AdamJCallejaParticipantDuring his high school years and especially during the all star games, amongst big men I remember all the talk was about Okafor, Cliff Alexander and Turner. Towns was ranked behind all these guys and it wasn’t until after the NCAA tourney did people start to realize that this guy is the undisputable top player in the draft. Now this guy is head and shoulders above the rest of his draft class and is on his way to being the best center in the league. Just thought it was funny that Cliff Alexander was getting so much more attention as a senior in high school, no that any of that matters now.

IlladelphParticipantI think that Towns was overlooked somewhat in high school for two reasons. Forst, he committed very early to Calipari, and was basically under the radar after that. The trend has been for some of the top guys to drag out there decisions until spring creating a big circus. I want to say that Towns committed early in his junior year. The second reason is that he was not a regular on the AAU all-star circuit, and played sparingly in all-star tournaments. I remember Stanley Johnson criticizing him for that and saying that he is missing out by not playing against elite high school talent.
Looking back at the top big men though, and I have to say that Towns is turning out to be the biggest star. I would have thought that Okafor would be on par with Towns from a star-in-the-making standpoint, but all the fighting and off the court troubles have sidelined him a bit from that all-American media friendly quality that Towns just seems to ooze.
Myles Turner is doing just fine, and is developing as expected. I wish the best for Alexander. I think that he did not have the best family support compared to guys like Towns and Okafor, and I don’t think he was as mentally prepared for the work and effort needed at the college level.

TravelinTravParticipantI love Towns, I think he will be a top 3 center next year. No real weakness in his game and working with KG will help his career. The rest of the class is great for bigs, I don’t remember another draft class that had so many bigs with the talent as this years. Okefar is going to be great, Miles Turner has looked really good as of late, I’m scared of KP’s potential and Towns is better than all of them( at least for now) 4 legit bigs in the same draft.
How do you think these guys compare to the bigs of the 90’S? Ewing, Robinson, Hakeem the dream, Shaq, Zo?

The GoatParticipantthose 90s players were of a totally different class. the rooks have talent, but theres a lot that goes into a long pro career, let alone a HOF one. even centers from that era that were a class below had careers i think a rook would be happy to end up with – smits, daugherty, divac, seikaly, mutombo – seriously underappreciated. KAT, KP, Jah and Turner have talent, but lets see what they do with it

Stop_basketball_nonsenseParticipantPlease. All those guys named from the 90s-late 80s averaged 20pts+ & 10+rebs per game except Ewing who still got 9 a game. Zo would have had an enormously better career if not for injuries, some of these guys might not reach these guys rookie numbers, so I will tell you how they compare. No MATCH. Towns might be able to reach these guys rookie numbers except for Shaw’s 14rebs a game, but seriously comparing guys in today’s game to hofs from decades ago is so laughable, back the hype guys came in to the league for the most part putting up all star numbers not like todays game. The superstars also played defense, but hey people been saying ignorant stuff since the beginning of time, it’s not gonna change now. Guess that’s the fun about being a human.

trappedintheclosetBefore the draft I said Porzingis had Hakeem/KG potential, and Myles Turner had Pat Ewing potential.
I was laughed at, but who’s laughing now?

32tn32ParticipantI’m sure being able to play against the USA team at the age of 16 gave him enough attention. He must of wanted to stay low keyed until it really mattered

Tap892ParticipantI mean he won player of the year as a senior, so it’s not like he wasn’t getting any attention, but I will say most people didn’t expect him to be this much better than guys like okafor and Alexander

Butter13ParticipantHow is Towns that much better than Okafor? 17.2 and 7.2 on 49% shooting vs. 16.5 and 9.5 on 52% shooting.
The only area where Towns is better is defensively.

trappedintheclosetDefense is half the game, which is why Okafor is nearly half the player of Towns.
And Porzingis is even better defensively than Towns, which means the two are neck and neck for ROY.
It’s also why Towns and Porzingis are on track to be perennial all stars, and Okafor is on track to be Brook Lopez.
