What a trade deadline! Irving to Dallas, Durant to Phoenix/Bridges to Brooklyn (which is going to age very well), Westbrook finally dealt and a sneaky one Jakob Poeltl back in Toronto!

Poeltl to Toronto is fantastic. More to come I expect Toronto to move either Trent or OG today…just not enough minutes for these dudes right now. The chemistry has been terrible because we don’t have any players that compete if they don’t get their touches. OG has gotten to the point where he needs a bigger role and hes clearly not motivated to be the defensive player he has been in his current role. Trent’s been all over the place this year. Nurse gives no continuity with the lineup. Poeltl is gonna help so much as a guy that will bring stability to the lineup, won’t demand touches and just play well off the ball on both ends.

Poeltl is a good pick up for Raptors and the Spurs look to stockpile picks for rebuild. Ainge has added two more first rounders this week for the Jazz and more could be on the way with only 3 guys on their roster off limits.

2nd round picks need to be read as cash considerations. No team is collecting them to use them all. They will sell off the majority of them on draft night for “cash considerations.” By league rules, teams can only send out so much cash in trades in a given year. The 2nd rounders are basically a savings bond.

Teams are willing to trade 2nd round picks much more and can always buy them on draft night plus teams will often rather have an early 2nd rounder rather than late first rounder as contracts aren’t guaranteed and it can give a contending team more options.

A lot of this year’s picks have already been moved and teams who might bein the lottery won’t risk missing out on Wemby/Scoot sweepstakes. GSW have tried to cut their massive luxury tax bill too, I wonder how much they regret not taking LaMelo Ball now could almost be a Darko over Melo, Bosh, D-Wade type moment but GSW have their legacy already.

After the huge KD trade the only other team who could have made a splash with a big trade might have been the Knicks if they had used some more of their arsenal of picks but no deal was mentioned. With Dame putting up some great performances for Blazers I did wonder if he might have gone in a mega deal as his value is probably as high as it is ever going to be again and it could have netted them a nice haul and improved their chances of a shot at Wemby.

There will be a under the radar deal that really improves a team, I just cannot quite decide which one yet.

Really like what Lakers did. They got younger and have great flexibility for this summer to act as a team with cap space or over the cap (which is more liklely as I assume they want to bring some of these young guys back unless they totally flop rest of year and go for the 3rd star route.)

I really like what they did too. That last trade for Mo Bamba is a good fit as well. The Lakers did moves I wish they did in the beginning of the season. They’d be more relevant this year if they constructed a better team around their stars before the season. But I’ll take a team like it’s constructed now. It’s playing with time around their aging stars, but weeding out who pans out or not for next year and having some cap space will certainly help their title hopes next year.

I HATE what the Nuggets did. Hyland for 2 second rounders? Their biggest weakness is bench scoring, so they trade away their only shot creator off the bench for a bunch of nothing.
Typical conservative Denver move. Gave up the same way on Beasley, Vanderbilt, Bol Bol. Surely, as a first seed in the west they should be looking to improve the roster right now! I was so hoping they’d trade Hyland, filler, and a first-round pick to Brooklyn for one of their forwards and a guy like Seth Curry.
They might not get a chance at a title like this year again. Big pity.

They felt Hyland had gave up on the team and his attitude and lack of defensive effort had rubbed veterans in the locker room and coaches the wrong way.

Mo Bamba as an under 25 rebounding big man is a good pick up by the Lakers so could be a sleeper deal.

Also where Wall and Westbrook rock up may be worth keeping an eye on.

So I heard via Givony that the Nets were offered 4 first round picks for Mikal Bridges once they got him. And one of the 4 picks was protected. Bridges is an up and coming player who can also help a team immediately. But damn – 4 picks…! Nets should have punted on Bridges and taken the 4 firsts imo. I’d imagine that team was either the Warriors or Grizzlies. I know they were both heavily pursuing Bridges and OG Anunoby. Both teams wanted too much. But can you imagine if the Nets got that draft capital?

Nuggets were a huge disappointment this trade deadline. Thomas Bryant’s alright at best. Bones might be toxic for the Nuggets locker room atm, but they could have done a better trade for a better player instead of two 2nd rounders. Reggie Jackson to Denver isn’t improving Denver from the Bones impact.

Suns everyone screams winners of the trade deadline. Nets clearly are. Suns I’m on the fence leaning towards not that good of a trade. Suns have to rely on KD and CP3 to both simultaneously stay healthy and putting their egos aside for the most important player on the team in Devin Booker. It’s win or bust on the fly with no chemistry. Maybe they can pull it off, maybe not. I doubt they do. Just sayin’.

John Wall’s unfortunate career injuries make him more remembered for that rather than his solid play at his peak. I think he might be done too.

Russell Westbrook on the Clippers can be a good pick up. Not great but it’s a better fit than the Lakers. I think he should choose the Bulls, as he would fit with Donovan there, but doubt that’s happening now.

James Wiseman gets a 2nd chance. Although it’s in another log jam, I think he fits better with this younger Detroit core, and I think Wiseman’s got something to prove. Him and Duren will make a great future tandem, especially defensively.

Wiseman and Bagley at Detroit – two second picks who didn’t workout but at least Detroit didn’t draft them. But we may not be laughing if the Pistons get Wemby or Scoot and with Cade Cunningham back next year along with Ivey, Duren, Hayes and co suddenly becomes an impressive core.

Westbrook would be an upgrade on what Wall gave the Clippers, I did wonder whether GSW or Phoenix with Durrant might look at Russ and he wouldn’t need to relocate thousands of miles.

If the Nets were offered four first rounders for Brfidges and they didn’t take it then it seems stupid considering the guy isn’t even an All Star. As a Phoenix fan I know Bridges was good but at 26 going on 27 is he going to improve from his current 3rd best player on team/top complimentary starter level. If the Nets hads taken that deal they would have had a nice arsenal of picks to rebuild with or be in mix for future trades.
