trelos6ParticipantYes, this is a post about Al Horford.
Dude is a stud. We know exactly the kind of player we are getting.
As a featured role player he was scoring 15ppg, but as a #1 option (assuming we don’t land KD), I think he can get up to around 19ppg.
He averages around 9rpg per his career, but again, with the C’s lack of rebounding prowess, he should get up to 10rpg.
Finally, he can pass a bit, block and steal it a bit, and looks after the ball.
His shooting is very good for a big man, and we should expect around 35% from 3.
Horford has NEVER shot below .500 from the field in his career.
He also hits 75% of his free throws, so we don’t have to worry about any hack-a- strategies.
I think Horford is a great #2 option on a championship team, and can help lead the Celtics to a #3 seed in the East next season. If we can then add KD, or another star in 2017-18, watch out Cavs.

CavFanPRParticipantI agree. I think they’re a lock for the #2 seed even without Durant. Could be the only team that can challenge Cleveland in that conference.

ChoppyParticipantI hope they truly are power rankings based on off season moves rather than a list of the teams you expect to see in the playoffs. Where’s Detroit? I think they’ve improved themselves at least as much as the Hawks and they’re coming of a playoff berth. I know you don’t like them and never give them the respect they deserve, but come on – they will make the playoffs again next year.

Hype MachineLol I dont dislike Detroit at all…’Hardcore Pawn’ is one of my favourite tv shows.
But to add a team in you gotta kick someone out.
The Bulls and Hornets arent bad teams either.
Its tough…Im showing faith in the Knicks, which has potential for embarassment if they implode.
The Bucks have done better this offseason than the Pistons for me so they get the 8th seed.

ChoppyParticipantI like the moves the other teams have made too. I just think you (and apparently quite a few others on this forum) don’t believe that the young players on Detroit’s roster will improve. If they show even minimal growth then they will be in the playoffs. Make sure you bookmark this to come back to mate…

ChewyParticipantI like the Rondo signing. It’s a good risk on a talented but hotheaded player and its only 2 years, so if it fails we won’t be hurting too bad. But all of the Bulls moves (trading Rose, letting Noah and Pau walk, drafting Valentine and signing Rondo) all point to a solid but mediocre team. Detroit is better.
I also think the Pistons make the playoffs over the Bucks. It’s close, but I give the edge to Stanley Johnson, Drummond and Jackson.
Indiana is clearly the 2nd best team in the Central behind the Cavs with the moves they have made this offseason. After those two, the remaining three teams are all pretty close to each other,

SeattleSuperChronicsParticipantWith Thomas and Horford…I’m not that impressed. Yes they got better but they arnt beating the Cavs. I would even go as far to say that they arnt as good as some of the previous hawk teams Horford was on.

surveParticipant^ I totally agree. Reason to be excited yes, but dont go overboard. Wouldnt say they are a "lock" to be #2 in the east w/o Durant.

TheTruth86ParticipantCouldnt have said it better myself. I think we should be calling sacramento asap, offering a package for Cousins. He seems unhappy (rightfully) with the direction his team is going and should be thrilled to reunite with his lil buddy IT.

OhCanada-ParticipantTo be honest I’m not that impressed. Call me a Homer or whatever but there’s no way this makes them better than the Raptors. 3rd seed in the East isn’t a huge accomplishment and replacing Sully, Olynyk, Zeller combo with Horford helps them a bit with consistency but I doubt they win much more than 50. Playoffs will come and they will still lack rim protection. I’m gonna call it straight, get ready for a 1st or second round exit Celtics fans!
Future definitely is bright with all that international talent and Brooklyn picks but Horford hasn’t gotten past Cleveland and won’t get them past Toronto.

holefillers1ParticipantPacers have a great starting five. Also Miles and Jefferson off the bench. If these guys can gel by the playoffs they can run with Boston for sure.

ghettosermonParticipantI would temper expectations on Horford. He’s been a top 15 big man for the majority of his career to but to expect a team to lean on him to a championship is a little unrealistic at this point. The best he’s been able to run with a team is a sweep in the ECF on a squad that had 4 Allstars. Horford is a great complementary player and a 3rd/4th option on a championship team but he is most effective as a spot up mid range shooter when others are creating for him. He’s not the type of guy that you can throw the ball to in the post and expect him to generate offense. His post up game is predicated on bulling his way to the rim and often throwing up semi wild hook shots. He definitely is built for a floor spacing offense and is good in the pick and roll. There is a reason why he’s never been the featured big man on his own team. In the Josh Smith day’s the offense would go through Smith as the playmaker and when Millsap was brought in the offense ran through Paul. Personally for Al I would have liked him to find a way on the Thunder. If he were put in that Ibaka role where he could focus on rebounding and defending and hitting shots when open I think he’d truly thrive. Especially if KD doesn’t sign in Boston I think he may have problems living up to expectations where people are expect him and IT4 to lead them past the likes of Cleveland.
Not hating on the signing but I’d temper expectations here. In all honesty he’s made the Allstar teams on reputation the last 2 years. His numbers have dipped most significantly rebounding. He’s averaged 15.2 ppg/7.2 rpg the last 2 seasons which are good numbers but you have to consider this is on one of the highest scoring teams in the league. One thing the Celts must do is find a way to have him play PF. At PF he can take advantage of his strength and he has good enough foot speed to cover PF’s.
As a Hawks fan I said this before he decided to leave but I didn’t want him back. Not because he’s not a great player who plays with heart, but I’d much rather the combo of D12 & Millsap instead of D12 and Horford. Horford lacks the type of offensive versatility to be a go to guy.

ghettosermonParticipantHappy to see him get paid because he absolutely deserves it just always thought that if he were to leave the Hawks it would be for a significantly better situation. People seem to think that Boston is in a significntly better position that the Hawks but without being a homer and subjective when you stack the teams I don’t see the significant separation as both teams have great coaching. Will be interesting to see the final roster Boston puts together if they don’t land KD But currently this is how the rosters stack which obviously Boston is far from being a complete roster compared to Atlanta.
Celtics:
PG: Isaiah Thomas/Marcus Smart/Terry Rozier
SG: Avery Bradley/James Young/RJ Hunter
SF: Jae Crowder/Jaylen Brown
PF: Al Horford/Jonas Jerebko
C: Amir Johnson/Kelly OlynkHawks:
PG: Dennis Schroeder/Malcolm Delaney
SG: Kyle Korver/Tim Hardaway Jr./Deandre Bembry
SF: Kent Bazemore/Thabo Sefolosha/Taurean Prince
PF: Paul Millsap/Mike Muscala

circumlocution75ParticipantHorford is 30 years old ——- he’s averaged 15 pts & 7 rebounds the last 3 years……. Horford measured 6’9 3/4" inches at the NBA DRaft Combine IN SHOES
He measure Under 6’9” in bare feet ——- needless to say he is Not a shot blocker or even a Rim protector
Horford is Not strong on the Low Block —— Chriss Broussard just said the same thing on ESPN this morning & Laughed when asked if Horford is a "star"
Celtics need 3 point shooting & Rim Protection & someone w/ strong scoring ability IN the Paint…… Horford is Def an upgrade over Sullinger & Olynck but he gives the C’s none of those Needs
