With a quarter of the season gone for the Detroit Pistons, Andre Drummond has increased his FT shooting percentage from an abysmal 36% to a still pretty ordinary 47%! Not saying he can rest on his laurels yet, but is 47% enough for opposing coaches to stop using the hack-a strategy with him? If not, what percentage do you think he needs to get to for that to happen? It’s a pretty good advert for the virtual reality technology that he’s been using to make these improvements.

I’d say at the very least above 50%. But, coaches will likely stop playing hack-a-drummond once he’s able to hit 60.

He’s going to have to get to about 62%-66% for them to stop.

NBA teams "points per shot" is between 1.1 and 1.3. Without getting to deep into the numbers I think that unless someone is shooting into the mid 60s there are times where it is ideal to hack them.

Where did you find that? League average for eFG% is .504 right now (would be 1.008 "point per shot") and it’s over common averages of the last decade that tends to be between .495 and .500 . That’s roughly 1 point per shot and even if the league leapfrogs this with 3PT shooting it’s probably only going to approach  1.05 or something like that. Any team analyst would not advise you to hack-a-someone that is clearly above 50%. The bar is probably between 50 and 55% and changes with coaches and own statistics about their shooting.

Elfrid Payton was shooting .589 last year, was he intentionally fouled? Same with Rajon Rondo who also was below .600…

I don’t know if it’s been a situational thing, but I can’t remember any blatant hacking Drummond has received over these 21 games. That’s why I was asking the question – have they stopped, or just saving it for more meaningful games? I’m hopeful that this recent uptick is the first signs that he’s turned the corner on this thing.

They actually signed Boban with the intent of playing him down the stretch to prevent hack-a-drummond.

I’ve hardly watched any pistons games yet this season but I know boban hasn’t had very many minutes.

On a strong note, pistons have won 5 of their past 6 games, KCP has been playing really well and shooting good %. Just hope he can keep it up !!

Teams will always look to hack him if he is shooting under 50% I’d say. But a lot will depend on the state of the game, how many fouls the defender is on for teams won’t want to sacrifice good players fouling out and have to put a lesser guy on Drummond.

Good point as always by R377 about KCP having good shooting percentages so far this season and continuing to progress well. This could be a big year for KCP, he is in the last year of his rookie deal and needs to make a strong case to get the sort of good 2nd contract he must hope for. He will be 24 in a couple of months so this next contract could take him through his prime years.

Also Pistons are doing very well to stay above .500 with Reggie Jackson being out. Reggie should return tonight so when he hits his stride the Pistons should have a good chance of securing a play off birth this season.
