I have been watching NBADraft.net since its birth and I have been fond of their style of comparing certain prospects to different NBA Players… The thing with comparisons here is that it is a “hit and miss” type just like Ben Gordon. I would like to review some of these comparisons and where they are at at this time of their careers… I know there are so many of them but I would choose only my top 10. So without further delay, here are my top 10 RIDICULOUS and DUBIOUS NBA Comparisons that the NBADraft.net has ever made from 2000-2008:

10. Maciej Lampe – NBA Comparison: Dirk Nowitzki
Lampe was supposed to be the next Dirk, so to speak. But as it turned out, he never lived up to such expectations. He quickly exited the NBA without anyone noticing.

9. Nene – NBA Comparison: Hakeem Olajuwon
Though he will never be Olajuwon, Nene will be remembered as the one who came back from consecutive injuries and helped the Nuggets in their playoff run. It’s a shame that Hakeem is the player they compared him to when we all knew that it’s waaaaay ridiculous.

8. DeSagana Diop – NBA Comparison: Bob Lanier
Bob Lanier was a legend during his time in the 70’s whereas Diop never made it far than a man coming off the bench to provide size and defense but no offense. No offense, Diop.

7. Dwight Howard – NBA Comparison: Kwame Brown
Yes guys… To those of you who don’t know this, Dwight used to be compared to Kwame Brown… That is why when Orlando chose him as the 1st pick overall, some booed the pick because he could have been a bust waiting to happen like Kwame. But the difference was, Dwight has the heart and passion of a warrior that is obviously absent in Kwame. In the end, people now praised the Magic for taking such huge risk into drafting an untapped potential rather than taking a surefire solid forward in Emeka Okafor… Superman didn’t disappoint at all unlike his NBA Comparison.

6. Adam Morrison and Mike Dunleavy Jr. – NBA Comparison: Larry Bird
Just because they shoot a lot doesn’t mean that they have to be compared to Larry Legend. What made Larry Bird is his tenacity on defense and his overall team play. Morrison and Dunleavy are none of that I’m afraid.

5. Mike Sweetney – NBA Comparison: Elton Brand
What? EB is the comparison given by NBADraft.net to this heavyweight cheese-burger lovin’ psycho??? Robert Traylor would have been the PERFECT guy to be compared to Sweetney.

4. Pau Gasol – NBA Comparison: Toni Kukoc
Toni Kukoc? Pau Gasol? what? As much as I love the two of them, their games are way different. Pau is an inside threat while Toni Kukoc is a 3-point shooter who is deadly enough to let MJ and Pip take a rest. By the way Pau, I am glad you finally have a ring. You deserve it.

3. Deron Williams – NBA Comparison: Andre Miller
Andre Miller is all about fundamentals. Simple and precise is his game something that can be said to Deron but not quite. Deron is faster and more agile than Miller. He is alsoa bit flashy something Andre Miller never was and never will be.

2. Kwame Brown – NBA Comparison: Kevin Garnett
Do I have to elaborate on this comparison they made? I mean, it’s Kwame Brown.

1. DeShawn Stevenson – NBA Comparison: Michael Jordan
This one tops it all because it is way too obvious that Michael Jordan’s talent is far better than Stevenson’s. I hope there is a law regarding anyone who is comparing a prospect to the game’s greatest player as a complete blasphemy…

Note: there are so many hits and so many misses in comparisons but these are my top 10, anyone care to comment at all, I am open for it..

Let me first say that I love this site, aside from this simple aspect of it. Their player comparisons are horrendous compared to draft express. With that being said here’s my opinions.

Everybody forgot how good Felipe Lopez and Deshawn Stevenson were coming out of High School. Stevenson got a bad beat on a bad system for 2 guards. He’s by no means Michael Jordan, but to me the Kwame Garnett comparison, especially how it panned out was far worse.

The Miller Williams comparison isn’t all that bad in my mind. Sure Deron Williams is more dynamic of a player on both ends of the court, but both are pass first point guards.

Now I have to defend Nene here as I’m probably the only member on this website who owns his jersey. If not for a loaded front court and nagging injuries this guy could be a top 5 power forward in this league. You can laugh, but since recovering he’s been a double double machine with averages of 17,10 i think while leading the league in fg% at one point last season. I’ve owned this guy for about 4-5 years and he finally blows up in my face. It’s good to see that I wasn’t wrong about him.

I agree that the comparisons on this site tend to be horrible, but then again, it’s projecting a guys career pretty far out. I think there is always going to be a great chance of missing on a guy when you compare him to a legend. Guys like Jordan, Bird, Magic, etc are once in a lifetime players and tend to be very unique. I think a lot of guys get compared to Jordan and Bird specifically because a lot of these players have watched those guys and have grown up trying to imitate them. Kobe probably wouldn’t admit it, but he was definitely a Jordan admirer. I remember when he used to go as far as doing the whole sticking out the tongue on dunks.

Anyways, I don’t think the Andre Miller/ Deron Williams comparison is that bad. They are not the same player, but they have similar builds, are always looking to get teammates involved and both like to attack the basket. When Gasol came from Europe he was actually a 7 ft small forward, but he got put at power forward because of his size once he got to the NBA. Ever wonder why his passing is so good? Plus sometimes when he handles the ball you notice that he does it pretty well for a big guy. I remember watching him cross Howard over in one of the finals games. Of course, they made him put on weight and I think that he was coached to stay more around the basket. He was never the shooter that Kukoc was, but I think it would have kept evolving if he was able to stay at the same position and do more work with his ball handling and shooting.

All those are pretty bad except the Miller, Williams one. I actually don’t see that being in the top 10 worst at all. A young Miller was a promising player and was really good. They also play similar styles of the game.

I’ve followed this site for a long time too, i took a 5 or so year break from posting, but i remember when Diop was coming out of high school back in the day when that was all the hype, there was a group of guys who always got on my case for saying Diop was going to be a bust. Most ridiculous comparison of all time has to be Harold Miner. Remember him? At USC, he was billed “Baby Jordan”. Played more like “Peewee” Hermann!

The Oden to Bill Russell comparison is drastic, but at the time, Oden was biled as the center of this generation. Yes, Russell is extreme, but Patrick Ewing would have been very fair.

Good work Marcusfizer. I’m starting to like you. Finally, something worth posting.

1. Wasn’t former UCLA product Jaron Rush compared to Scottie Pippen? This may could have happened had Rush laid off the beers at UCLA.

2. I did notice Majce Lampe went AWOL from the NBA. I even looked up him up a few weeks ago.

3. Thanks for the Adam Morrison/Larry Bird comparison. I knew this was crazy. Blame this one on ESPN. They even compared they’re mustaches.

4. Mike Sweetney had could have be good, but the Knicks never gave him the chance. He produced when he was given the minutes, but for some reason, he feel out of their rotation.

5. Nene could have been really good. He tore his ACL and missed 1 1/2 yrs. When he healed, the body turned on him and he had cancer at age 24. What the heck. Had he been on any other team right now, he would be 20 and 10. He put up numbers with Melo and Iverson taking all of the shots. He even led the league in FG percentage.

6. Note: If I remember correctly, Gasol was compared to Dirk. Am I wrong on that?

great idea for a post, and i agree with a lot of your choices, but some i don’t .

Deron Williams and Andre Miller might be the closest of the ones you posted. Both have been all-star caliber pass first, team leaders. I’m not positive Andre Miller ever made an All-Star team, but that guy might have one of the most underrated careers of current NBA players. I hope he takes this Portland team to the next level.

Also i think coming out of G-town, Elton Brand was the perfect comparison for sweetney. Both undersized PFs who had soft touches, and decent low post moves. Sweetney went to the wrong franchise, a Knicks team who was imploding and fell head over heels for the buffet line.

EVERYBODY was comparing Greg Oden to Greg Russell, on T.V. radio, the net you name it.

I’ll also defend these comparisons in general by saying it makes the site more fun, and generates more buzz for itself by making outlandish comparisons. Do you think Aran really thought DeShawn Stevenson was going to be the next Michael Jordan?….or that his skill set was similar and it would create some buzz for a High School Kid, and get people to come on here and talk about him?

Makes things more interesting comparing a high scoring 2-guard coming out of High School to Mike Jordan every once in a while, rather than DaJuan Wagner everytime.

Narc: You’re right my man… Fizer was compared to Charles Barkley and I see some similarities a little bit in their games. The only thing that’s wrong was, Fizer never turned out to be the player that I think he could have been while Sir Charles is one of the 50 Greatest Players ever.

Fizer was unstoppable in college, being a Kansas fan i saw him play a lot, and his baseline fadeaway to beat the Jahawks in i don’t even remember what year was sick, unfortunately im a Bulls fan too so i was disappointed when he didn’t pan out, and became a bit spiteful, BUT he was a really solid player, just didn’t pan out
