis and Felder?

BleedGreen808ParticipantThe biggest concern I have with Ulis is his weight as he was measured at only 149lbs at the combine. Besides that I really like his game as a floor general with great leadership qualities. As of right now I have Ulis as a late 1st and Felder as mid-second.

clw5382ParticipantI really like Felder, his frame and athleticism is much closer to Thomas than Ulis. If Felder played for a major D1 school he would definitely be a 1st rounder. I also think his jump shot is better than Ulis. Ulis is a legit PG but I have the same questions about his small frame.

BleedGreen808ParticipantI think IT’s success this season helps Felder’s draft stock. He has a better frame and more athleticism than Ulis while also being better defensively than IT is. He was getting after Cat Barber yesterday in the 5 on 5.

nill650Participantulis and felder will make decent back ups for teams with above average defenders in the backcourt with them, otherwise forget it. just to small and liabilities on defense. Ulis is arguably the best true pg in the draft but it doesnt mean much really. wrong weight class

dudo670ParticipantI agree about Ulis’s weight being a concern, 149 is tiny. However, most guys who are hurt by size are guys that are 6’2" but with the skillset of a shooting guard, or 6’7" with the skillset of a power forward. Both Ulis and Felder have point guard skill sets. Felder at least has the better build, but I think too many people judge players based on their measurements and box score stats. Sure, both Ulis and Felder had very productive seasons, but there is also a mental part of the game. Both Ulis and Felder are competitive as hell and play with a fire. There are tons of guys every year who look great in the measurables and the box score but just don’t play the game well (this year that player is Wade Baldwin to me). I would take Ulis in the top 20 despite the weight concerns. He might not have a long career, but if I’m a GM I can’t draft too long term or I’ll be fired before I can see it work out (see Sam Hinkie) and even if Ulis has a shorter career due to his weight, he could be fairly productive when he plays.
To nill650, I disagree about them being a liability on defense. They will be liabilities in two areas: switching and down low. How many point guards post up? Not many, so I don’t see the down low issue being too much of an issue. Man to man defense is more about foot speed, discipline, and effort than almost anything else. Both guys have the lateral footspeed, so it just comes down to the discipline and effort which show up for both players on tape. Most likely, neither guy will be a plus defender due to size limitations, but both can be good enough defenders to let their offensive strengths show.

nill650Participantpoint taken…
and for both of these prospects the skill level should get them drafted late first early second.
However there is just too much talent at the pro level that is better equiped physically to not even be a minor concern or as i originaly said liability.
I will take Ulis at the point running an offense any day over half the starting pg’s in the nba, unfortunately I would’nt count on him to defend at a pro level any of those same guards he is better at running the floor than, and for that I do not see him being a starter.

daggers818ParticipantIt’s great to see the success of the Celtic’s Isaiah Thomas and hope that he will help open some GM’s eyes to the skills of someone like Felder who I think has a real chance to carve out a role and be a bench sparkplug in the NBA.
