publius2481ParticipantWith the trade deadline having passed I would like to hear people’s thoughts on which teams were the big winners and losers in their deadline deals (or lack of deals). My thoughts:
Winners:
1. Toronto Raptors- Serge Ibaka fixes the weakness they had at power forward and his style of play should fit in well with Toronto. Plus, TOR is unlikely to be able to sign major free agents due to cap constraints and this trade in essance gives them a chance to sign a major free agent. PJ Tucker was a smaller trade, but one I really like. He provides them a solid backup SF (their biggest weakness after the Ibaka trade). This trade makes them a scary team in the playoffs due to their depth. In both trades, TOR did not overpay (you can argue on both trades they got their new players cheap), so you have to love that they improved their odds now without sacrificing their best young assets.
2. New Orleans- TOR I think had the best short term payoff (since they have a chance to go deep in the playoffs), but long term NO had the best trade deadline. Talents like Cousins do not become available often and NO got him cheap, so great move. This will help NO convince Holliday to stay and should keep A. Davis happy, so things are looking up in NO. In the short term, this may help NO make the playoffs.
3. Dallas- Noel gives them a good young rim protector and they got him cheap.
Losers:
1. Sacramento: Giving away Cousins (hell, their GM admitted they had a better offer on the table) they are the big loser.
2. Indiana: Not being able to acquire help for PG might hurt their chances to resign him, so I have to call them a loser.
3. Chicago: I really do not understand their trade with OKC. McDermott has not been as good as they hoped, but he can shoot and is still young. I am not convinced the two young players they acquired will develop into much. Maybe Payne will prove to be a solid PG, but at this point I do not see it.

OhCanada-ParticipantThe Kings are big winners. Addition by subtraction here. Evans is playing tonight and they maybe making a playoff push which would be stupid but it kinda reminds me of when Toronto traded Rudy Gay, oddly enough to Sacramento. They could take the 8th seed.

SmooveKRYPTParticipantThey’re not taking the 8th seed. The subtraction will help in 1 aspect – they can play faster which will better utilize the rest of their personnel. But this team thoroughly lacks in the shot creating department.
They may have a hot week or 2 while teams don’t have much film on them playing this style, but once everyone catches on and adjusts they’ll fall right back down. They should just keep emphasizing player development and hope to hold onto their lotto pick.

OhCanada-ParticipantThey really shouldn’t be playing Evans right now. They need that Top 10 pick and even if they do catch a hot streak and make the playoffs sooner or later Tyreke is going to get injured that’s been proven time and time again. He’s a very good player but you can’t build around him.
As much as I believe that I would love to see him reemerge and stay healthy. He’s one of the funnest players to watch in the league.

2quick4uParticipanttoronto,okc and dallas have done really well and they’ve bought cheap, no doubt. nice little moves for washington and atlanta too.
in the other hand, phil jackson keeps soupy..he had a great chance for getting ricky rubio for free some days ago and didn’t execute..later minnesota got back his sanity and refused that trade with rose..NY could have had their PG for the next years for free.. too bad
also, chicago is an absolute mess.. this franchise has finally lost the north and is in the middle of nowhere..first, they signed a 35 year old wade for 23mill/year when he’s been missing an average of 20 games in the last 5 years, then they sign rondo..and then carter williams..and then grant..and then they trade one of their only good assets (mcdermott+a 2nd round) for…another PG in payne..
I think they should trade butler now that he’s on his highest value and with a good contract, and get as much assets as they can, if not, in 2 years they’ll be in the same situation than sacramento or even indiana with PG now, and they risk to get only half of what they could..
and finally about the NO-Sacramento trade, i think NO has done the right thing getting cousins at a relatively low risk, but even though i think the price and the risk is worth it, i also believe that this experiment it’s not gonna work an demarcus will leave once his contract is over, so NO may end up without cousins, their draft pick and hield..
and about sacramento.. i think it’s absolutely clear they could have got a lot more for cousins, specially if they had traded him this summer but still…i think they are the big winners of the trade deadline as they’ve finally gotten rid of cousins and now they can finally see light and start the re-building process without the shade of demarcus..
i know i’ve been the hardest with cousins on this site, but i trully believe this is the best that could happen for sacramento..even at that price
