TT was drafted fourth a few years ago ahead of guys like Jonas V, Klay Thompson, the Marcus twins and Jimmy Butler, but hasn’t been all that great. He was allright his first few years and has seemed to reach his potential, which is a great energy guy, great offensive rebounder but not much of an offensive weapon and not too great on defense either, and only a 65% FT shooter.

Well anyways, the Cavs got one of the better players in the league at his position locked up for a long time so TT didnt play too much and was just alright. Then when K-love was injured in the playoffs, TT did a good job filling in for him, I think because Lebron works real well with players like him. So now he rejectd a 5 year 80 mil ( 16$ mil per year) contract saying he wants to get the max contract.

As a Cavs fan I really hope they dont bite and let him play out this year as a contract year and see what he can get in free agency. I dont think any team would want him to be even the 3th best player on their team, why pay him that much?

What do you guys think about TT’s decisions and what should the Cavs do?

The Cavs are right to hold firm on their offer, but Thompson is probably also correct to look for the max. The free agent crop next summer is pretty weak (particularly relative to the amount of cap space available), so someone will likely overpay for Thompson. Tristan only really fits teams who have bigs that can shoot and protect the rim, which is a pretty slim list. The Cavs you honestly get 70% of Thompson’s production from somebody like Ian Mahinmi.

 You gotta wonder if he would’ve accepted the offer if K.Love didn’t re-sign. Personally I just don’t think he wants to be a back up so he chose money + minutes over money + winning.  Cavs don’t need him anyways.  Bringing back Mozgov next offseason is the more pivotal move long term.

 I would’t be surprised to see him in Toronto next year. They would pay him, but I don’t know how he’d fit next to Valanciunas since neither are a threat outside 10 ft

 Mozgov and the seemingly forgotten man on here, Anderson Varejao, will be able to cover the production of Thompson if he goes. He’s a nice young asset but not at max.

 The max for him is a waste, but, unless a really nice trade opens up, the Cavs should probably give it to him anyway.  They’re capped out for the forseeable future, which makes him better than what else they could do with that money (i.e. pocket it).

I just don’t see a team that wants a pure energy guy at the max. Maybe Indiana if Myles Turner shows his range?

 Didn’t the Cavs use up their designated player deal on Kyrie Irving so they would only be able to offer TT a 4 year deal which if we take the $16 million per year rumoured would be around $64 million over 4 years. If TT took a one year deal or any sort of deal with the Cavs then in theory he could sign a 5 year deal whenever that deal expired. 

But I agree that he’d be leaving a lot of money on the table regardless of the length of his new deal if he only took a 1 year qualifying deal.

My jaw dropped because I thought the earliest he could possibly go was like at best 6th to the Wizards but most people including myself had him going in the 8-14 range. I thoughthe was a reach especially with Jonas Valanciunas on the board still. I still think he was drafted a few spots too early but he’s turned into a valuable player. This has been really surprising to me. The money that they are offering him now, they are greatly overpaying him, and yet he wants more. I don’t get it. He’s a man on the boards, but he wouldn’t even start for half of the teams in the league. The funny part is, he doesn’t even start for them.

 Yeah TT has been a huge beneficiary of the Lebron Factor. Hes not a max. More like a 12m guy. 

Hard to box a dude out when his sole job is to get rebounds and you need to help on Lebron.

LeBron should have let Love walk and resigned Thompson, it’s obvious LeBron works much better with guys that play his way. He should have also traded Irving for more of a natural PG. It’s pretty clear that what they did in the Finals was better than the three of them. There is a reason Love and Irving have never won anything before LeBron.
