Which one will be remembered as the best of the bunch?
Which point guard would you want during his prime on your team?
Who is the biggest disappointment?
The list (feel free to add whoever else I failed to mention):
Gilbert Arenas
Positives: Elite scorer, top 3 pg in league for a few seasons
Negatives: Injuries/Suspensions/Jail time?Steve Francis
Positives: One of the most athletic point guards ever, top 3 pg in league for a few seasons
Negatives: Many mid career (during his prime) and late career Injuries/IllnessesStephon Marbury
Positives: Amazing numbers 20 and 8 for many consecutive seasons.
Negatives: Every team that traded him away got immediately better/ Attitude/ Suspended and Benched/ Never won muchBaron Davis: potentially one of the most athletic and complete point guards ever, top 3 in the league for a few seaons, can be the best player on the court on any given night
Negatives: Can be seen mailing it in on any given night/ Many injuries/ InconsistentDis-Honorable mentions: Jason Williams and Mike Bibby for unrealized potential.

sheltwon3ParticipantHow good were these players supposed to be. I mean it is rare for someone to reach so vast potential they supposely had. At least they were half way decent. I was looking to see draft picks at point guard that never materializes but had a lot potential.

gcb3Participant@Shelton: They all def had hype after playing really well their first few seasons. Its not necessarily their fault but i do think people expected them to be better and atleast winning more. They are after all blessed with more athleticism than guards that are arguably more effective.
@R Dot: i meant the older Jason Williams on the magic now. It wouldn’t be fair to judge Jay Williams, i mean he crashed a motorcycle in his second season.. theres not enough to go on… Anyway Jason Williams and Bibby are only on there because they came in the league playing amazingly well and have fallen short of what their first three seasons indicated–but they have played fairly consistent regardless so i wouldn’t necessarily call them disappointments.

llperezof those 4 guys, i would say arenas was the least of a dissapointment. He was a second round pick who emerged as a all-star player and it was really the injuries that took him down. Now his current actions make it possible he could still come back next year at 100%
between baron, steve and marbury, I tink Baron had the most potential. He could have been the best pg in the league in my opinion. He had everything, the athleiticsm, he was a good shooter, penetrator. He just fell in love with jumpers and didn’t always stay in shape.
Marbury can still ball in my opinion. He just was a head case and teams got tired of him. I truly think marbury never really lost his skill so much as coaches just got done with him.
Francis is crazy because he was once considered an mvp candidate and people were comparing him to iverson. He just dissapeared over night it seems. They dealt him to orlando and that was like the end of stevie franchise.

llperezgcb3, i would not even put the old JWill as a candidate. He was not playing great at any point of his career, he was just very exciting. It was clear from day one that he would never be a consistent shooter or defender His assist number were never even very good. Always a suspect decision maker until he went to miami. I think considering the number of years he started and winning a title and still playing well at this stage, he has gotten every ounce of his potential out of himself.

gcb3ParticipantI agree 100% with what you said about all of them. Baron and Steve are toss ups. And Marbury was great and very skilled but I dont know if he ever really “got” it–he was too selfish maybe?
And yea Gilbert is still better than what people initially expected but his career seems so incomplete because of his injury and this gun nonsense.
Baron’s my vote. He has great vision, athleticism, instincts, size, defense, leadership yet he has never really all got it done.

gcb3ParticipantI think Jason just really impressed me his first two seasons. And so I was really let down as what he became as a player. But yea he hasn’t been exceptionally good nor exceptionally bad, he has been consistently mediocre.

GreenLanternParticipantPeople forget just how good everyone thought Marbury was going to be after his rookie year. The only other player on the list that compares hype wise is Francis.

Id say either Marbury or Francis had the most potential, Davis had the look of a really good player while I seen Marbury and Francis as soon to be franchise players…..It’s sad that soo many players like this waste their gifts and don’t realize their potential…
