Lakers resign Pau Gasol to a 2 or 3 year deal and then trade him to the Knicks.

Knicks trade Amare Stoudemire to the Lakers.

Why the Lakers make this trade? The Lakers seem to be looking toward the summer of 2015 to sign a talent like Kevin Love, LaMarcus Alridge, Brook Lopez, or Rajon Rondo. That means that they will likely not invest on having too many multiple year contracts to mid-level exception players or higher salary players for that matter.  Kobe has made it known that he wants to win and while Stoudemire has an injury track record (understatement I know), he knows D’Antoni’s system, would be reunited with Steve Nash and potentially rejuvenate his career similar to what Antonio McDyess did in his early to middle thirties.  He is a competitor and would give the Lakers a veteran (something this team severely lacked this year) who knows how to be a professional and get to the playoff (his teams have only missed the playoffs 3 times in his 12 year career).  Also the Lakers do not lose Gasol for nothing and do not commit to taking salary beyond the 2014-2015 season.

Why the Knicks make this trade? With Phil Jackson looking to change the culture in New York (he has already fired the entire coaching staff), he will want to surround the Knicks with people (both players and coaches) who will understand his philosophy and triangle offense.  Pau knows the offense and would be a welcome addition to the Knicks, acting as a sort of player coach who will be able to teach Chandler, Melo (yes he is staying), and the other players about the triangle and help out the new coaching staff with its implementation.  Gasol would also be a better option for Melo than Amare as he is a willing passer and better rebounder, with a more durable history as well.

    What do you guys think?

I understand the need to move Pau Gasol (though I’d prefer to keep him and fire D’Antoni). But trading him for Amar’e Stoudemire seems ridiculous.  Why use $22 million of your cap space on a guy that MIGHT givs you half a season and won’t play any better than the guy you’re trading away?

Knicks cant recieve a player in a sign and trade as they are over the tax threshold.

No reason for Lakers to want Amare either, they might be interested in the last year of Tyson Chandler’s deal however.

What’s the incentive for this deal from the lakers pov?  They give the Knicks a productive big man and get nothing in return? If the lakers wanted to use their cap space to facilitate trades or key FA acquisitions  I’m sure they would ask for 1 or 2 first rounders, just like Utah got for helping the Warriors get iguodala and taking back Richard jefferson.

Either way like Nateogg said the Knicks can’t do a sign and trade since they are finished the season over the tax.

I like this idea. The Bulls and Rockets come to mind who are both expected to go after Melo.

Yeah this makes no sense.  Maybe attaching some future picks or something but what you proposed does nothing for the Lakers.  Not to mention it would put them as a possible tax team…. Why would they do that for Amare?
