WarblingSpamalopeParticipantI always think this is the interesting question for fans. Would you rather have your team be terrible or good enough to make the playoffs, but no threat to win? The griz core is diminishing fast. I would try to get premium value on gasol and some value on the rest. I know that core stayed loyal, so you should try to show them loyalty back in where you send them. Its just time to face the facts.

Arc12345ParticipantOur claim to fame is always being good enough to be in the playoffs. Never close to good enough to win (We really had no chance against Cleveland).
I’d love to see them blow it up or try to make a big move. Griz should probably blow up, Hawks make a move.

Taylor Gang MikeParticipantBlow up the grizz.. They have been Mediocore for years. The team is just bad "But they made the playoffs and I love Zach and Gasol, and Conley is one of the most underated point guards in the NBA" sooo what.. They need to blow it up because they are not going anywhere.

GlenTaylorSucksParticipantGasol and Conley are one of the best PnR combos in the league. Definitely keep them together, but everyone else is up for grabs. Carter, Barnes, Allen, and Randolph (who’s still effective as a bulldog in the post) are getting old and IIRC, a couple of them have expiring deals. Jeff Green is the definition of an average player, as is Courtney Lee. Seems like they have a glut of young SF/PFs. Brandan Wright is a good piece, but as part of a rotation/first big off the bench, or a starter on a team that doesn’t need an offensive big.
The question here is how to blow it up? I’m not sure they’d get much on the trade market for their aging vets; maybe second rounders or at most a late future first if they traded to a contender looking for one more piece to put them over the top. I think it’d be difficult to trade Green given his salary (though maybe with the raised cap it’s easier to swallow?), but I agree with Warbling- the team does need to make changes in the offseason. It’s better to be bad than mediocre.
Maybe clean house in the offseason, give Joerger an opportunity to see what he’s got with the young guys along w/Conley and Gasol, and go forward from there?

HitsterParticipantMike Conley is a free agent this summer so a lot will depend on what he does, if he moves on then there could be a case for blowing it up. Z-Bo would be going into the last year of his deal and a contender might consider a move for him.
Marc Gasol is regarded as one of the top C’s in the NBA but his trade value may never be higher, he turns 31 this week so if the Griz did decide to blow it up in the summer then they might field some very interesting offers.
Teams like Boston via Nets and Lakers could have very high picks and outside of Simmons and Ingram then a trade for a proven All Star like Gasol might be more appealing than drafting a young prospect. Gasol as he is under contract for another guaranteed 3 years after this summer would have a very high asking price but a package based around a top 5 draft pick would give the Grizz a good rebuilding point.

ExumInfernoParticipantThey are stuck, if they keep it together they won’t be a contender and trade value of Gasol and Randolph will go down. If they trade all the veterans, they might lose the fans and as a smaller market team they don’t want to turn into Vancouver and relocate.
Memphis have also traded a couple of future firsts too, so some assets are not around to build with now.
They are also not a free agent destination.

HitsterParticipantWith Pau Gasol having a player optiion this summer, I wonder if there is any chance he may consider linking up with Marc Gasol back in Memphis. The brothers have never played in the NBA on the same team and it might appeal to them to do it. Pau is a legend in Memphis, he has his titles, has earnt mega money so for his last few years in the NBA a homecoming might appeal to him.
A 3 man frontcourt of Pau, Marc and Z-Bo would be a decent roster IMO with Brandan Wright when sound to back them up.
A lot will depend on what Mike Conley does in FA and who’d be willing to pay him. Mike is a very good PG but he’s not top draw level IMO like the very best in the NBA but someone is likely to pay him well. Also when Memphis see how former PG Kyle Lowry has gone from being a back up to an All Star starter they would be aware that Conley could still improve.

TeslaBallerParticipantWhy lose Conley for nothing? I can’t imagine he stays, unless he just wants the money.
Someone said Randolph is a FA after next season? What kind of money are you willing to give Randolph 1 1/2 seasons from now? I’m guessing not much. If he’s willing to take a hometown discount that’s great but this will be his last payday so I don’t see that happening.
You keep Gasol but everyone else is up for grabs. The time is now.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 01/24/2016 - 4:41pm #1038660
publius2481ParticipantIf he stays, Gasol and him are still the building blocks of a good team for the next three years and blowing it up is a risky strategy. Keep in mind if there first round pick is out of the top five next year, it goes to Denver (provided the Griz make the playoffs this year). So in order to benefit from being bad, they need to be really bad. If Conley stays, they should try and acquire talent to put around themNow if Conley leaves, I doubt they are a playoff team. They then have an aging roster that cannot compete, so they should then trade Gasol and anyone else they can get something for.

D7H7NParticipantKeep Conley at all costs. If Durant is out of the question this offsesason, pursue Harrison Barnes and someone else who can stretch the floor. Gasol does not ever want to leave Memphis no matter how awful his team will be and the fans love him, the GM knows and respects that.

HitsterParticipantWith Conley it all depends what sort of money he would want, if he wants a max deal then do Memphis pay it him and use up a lot of their cap space or not?
Don’t forget that Memphis are a smaller market team and they have been in the play offs for the last 5 seasons and stand a good chance to make it again. Do they risk blowing it up for a possible better future or do they carry on as they are whilst not realistic challengers they can have winning seasons, make nice play off revenue and win a series or two along the way. This keeps the crowds interested and income coming in.

Memphis MadnessParticipantI would think about doing a sign and trade with Conley after the season. Looks like we will either lose in the first round or the second round which means that the gap between us and the Warriors, Spurs, Thunder, and Clippers is wide and getting wider.
Should we try to rebuild around Gasol and Conley? I think not. Only IF we can get an alpha scorer by trading all our junk. Marc and Mike are having down years anyway and are not getting younger. Conley looks like he is rapidly getting older, or he is breaking down.
If we trade Marc then we could lose some fans. Z Bo has a fan following too, as does Tony Allen. Z Bo and Tony are basically worth the money. Zach offers solid value even if he can’t dominate every night. He’s a war horse and a winner.
Some other good values on this team this year have been Matt Barnes and Mario Chalmers. They are saving our butts. But, Mario is a free agent. I think I would pay Mario instead of giving Conley a max deal.
Conley is expendable.
I would try to trade Conley for some solid players and future picks.
If the Knicks want him, then I want Jose Calderon (as a solid passing and solid shooting backup to Mario Chalmers), Aron Aflalo as an upgrade at the 2 over Courtney Lee, and two future first round picks. We basically need some picks. We will lose TWO first rounders in the next few years.
Jeff Green and Courtney Lee will also be free agents after this season (along with Conley and Chalmers) so this team might look really different after this season.
A great scenario for the Grizzlies would be a post-season trade of Conley, Jeff Green, and Courtney Lee to the Knicks for Carmelo Anthony. Then you resign Mario Chalmers.
Without really breaking up the core too much, you get your alpha scorer to go along with Big Marc and Zach.
Starting five: Mario Chalmers, Tony Allen, Carmelo Anthony, Zach Randolph, and Marc Gasol.
Bench: Matt Barnes, Jordan Adams, JaMychal Green, Jarrell Martin, and Brandan Wright.
Not a young team, and not much depth, BUT the top of the roster can do a lot of things. The first unit can matchup with a lot of teams.
They can even play some small ball with some Chalmers, Barnes, TA, Carmelo, and Brandan Wright lineups.
You then add our first round pick and some of our D League guys like Andrew Harrison, and this streamlined Grizzlies team has promise — if only for the next 2 or 3 years at most.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantOh the horror of being the 5-seed in the West.
A few things:
First, they owe a first round pick to Denver. It is oddly protected this season (top 5 and 15-30 protected) before only being top 5 protected in 2017.
Second, under any circumstance, you don’t move Marc because you can try to spend the next five years trying to find someone who can even approach his ability. Once again, Memphis will be sending a draft pick to Denver. You would much rather that 2017 pick be the 18th as opposed to 6th.
Third, a team can transition without blowing things up. Tony Allen is slowing and while Courtney Lee is not a bad player is not the long-term answer. Zach Randolph is slowing, but would still be useful in a 25-30 minutes role as opposed to 30-35. Jeff Green still does not seem to fit. Matt Barnes is at best a band aid for Green not fitting. Some of the roster needs to be turned over, but expiring contracts and the cap going up should allow for that to happen. They will be around $30 million under the projected cap, and the areas where they most need assistance are on the wings where there it is easier to fill in. They would need to thread a needle to re-open a title window, but it beats accelerating Denver’s rebuild.
