Finally got a chance to watch this guy play.  I only got to see about the last 12 minutes or so.  I didn’t even know it was on TV, I was just flipping channels & came across it.

I really felt like I was watching a younger, slightly taller, slighty longer version of Jarvis Varnado haha. It is just something about their build with those long arms.  They play similar on the defensive end.

Whiteside doesn’t give up easy buckets.  You could tell UAB was worried about penetrating in the lane.  He even runs out to contest jumpshots.  The guy really tries & puts energy on the defensive end.  He looked very solid also as a help side defender.

Offensively the whole time Whiteside was kinda quiet. He did post up a couple times & Marshall definitely feeds him the ball in the post some.  He got fouled & shot a few free throws. The other shot he turned to his left shoulder & shot a hook shot (missed).

Granted this really doesn’t mean much because Whiteside probably only played 6 minutes out of those 12 I watched, he got 4 fouls & had to sit for a little bit.  From the limited time I saw though he looked solid but I’ve got to see more.  I’ll go ahead & say it though….lottery pick 2010.  Too much length, too much size, too much upside/potential.  At worst you are going to get a defensive presence.  This guy is raw but he isn’t as raw as somebody like Thabeet.

    Finally Gator….

I said before- He can go high as 2. Whiteside has limitless potential. I believe he can be a Andrew Bynum type from what I seen…

Good summary…He’s someone I have to see play, but from what I have seen he seems like a DeAndre Jordan type.

Also, UAB has that Elijah Milsap kid who’s been getting some recognition lately..

Iggy- yeah the whole time I was watching I didn’t even notice Milsap.  He didn’t do anything.

Some small guard for UAB (Johnson) hit the game winning shot.  He actually shot a high floater off the glass over Whiteside.  Whiteside could’ve blocked it I think but the coach probably told him not to foul.  Plus he had 4 fouls & the game could’ve gone to overtime.  The little guy for UAB made a very tough shot.

I watched Varnado earlier today too.  Miss St. @ Alabama.  Obviously Varnado is a great shot blocker but close to the basket one on one defending JaMychal Green he was getting worked for the most part.  Green muscled his way to the rim at will & either made a layup or got fouled.

Whiteside & Varnado are going to have trouble guarding the shorter/physical bigs in the NBA.  Kind of like how Blair always gave Thabeet trouble.

He is either the next Bynum or the next Patrick O’Bryant. Do you really want to possibly take Patrick O’Bryant with the 2nd overall pick?

However he does have a great work ethic and does try hard on defence, if he busts it won’t be from a lack of effort.

He played a suspect game against UNC. I’m not sold on this dude. I like his upside but I’ve seen it before. He’s not fooling no one, going to the weakest conference known to man.

Anytime you have a player for whom 4 blocks is below average, I think you have to like his skills. 5.4 block is 25.4 mins is absolutely absurd. He’s put on at least 20 pounds since high school and his dad was an NFL DE, so I wouldn’t worry about him putting on weight. If he can get to ~250, this guy could be a defensive game changer. Of course he has plenty to work on, but from the aspect of raw skills, and the things you cant teach (7’0″ with a 7’6″ wingspan), he’s a lottery lock. GM’s dont pass on what talented, mobile 7 footers can do, especially ones that average 5 blocks a game.

seecocoaball-  Conference USA really isn’t that weak of a conference.  It definitely isn’t the weakest conference like you said.

mkadoza- exactly.  key word you said was "mobile".  This guy isn’t a 7 foot stiff standing still in the post.  Whiteside is very agile & very active. I didn’t know his dad was a DE…that shows he has quality genes.

I can’t wait to see Whiteside go one on one VS. Jerome Jordan (Tulsa) on Feb. 3rd.  I hope that game is on TV.

When Marshall plays UTEP that will be a key game to watch also.  I would like to see how Whiteside guards shorter tougher physical players like Derrick Character.

Plus im surprised noone mentioned he played WVU last week and had a really good game.

    I believe it was 18 points-8 rebounds-3 blocks.

Not sure if you all get channel CSS (Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast) but they are showing the UAB @ Marshall game again.  There is about 10 minutes left in the game.  I’ve been watching it again.

Whiteside can get well above the rim as he soars for rebounds.  ha You would expect that from somebody with his length/size though.

Whiteside also shot a long jumper (almost 3 point range), he missed BUT the form on his shot looked solid. I think with hard work & proper teaching he can develop a very nice offensive game to compliment his stellar defensive abilities.  He shows good form & touch on his free throw shooting too.  I don’t see any reason why he can’t eventually be a 70% free throw shooter.

He shows pretty good footwork in the post too.  He definitely isn’t as raw as most think.

I don’t know why big name schools didn’t go after this guy harder.

Whiteside has more offensive skills now than DeAndre Jordan did as a Freshman at Texas A&M.

Marshall has about 3 lanky big men.  They also have Chris Lutz (transfer from Purdue) who is a real good shooter.  Overall Marshall has a descent team.  They can give Memphis, Houston, UTEP, & Tulsa a run for their money in the Conference USA.  Though I still think Tulsa will win the conference.
