Gonzaga, Nova and Kansas seem to be consensus #1 seeds right now. After the UNC loss in the ACC semis I assumed they would be out of the running for a one seed unless Cal was able to win the PAC 12. Apparently not. Just checked ESPN and they still have UNC as a top seed. And this is even better, I also checked CBS and FOX and they both have freaking Duke as the last one!

Top to bottom ACC is obviously better than the PAC 12 but UNC, regular season ACC champs, has three more losses than Zona and lost in the conference semis and lost 3 of their last 4. 4 loss Arizona, co regular season and conference tourney champs, are 24-2 since losing early to Gonzaga, both losses to top 8 teams. They’ve probably been the most impressive team since Trier came back as well. We’ll see how much value is placed on playing a tougher overall schedule over less losses and a strong finish and tournament championship.

Or the other option apparently is Duke, the #5 team in the ACC has 8 losses which would be the most in history for a one seed. They lost three of their last 5 conf games then went on an impressive run in the conference tourney. Impresive but no more than Arizonas run however.

Given all that I seriously can’t make any case for Duke to get a 1. UNC maybe but it’s still really hard. I forsee a lot of bitching and East Coast bias talk if it happens.

i think zona should get it. Regardless of how much better the acc is top to bottom then then the pac 12, nobody should question the top 3 from the pac 12, those teams are legit and zona winning the conference tourney should put them ahead of UNC or duke. Zona went 30-4 losing to zaga, butler, ucla and oregon. They just avenged the oregon loss and beat ucla 2-1 in the season series. The widlcats were missing alonzo trier in both the ooc losses to zaga and butler and trier is probably the second most valuable player after markaneen, possibly even more valuable when you factor in lauri’s inconsistency.

As for unc, they lost 7 times, only have 1 ooc win vs a current top 25 team(wisconsin) and have 2 losses on the year to teams that wont make the tourney(indiana and gTech). I saw on espn yesterday where they asked lunardi about zona getting a 1 seed over unc and his response was just ” i have felt all along that the acc outright winner would get a 1 seed”, no further info just acc gets a 1 seed and thats that.

With all that being said, zona didnt exactly rack up lots of high quality wins. Michigan st is there only notable ooc win so i dont think it would be crazy east coast bias to not give zona a 1 seed.

If a team can steal an at large bid from a deserving team then a good team winning their conference tournament should have close to equal value. Arizona should get a 1 seed over UNC. Using this logic I have the ones being Villanova, Gonzaga, Arizona, Kentucky (if they hold on today) in that order. Then I have the 2’s Duke, UCLA, UNC, Kansas. Oregon dropping to a 3 because of the injury to Bouchard. They just arnt the same team without him.

Basically all I’m trying to say here if a deserving team can be out of the tournament because a undeserving team wins its conference tournament…then a potential one seed should get punished for not winning their conference tournament and potential 2-3 seed should get rewarded for winning it.

Pac 12 Champs U of A should be the last 1 seed. UCLA and Oregon are as good as anybody in the ACC. They don’t have the bad losses like Duke does to NC State and what not.
